At the time there were 126,000 widows and 1,800 children and adults with a disability being helped by Legacy around Australia. There were approximately 6,700 Legatees in 49 Legacy Clubs. Whale bones found in harbour area. Dr Imlay operated a whaling outpost in Santa Barbara Bay in the early 1800's. John Morris ventured into whaling in 1848. The success of these ventures is not known. Retrieved from the Gabo Island Harbour in 1999, the collection’s two venerable whalebones are reminders of the whaling industry that was associated with Gabo Island prior to construction of the lightstation. Evocative relics of this long ceased activity, they are now also symbolic of today’s concern for protecting and saving whales. The whalebones are the only known artefacts in the collection that illustrate the period when European sealers and whalers intermittently used the island for their activities. The Imlay brothers, who operated from Twofold Bay, Eden NSW, used the island as a base and lookout up until about 1846, and several huts were erected.Whaling was last associated with the island in 1848, when John Morris surreptitiously ventured into this activity while being paid to erect lightstation buildings for the NSW government. Gabo’s historic jetty store, which stands as the oldest structure on the island, was thought to be built by Morris and is possibly associated with the activities that led to his dismissal. The whalebones were recovered from the harbour, close to the location of the store and the site of the former whaling outpost. The bones have first level contributory significance as evidence of the island’s whaling activities, which pre-date the history of the lightstation.1. Whale vertebrae, bleached white. 2. For many years from 1988, Legacy held a public speaking contest called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award. Schools were eligible to send along representatives that competed. These two photos show President Geoffrey Swan with a Lana Jenkings (the winner) of Genazzano FCJ College in Kew. Part of her speech was printed in the Melbourne Legacy newsletter and she was featured in an article in the Herald Sun on 26 June 1992, before she headed to Sydney for the National finals. The following was taken from a programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the Stat, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. A letter dated 25 September 1978, that Legatee Frank Doolan wrote to a Perth Legatee before the 1978 Conference in Geelong. In the letter he mentions that he is trying to ascertain details about the Agenda for the forthcoming Conference in Geelong in November 1978. In particular that a Pensions paper that is to be presented by Eddie Cohen, Chairman of the Melbourne Pensions Committee. Frank mentions that he is the sole survivor of the dinner held for the Geelong Club's inauguration. He says that they have lost 3 octagenarian Legatees in the past fortnight and this has prompted Frank to clear out some of his papers. He also mentions a carbon copy of a diary he had kept on a trip to Perth on the SS Kangaroo and how he appreciated Ivan's hospitality and comradeship on that visit. (see item 01132). The 1978 Geelong Conference had more than 550 Legatees registered at that stage and were planning to seat 600 at a Formal Dinner on the Saturday night. The Conference was to be opened by the Governor General on Thursday and close with a barbeque at the Military School at Queenscliff on the Sunday. By 1970 questions were being asked about the future viability of the three Melbourne Legacy residences - Harelands, Stanhope and Blamey House - and a committee was established to look into the issue. Chaired by A.V. Dore, the Forecasting Committee recommended that the Residences Committee be fully involved with the decision making, and a further sub-committee be established to pursue the matters raised in the report. There is no indication of what the project was beyond dates for the acceptance of tenders, start of construction and date of completion etc. Appears to be part of the review of the residences done at that time. Photos of two junior legatees laying a wreath at the Cenotaph during a annual School Children's Anzac Commemoration service. They are Gail Golding and Robert MacLean. While the ceremony is for all school students, often two junior legatees are chosen to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on the day. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. A photo of widows at trading tables in the Clubrooms at Legacy House. It is one of the annual fetes usually held in November. Items for sale included home made food items like relish and jams, and craft items. Legacy House held craft lessons throughout the year and often the items made were sold at the fetes or at a stall outside Legacy House during Legacy Week for fundraising. The lady in red is Billie Sims who has been President of the Widows Club. It is likely to be 1988 due to the photographers reference number meaning 17 November 1988 (ref no. 881117). In 1991 the 'Red Berets' landed at Sandown Racecourse on behalf of Legacy. In recognition of the support of the VATC President Sullivan presented a plaque to VATC Acting chairman Mr Geoff Bellmaine at a Tuesday luncheon. VATC is the Victorian Amateur Racing Club. The Melbourne Legacy created a widows' visiting group in 1981. Called the "Home and Hospital Visiting Programme". The visiting group was formed of widows who would visit women in hospital or their homes or nursing homes. Photograph of a Legacy event in Melbourne City Square in 1993. President John Stevenson is presenting a runner with a Legacy plaque for his efforts. It was part of the RAAF 70th Anniversary "Legs for Legacy" run down the eastern coast of Australia with the money going to Legacy. Melbourne Legacy received a portion of the funds raised. The run took 21 days and covered 5,000 kms, by 31 RAAF personnel. Two photos of widows with a handcrafts stall at Flinders Street Station in 1990. Widows met regularly at Legacy House for craft gatherings lessons. Some of the items the Widows produced were entered into an annual craft contest and exhibition. Many items were also donated to the annual Badge Week stall that widows organised. The stall was often outside Legacy House but in these photos from 1990 the stall was set up at Flinders Street Station.
