Article - Speech, Past Presidents' Lunch - Les Carlyon, 2007
A copy of an article from the Bulletin recounting the speech by Les Carlyon at the Past Presidents' lunch on 18th March 2007. He chose to talk about Sir John Gellibrand and his war service and personality. He quoted Charles Bean in 1944 "There was a time when some of us thought that the best monument to John Gellibrand might be the story of Second Bullecourt. Now I feel there will be an event better monument - the record of Legacy." Document was from a folder of documents donated to the archive by Legatee Bill Rogers that related to his time as President (March 2006 - March 2008).A record of John Gellibrand's war service in WW1.Three A4 page photocopy of an article published in the Bulletin 5 April 2007 of a speech by Les Carlyon at the Past Presidents' lunch on 18 March 2007.sir john gellibrand, charles bean -

Receipt (1912), HUGH V. McKAY - SUNSHINE HARVESTER, 6 March 1912
Interpreting from the details that can be read it is believed that on 6/3/1912 Mr. M. Norton paid by cheque the sum of 5 Pounds 19 Shillings and 5 Pence, of which 5 Pounds 3 Shillings and 11 Pence was for a Summons possibly issued on 23/2/1912, while 15 Shillings and 6 Pence was the charge for the costs of the Summons. This is not a document issued by a Court of Law so use of the word 'Summons' is confusing to us at this stage. Was it just standard practice to send out a bill and call it a Summons, or was Mr. Norton late in paying and so had to pay an extra charge after being 'summoned' a second time. Could this receipt be part of a 'promissory note' exchange, payment for which had to be summoned? Another thing that can't be explained at this stage is the use of the symbol % after the amount of money written in figures, just after the Pence amount. The symbol for Pence in those days, and until decimal currency, was d as can be seen from the Duty Stamp. In 1912 and before did % also stand for Pence when the money amount was written by hand, or could it have been a shorthand way of indicating something like 'portion of amount'? This receipt is very intriguing and so we will endeavour to try to fully understand the information it contains. If any person can provide information that may assist us, then please contact the Sunshine & District Historical Society. The receipt is significant to our Society because it was issued by Sunshine Harvester / Hugh V. McKay more than 100 years ago. It also appears to contain information that at this stage is not fully understood, such as the use of the % sign, and why the word summons is used. Of further interest, but perhaps not surprising for the times, is that only Mr. is printed on the receipt. It appears that they never expected to issue these type of receipts to females.Very light tan coloured paper receipt No.1773 issued on 6/3/1912 by Sunshine Harvester / Hugh V. McKay to Mr M. Norton. The receipt has fire damage on the left side and so some details are missing. Details are hand written in ink in the spaces provided. A greenish coloured one penny (1d) Victoria Stamp Duty stamp is affixed.6 3 1912 ......ved by Cheque from Mr. M Norton ......ne the sum of Five ...... nineteen Shillings and five Pence, with ......being £5.3.11% of Enclosed Summons 23. 2.12 & 15/6 % Costs of Same.receipt no. 1773, sunshine harvester, hugh v. mckay, mr m. norton, 1912, victoria stamp duty, 1d -

