The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948. It was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse in 1991 forming the VMR Squadron of the regiment. Captain Kel Robertson commanded the guard. "Pte James W. FRAKEL"23020 was a member of the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment during WW1. His brother John requested that he give some details of the time since his enlistment. The letter is quite a detailed account from his enlistment to his injury and demob. Moved to Australia 19201, Tattered original letter from Pte James Farrel, from Feb 4th 1916, describing his history in the Army. Written on brown paper in small neat hand writing. This coat was part of the Presbyterian moderator's regalia which also consisted of a tri-corn hat, black bib, lace jabot, britches, silk stockings, gaiters and buckled shoes.Black wool, lined cutaway coat with a crew neck. The coat has seven pairs of black buttons and is secured edge to edge with a single hook and eye at the 4th and 5th buttons. It has lace cuffs, braiding and pleats at the back. The black lining is quilted at the top and there is a pocket on the inside right breast. The sleeves of the coat are lined with white fabric and the lace cuffs are secured with six pearl buttons. It was blessed and opened by Archbishop Carr on 20th November of that year. In January 1905, the Sisters of St Joseph took charge of the school. Archbishop Mannix opened and blessed the new brick school on 10th November 1918. From 1941-1972, Fr Tim Fitzpatrick was parish priest and head of the school. He is the priest on the LHS of this large school photo. Ewen enrolled at Ballarat College in 1888 at the age of 15 along with his brothers David, Cecil, Newton, Sydney and Neville. Ewen's father was Hon. T. D. Wanliss and his previous school was Toorak College IV class. The Wanliss family grew up in Wanliss House Sturt St, which was bought by the school in 1910. The house remained on the property until 1996. "Ewen Wanliss was born on 24th September 1873 and died in 1966. He was educated at Ballarat College, enrolled in1888, and was Captain of the College 1st XI and 1st XVIII in 1892. He served as 327 Pte E Wanliss, 4th (Imperial) Contingent, and as a Lieutenant (20th August 1900) with the 4th Imperial Bushmen in the South African War." The 1959 regimental camp was based on Beersheba Barracks Wangatarra and included wide ranging patrols in Ferret Scout Cars throughout north east Victoria. A regimental parade was held at the close of the camp and the regimental guidons paraded. This was the last camp before the National Service Scheme (1951-59) was abandoned. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. Appears to be part of sighting telescope for artillery. Further ID information has been sought from various sources, in including the Royal Australian Artillery History Company. The RAAHC have been most cooperative and interested in attempting to identify the equipment of which this item is a part, but with no firm details on its use or history at the time of cataloguing. Detailed communication between RAAHC and MERSL are available from the latter.Off-centre ring part way along barrel has engravings for elevation (?), ranging from 57 to 69 (see 4th picture above). Actual numbers engraved are 57 63 69, with small engravings to mark each degree between these intervals.
