They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Beryl initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street. The children attended Mont Albert Central School. The photo was taken at the Kidd family property. The location of this has not been able to be traced. It may be in a rural area. This is part of a large donation related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families with connections to the Surrey Hills / Mont Albert area.A sepia copy photo with a cream border depicting 5 children in a back yard; the 3 girls and one boy are sitting on a rustic seat made from roughly-sawn timber; the other boy is standing behind them. This is easily recognised by the square viewing tower located on the west wing of the house. The Sherar family owned 'Quamby' from 1900 until 1925, when it became Mosgiel Private Hospital. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in the 1920s; many associated with events and activities of the Church of England. The electricity sub-station and Lorne ...The Harris blue electric trains were introduced in c1955 and followed the 'Red Rattlers'. They had a long life and were named after Norman Charles Harris, Chairman of Commissioners of the Victorian Railways, between 1940 and 1950. The first 30 7-carriage trains, known as the first series, were constructed in the United Kingdom by Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company, and delivered between 1956 and 1959. Another 30, the second series, were built by Martin & King in Melbourne, and delivered between 1961 and 1967. The trains had either two or three sets of hand-operated dual sliding doors per carriage side. Later they were fitted with power doors. Initially, until late 1978, the interiors were split into smoking and no-smoking compartments. In 1978 smoking on trains was abolished. Carriages were also designated as First or Second class until 1958, when one class travel was introduced. they had florescent lights but no heating. Most of the early carriages did not have end doors and gangways between carriages, but safety concerns led these being incorporated in the sets delivered from mid-1966. With the exceptions of the last few carriages built, all Harris trains contained asbestos insulation. The first sets contained blue asbestos, and the later sets contained white asbestos in the linings for insulation of noise and temperature. Due to the presence of asbestos, they began to be withdrawn from the mid-1980s and most were disposed of in the 1990s, by being buried at Talbot Quarry in Clayton, some having been wrapped in plastic. Dave was an extremely keen sportsman (particularly bowls and cricket). He started the Kangaroo Cricket Club and worked for the Melbourne Cricket Club. Possible identification of Sid Ginn: There was a Sydney Herbert Ginn and family living in Camberwell. This is part of a large donation of material related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families.Sepia photo within a cream cardboard mount of a woman in a large hat seated with 2 men, one each side of her on a veranda. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. She had an older brother Geoffrey David (1913) and younger sisters Gwynneth (1918), Isobel Lillian (1921) and Shirley Inez (1928).This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. As the population increased there was a need for a church in Surrey Hills. This brick church was consecrated in 1922 and replaced the earlier one built in 1907 on the adjacent site in Union Road. After construction of the brick church, the earlier one became a Sunday School. The copper spire was added in 1926, which dates this photo as post-1926. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in the 1920s; many were associated with events and activities of the Church of England.Black and white photo of the 'newly' constructed brick Holy Trinity Church in Union Road, Surrey Hills taken from near the south-west corner of Guildford Road. Further up the hill is the earlier church. Both buildings are bounded by a simple post and rail fence. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Electoral roll details: 1919 68 Park Street, Hawthorn 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert So, Shirley would have been born while they were at Barton Street. On the basis of these dates, this may have been taken in Hawthorn. Identification of 'Grannie': If this is Lily's mother her name is Janet Deakin (nee Longmore - 1851-1939). If it is Dave's mother her name is Isabel Brown (1855-1944). The other woman is identified as May Little, who helped in the house. Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. A sepia photo of a well-dressed family in and beside a buggy. The group is comprised of a man, 3 women and 3 children. The chimneys of Victorian or perhaps Edwardian houses are in the background.On rear: "Grannie Dad Mum / Beryl Geoff Isabel" (in hand 1 and blue biro) "on left Isabel on knee" (in a different hand in black biro) "May Little (Helped in / House" (in hand 1 in blue biro). The lots bordering Whitehorse Road were nominated as potential valuable shop sites, while the Mont Albert Road lots were advertised as having ‘wonderful views’. The Outer Circle Railway Line is shown traversing the subdivision. Hills and Mont Albert in the 1920s; many were associated ...St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was built in 1886 and from 1904 until 1907 was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. As the population increased there was a need for a church in Surrey Hills. This brick church was consecrated in 1922 and replaced the earlier one built in 1907 on the adjacent site in Union Road. The house behind the church at 1 Montrose Street belonged to Mr W B Vine. There are 2 copies: the original donated print and an enlargement. The original is mounted on card with photo mounts along with 884, 885, 886 and 512. It measures 13 cm x 9 cm. Norman Carter took many photos of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert in the 1920s; many were associated with events and activities of the Church of England.Black and white photo of 3 men inspecting the construction site of the Holy Trinity Church of England in Union Road, Surrey Hills. The foundations are surrounded by piles of bricks. This is one of only a few ...Donor identifies the following: Parish priest - Dr W M Collins Queen - Molly Baker Attendants - Marg Wise, Lola Sans, Gertie Baker Flower girls - Madge Wise, Molly Brown, Rita O'Sullivan Probably taken in Our Holy Redeemer Hall, Mont Albert Road, Surrey Hills.This is one of only a few photos in our collection which are evidence of Queen Carnivals which originated as fundraising events. They were particularly popular in both Australian and New Zealand during the early 20th century. They were particularly common during and after World War I when they were used to raise funds for returned soldiers. It is currently the only photo in the collection of a social event connected to Our Holy Redeemer Church and the only one which includes Dr William M Collins who was the parish priest from 1933-1941. Dr Collins was a significant figure in the Catholic Church in Melbourne in the first half of the 20th century. REF: The Advocate: The first priest-editor by Fiona Power; Kairos Catholic Journal Volume 22, Issue 16. - 2 September 2011": Summary: Born in Kilmore in 1884, William Collins attended South Melbourne College and then the University of Melbourne, where he assisted in the formation of the Newman Society of Victoria. After graduating in arts in 1911, he worked at the Melbourne Public Library and the Education Department. In 1912, at the age of 28, he went to Rome, where he studied for the priesthood at Urban College. He obtained doctorates in philosophy and theology and was ordained on 3 June 1917. He returned to Melbourne and was appointed curate at St Mary’s, West Melbourne, and St Francis’, Lonsdale Street. In 1918, Dr Collins became editor of The Advocate. He remained in the role for seven years. Dr Collins was parish priest of Dandenong, Daylesford, East Malvern, Surrey Hills and Kew, and administrator at St Francis’. He died in 1959 and a Requiem Mass was held at Sacred Heart, Kew. Black and white photo of the participants in the Queen Carnival arranged on a stage in a tableaux of the coronation of the Queen.