These quilts were made from 10 inch squares and sewn together. Each square had the name of the donor embroidered on it, the quilts were made by Red Cross members. The Shire Emblem was also added. One of these quilts was found after the 1939/45 war in Egypt and sent to the Museum in Rutherglen Scotland. The Council of Rutherglen Scotland was later amalgamated into South Lanarkshire, and the holdings of the Rutherglen Museum sent to the South Lanarkshire Museum. Martha Valentine communicated with the South Lanarkshire Museum, to enquire if they still held this item. Sharon Paton, of the South Lanarkshire museum replied with the comments: "Yes I can confirm the quilt (RG.1992.7) is part of the Rutherglen collections transferred to us by Glasgow City Council in 1995/6 during council re-organisation. We are very pleased you have given some more information on the history of the quilt since many of the items transferred to us at that time, did not arrive with a lot of historical information. I attach photographs of the quilt taken yesterday. Due to space restrictions in that store, I couldn’t unroll it fully, but hopefully before the end of this year we can do that when we are working in our storage sites. It was very easy to locate. It was last displayed around 2003/4 for our Treasures of South Lanarkshire exhibition at Low Parks Museum." We were pleased to see that it had a good home. Colour photograph of a handmade quilt. Decorative object - Sarah Coventry jewellery pin for 10 years service, c. 1970s - 1980s
Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. was a North American jewellery company that was established in 1949 by the Stuart family as part of Emmons Jewelry, Inc. It began operations in England and Australia in 1968, and in Australia it moved from Carlton in Melbourne to Wodonga in 1969. The premises were originally on High St. in Wodonga, but a new warehouse was built in Melbourne Rd. later in 1969. It was a direct selling jewellery business using a party-plan model similar to Tupperware and Avon. The sales reps or 'Hostesses' were provided with jewellery samples in demonstration kits, which they displayed at jewellery parties in their homes. The designs for jewellery such as brooches, necklaces, earrings, chokers and bracelets were purchased from freelance designers and jewellery manufacturers rather than in-house designers. In 1979 Sarah Coventry Pty. Ltd. in Wodonga was bought by three Australian businessmen, including Wodonga local Jim Sawyer, and continued to sell jewellery under the name "Sargem Pty. Ltd”, for several more years in the 1980s. As part of the Sarah Coventry collection, the pin has local significance with the decentralised commercial development of regional centres such as Wodonga in NE Victoria, as well as national and international significance from the perspective of social and economic developments for women after World War II. The direct selling party-plan business model Sarah Coventry was based on is also considered the first of its kind for jewellery.Small rectangular gold metal pin with a faceted pink stone inlay on the proper left side and a faceted clear stone on the proper right side. Two raised flower motifs on the proper right side. The 10k stamped on the back surface suggests it is made of 10 karat gold. The abraded areas on the clasp on the back expose underlying silver coloured metal indicating that the clasp is plated."Sarah / SC / 10 YRS / Coventry" raised inscription on the front surface. "® cTo / 10 K" stamped on the lower proper left side of the back surface, indicating 10 karat gold. The ® symbol indicates that the manufacturer's mark is federally registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office. The 'cTo' is the trademark by O. C. Document, ANZAC day commemoration services 2015, 2009,2012, 2013
These are programs for the commemoration ceremonies held in Warrnambool in recent years. Anzac Day, 25th April, has been a public holiday in Australia since 1927 and at first commemorated the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops who landed on the Gallipoli peninsula, in Turkish Thrace, the European section of Turkey, on 25th April 1915 and engaged in battle with the troops from the Ottoman Empire in World War One. Today Anzac Day commemorates all Australian and allied troops who fought for their country in world conflicts. The programs reflect the deep reverence Australians have for both Anzac Day and those who fought for us. These programs are of some interest as they represent the type of commemoration that takes place in Warrnambool each year on Anzac Day. The local people, like most others in Australia, hold Anzac Day as an important, if not the most important, national day. These three programs are for commemoration ceremonies in Warrnambool for Anzac Day, 2009, 2012 and 2013. Two of them are two A4 white sheets of paper folded in two to make 4 pages printed back to back and the other is a larger folded cream-coloured sheet containing four printed pages. The pages contain colour photographs of the Warrnambool War Memorial, printed material and an image of the Returned Services League of Australia badge on the front page. anzac day, warrnambool war museum -

October Meeting (Newsletter No. 230, Jun. 2016) Community groups are the backbone of any community and the former Shires of Eltham and now Nillumbik are no exception. In our area there are some groups with a long history of consistently contributing to the development, enrichment and benefit of our local communities. Some we are well aware of, others not so much. At our next meeting we are pleased to have representatives from three long established community groups to talk to us about their histories, how they have been a part of the Eltham scene for many years and how their contributions have supported many other local organisations and initiatives.1:03:34 duration Digital MP3 File 75 MB audio recording, community groups, eltham district historical society, meeting, society meeting -

