When he died in 2007, Wally Byrne, left a legacy of public service that many would be proud to emulate. Having served in the Royal Australian Navy in the Pacific during the Second War World War, Wally later joined the Victorian Civil Ambulance as an ambulance officer. In a career that spanned more than 35 years, Wally was based at Lonsdale Street, Latrobe Street and Fairfield. He became Station Officer at the busy Latrobe Street before moving into the Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) system. Promoted to District Officer he became officer in charge of communications and served in this role until his retirement. Chas Martin, one of Wally’s communications staff at Latrobe Street, recalled that Wally was an efficient and well liked manager. He was also a very social person. Having purchased a block of land at Christmas Hills, Wally and his family hosted regular weekend BBQ’s there for his communications staff, other ambulance officers, and their families. Wally’s son Jon, later joined Ambulance Victoria, became a paramedic and now holds a senior role in the organisation. A piece of guttering from the shed feeds into a broad piece of sheeting and then into the tank. Beyond the group is a truck laden with hay. The driver's door is ajar. Hills are visible in the background. Dated c.1950s.

Gus is wearing a pale hat and a light-coloured suit and is carrying a whip. He has a pipe in his mouth. He was a personal friend of William Hermon Snr. The photo may have been taken in Lysterfield. There is a large cleared area with what appear to be low hills in the background.

B&W photo shows a two-horse team harnessed to a small sled which is laden with bagged-up potatoes. A man wearing dark hat, waistcoat and trousers and a pale shirt is holding the reins of the horses, and two people who could be the Johns children, Percy and Cissie, are seated on the potatoes. The paddock slopes away and another hillside rises in the background. This is most likely Black Hill. dated c.1913.

B&W photo of a scene in Belgrave, taken Easter 1922 presumably by Miss Field. The view is downhill towards a paddock surrounded by trees. There is a cluster of perhaps half a dozen animals which may be cows or horses They are standing near fencing. There appears to be a building further down the slope and possibly another building to the right of the paddock. On the treed hills in the background another two or so buildings are visible. On the back of the photo 'Belgrave Easter 1922' is written in pen.

The down train has just cleared the crossing and a large group have either just crossed the line or are about to. One woman is carrying an umbrella. A horse-drawn carriage is in the process of crossing the track, obscured by a large shrub. There is a warning sign at the crossing saying 'Railway Crossing, Look out for trains'. Behind the train is a hill with scattered trees. The photo has a patterned, printed frame around it. On the back of the postcard is a written message. 'Am sending ad/vanced birthday/ cards to the/ little girls with/ love. Had a letter from Addie last/ week. A.S. Hunt' and in the address panel, 'Mrs W. Upton/ Wyndham/ Werribee.' A postage stamp has been removed from the card, obscuring the date stamp.

From TROVE: Chronicle (Adelaide, SA : 1895 - 1954), Thursday 1 April 1948, page 8 Legacy Conference In Adelaide Addressing delegates from all States at a convention of Intermediate Legacy Clubs last week, His Excellency the Governor (Sir Willoughby Norrie), who was accompanied by Lady Norrie, said that Adelaide regarded it as a privilege to be chosen as the venue of the first of what might become a series of annual conferences on the general policy of Intermediate Legacy of Australia. His Excellency stressed that the objects of Intermediate Legacy were to foster the spirit of comradeship, self-sacrifice and service, and to establish a high standard of citizenship and a spirit of responsibility in national development. 'Anything to do with Legacy has the strongest support of Lady Norrie and myself,' continued the Governor. 'Membership of Intermediate Legacy is open to the children of deceased servicemen who have passed the age of 16. There is no upper limit, although in 1945 a Senior Intermediate Club was formed in Adelaide for men returned from the services, or who, ineligible for service, had attained the age of 25. 'A record of an intermediate Legacy Conference in 1948.
