"The marine Hydrographers of the British Admiralty wanted desperately to chart a safe passage through the Great Barrier Reef and the gap between the northern tip of Australia and Papua New Guinea, which would open up the new colony to the East Indies trade. They commissioned the Rattlesnake, a 28 gun frigate of the Royal Navy, whose captain was a keen amateur artist and whose name, Owen Stanley, was given to the mountain ranges of PNG. After the passage out, Stanley brought aboard Oswald Brierly, later to be the marine painter to Queen Victoria, and together these men made two voyages through the Great Barrier Reef, painting and sketching all the while. They produced a visual record of 19th century contact between Europeans and the indigenous people of Northern Australia and New Guinea in an album which contains the original of this copy. It is held in the Mitchell Library in Sydney." (ref. State Library New South Wales) Sir Oswald Brierly, a young marine artist, arrived in Sydney in 1842 on the yacht Wanderer. Settling at the whaling station of Boyd Town in Twofold Bay, he painted extensively and left a vivid account of the whaling life during the five years he spent there. However it was the open sea and adventure that lead Brierly to accept a position on the HMS Rattlesnake as shipboard artist. This item is associated with the anchor of the The Rattlesnake. The book was written by Deborah Hall in order to preserve the memories of Orbost locals as well as to record its early history. Local history tends to be less documented than other types, with fewer books and artifacts than that of a country or continent. Many local histories are recorded as oral tales or stories and so are more vulnerable than more well known issues. This book was won by Daisy Close, born in 1899, of Murrangowar. She was Ethel Pike's mother. Daisy Close married Ed Jensen. The Jensen family lived at Murrangowar in the 1890's. they were farmers and relatives still live in Orbost.This book, together with a writing box form part of the history of the Close family who were early settlers at Murrangowar in the late 19th century.A grey- covered hard back book with black and orange illustration. The photograph was submitted to the Indigo Shire Photo Competition by Kathy Adamo in the 1980s. The photo depicts two old gas lamps outside the Court House in Beechworth. The Court House was built in 1856 after Beechworth became known as the legal headquarters in northeast Victoria. Louis Herry had a bakery and general store in Lilydale and opened another in Mount Dandenong Road, opposite the Club Hotel. His wife, Kate, mostly ran the Ringwood store. The store was previously owned by the Blood Bros, after they moved premises closer to the railway station. From the Place of Many Eagles book, "Louis was born in Purdu, France, in 1855, and came to Ringwood from Walhalla in 1887 and erected a weatherboard house and shop opposite the Club Hotel, using a Miner's Right to secure the land. When he arrived, Louis was a married man with three children, Leopold (1882), Marie (1884), John (1886). He had married Kate Handforth at Walhalla in 1879. In later years Elizabeth, Minellia, Louis and Denise were born. Kate's father was known as the midwife of the Gippsiand township because he had once been a fourth year medical student in England, but earnt a living as a goldbuyer in Victoria. Marie Herry would grow up remembering her grandfather calling sometimes at Ringwood; he would bring the children jubilee Mixture to eat and he carried a revolver in his pocket. Often he would play the violin while Marie would stepdance on the kitchen table." Leo served in WWI, whose name appears on the Ringwood Clocktower.

Prior to 1939 access to the Island was by punt from San Remo or car ferry from Stony Point. A bridge was opened in 1940 but increased traffic and low load capacity was a problem. Eric Juckert He worked as a potter and painter from around 1949 to 1992 in Victoria. His pottery was also sold by the department stores Myer and David Jones under the trade name “Jacqueline”.He then set up a studio at Point Road, Grossard Point, Ventnor on Phillip Island, in 1959 where he continued working there until 1992. Henning Alfred Rathjen (1903–1968) was one of the Australian-born artists who established a new pottery studio to cater for local demand and post-war innovations in art pottery. Rathjen established his pottery studio in Melbourne in 1948, producing quality slip-cast wares over the next 20 years.