Kitchen Equipment, mechanical hand whisk c1940, c1940
An eggbeater is a hand-held device with a crank on the side geared to one or more beaters. The user grips the handle with one hand and operates the crank with the other, creating the rotary action. A hand-turned rotary egg beater was patented by J.F. and E.P. Monroe in 1859 in the US. This egg beater patent was one of the earliest bought up by the Dover Stamping Company, whose Dover egg beaters became a classic American brand. The Monroe design was also manufactured in England. In 1870, Turner Williams of Providence, R.I., invented another Dover egg beater model. The Hobart Manufacturing Company was an early manufacturer of large commercial mixers. Julia Eileen Gillard, Australia's 27th Prime Minister, on 24 June 2010 Julia Gillard became Prime Minister and the first woman to hold the office. She was elected unopposed by the Parliamentary Labor Party. The Prime Ministers walk at Ballarat Botanical Gardens has over time created a special and unique understanding of our Prime Ministers and the strength of belief, passion and understanding we had for these leaders. The different styles used reflect the times and the techniques used to undertake these portraits of leaders makes us consider those elements of official portraiture, including textures, sizes and features and proportions used by some of the artists. The artwork is of aesthetic and historic significance to the people of BallaratBronze bust cast on granite and concrete plinth.Julia Eileen Gillard Prime Minister 2010 - 2013prime minister, australian pm -

Document, Legatee Frank Doolan notes on the Flanders Field poem, 1970s
Photocopy of an article in the 'You asked us' section about 'Flanders Fields, and the man who wrote it' published in The Toronto Star 13 November 1971. The article discusses the controversy surrounding the wording of the first and penultimate lines and claims that poet John McCrae originally originally wrote 'grow' but changed it to 'blow' when asked to by the editors of 'Punch'. The photocopy of the article was supplied by Legatee Ken Rabling. Legatee Frank Doolan signed the note he wrote to accompany the photocopy and dated it 7/8/73. An item from Legatee Frank Doolan, who was on the archive committee and made attempts to collate the history of Legacy. An example of the ongoing controversy surrounding the disputed wording. The poem 'In Flanders Field' was the inspiration for the torch of the Legacy Badge with McCrae's call to the reader to take up The Torch, as the organisation did by looking after the widows and families of fallen soldiers.01302.1 Handwritten signed note in blue ball point, address stamped in black. 01302.2 Photocopy of a page from 'The Star Weekly', Toronto, Canada dated 13 November 1971.01302.1 Top right hand side 'Box 16'poem, history -

Memorabilia - Object, Ballarat School of Mines Boer War Memorial for Alfred Gresham Johnston, c1901
Former SMB mining student Alfred Johnston was the son of Charles Johnston of Cork, Ireland, and Elizabeth Jameson, the family owning a large furniture store in Fitzroy. Alfred joined the Fifth Victorian (Mounted Riffles) contingent at the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. The October 1901 Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) Students Magazine reported 'Alf. Johnston's gone. The news came as a shock to all of us at the school. He who was with us a few short months ago, in all strength of sturdy manhood, has met a soldier's death in South Africa, and we sincerely mourn his loss…. His heart was in the school, and he did his best to further its interests … His last act on leaving Australian shores was to send a telegram from Albany to Prof. Mica Smith, to whom he was warmly attached, wishing the School and all connected with it "Good-bye". In his short, all to short, life of 29 years, he had more adventure than falls the lot of most men, and possibly the spirit of adventure, and also, of duty, prompted him to throw in his lot with the "colors," and leave for the front. The news of his death comes to us with added weight of sadness when we remember that he was one of the organisers of the School entertainment last year to help swell the fund for the erection of a statue to fallen Victorian soldiers.' The SMB Annual Report of 1901 recognised the loss of one of their students: 'Mr Johnston was, until the date of his leaving for active military service in South Africa, one of our students. While here besides being regarded as a general favourite for his urbanity and manliness, he was noted as a faithful, diligent, and most successful student. The news of Lieutenant Johnston's death cast quite a gloom over the school and it was early decided that in addition to a letter of condolence sent to his parents a bronze tablet, suitably inscribed, be erected to his memory in some prominent part of the school. On the 4th November last the ceremony of unveiling the memorial tablet was performed by Professor A. Mica Smith in the presence of several members of the late Lieutenant A.G. Johnston's family, the President and Members of Council, the Staff and Students of the School, and a number of prominent citizens.Brass shield used to commemorate the death of former Ballarat School of Mines graduate Alfred G.
