Geological specimen - Porphyritic Rhyodacite
This specimen was recovered from the Nigretta Falls (previously named the Upper Wannon Falls), Victoria. The falls are fed by the Wannon River that has its head waters in the Grampians mountains. Approx. 10km upstream of the Wannon Falls, Nigretta is a multi-channel segmented cascade of smaller drops and bounces guided by patterns of joints in a much older (Devonian) rhyolitic volcanic rock. Both the Wannon and Nigretta Falls are iconic landscape features, entrenched in the history and identity of the region. These falls are particularly rare as they are the product of volcanic activity, which is unique in the context of the Volcanic Plain of Victoria. Waterfalls of this capacity are generally associated with the Uplands areas of Victoria, rather than the edges of the Volcanic Plain. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Many of these specimens were sent to research and collecting organisations across Australia, including the Burke Museum, to educate and encourage further study. A solid, dark grey mineral specimen with pale terracotta coloured inclusions. Rhyodacite is a volcanic rock intermediate in composition between dacite and rhyolite. Rhyodacites form from rapid cooling of lava relatively rich in silica and low in alkali metal oxides.GEOLOGICAL SURVEY / R / S 55 FELSTONE PORPHYburke museum, beechworth, indigo shire, beechworth museum, geological, geological specimen, porphyritic rhyodacite, lava, nigretta falls, upper wannon falls, dacite, rhyolite, volcanic geology -

Geological specimen - Mangan Hedenbergite
This specimen was recovered from Broken Hill, NSW. It was given the name Mangan Hedenbergite in 1819 by Jöns Jakob Berzelius in honor of Mr. Anders Ludvig of Hedenberg who was the first to define hedenbergite as a mineral. Hedenbergite, belongs in the pyroxene group having a monoclinic crystal system. The mineral is extremely rarely found as a pure substance. Mangan Hedenbergite is a manganese bearing variety of Hedenbergite. Manganese is the world’s fourth most used mineral after iron, aluminium, and copper primarily because it has no satisfactory substitute in its major applications. Globally, the steel industry is the primary user of manganese metal, utilizing it as an alloy to enhance the strength and workability of steel and in the manufacture of tin cans. Manganese is a key component of certain widely used aluminium alloys and, in oxide form, dry cell batteries used in electric vehicles. These batteries are in high demand. Another potential use for manganese may as an additive to help coat and protect a car’s engine. Manganese is also used for non-metallurgical purposes such as plant fertilizers, animal feed, and colorants for bricks. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. Geological specimen - Greenstone / Gabbro, Unknown
This specimen was recovered from Ceres West of Geelong, Victoria. Greenstone is the name for any metamorphosed basic igneous rock (in the case of this specimen, Gabbro) that gains its greenish colour to the presence of the minerals chlorite, actinolite, or epidote, hence the term 'green' and 'stone'. Greenstone is often formed through metamorphsis along a convergent plate boundary. In the rock cycle (the series of processes that creates the various types of rocks) there are identified three different types of rocks, which are the sedimentary, the igneous and the metamorphic. Metamorphic rocks started out as sedimentary, igneous or earlier metamorphic rocks but changed from their original condition under the effect of high heat, high pressure or hot, mineral-rich fluid. However, if pressure or heat is too high, then the rock will melt, resulting in the formation of an igneous rock. The name used to describe these types of rocks reflects this specific inherent trait of change, since the word “metamorphic” derives from the Greek word “metamorphosis”, meaning “change of form or structure”. Metamorphic rocks form in the Earth`s crust but can be also found on the surface, due to elevation of the Earth`s surface. They are divided into two categories: the foliated metamorphic and the non-foliated metamorphic rocks. Gabbro is a highly useful mineral that is often polished to create cemetery markers and kitchen benches. It is notable for its qualities of durability, being able to withstand extreme elements and wear. Whilst not rare, Gabbro is of great utility and has been highly desirable for its qualities. Gabbro is a medium to coarse grained rocks that consist primarily of plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene. Greenstone is often formed through metamorphsis along a convergent plate boundary. Gabbro forms due to cooling and crystallization of magma underneath Earth's surface. Greenstone/Gabbro/from Ceres west/of Geelong. Photograph, 1960s
Taken around 1960s, this photograph shows the banks of Lake Sambell. Lake Sambell is named after Mr. L. H. Sambell who was instrumental in the lake's formation. Lake Sambell is the original site of the open sluice operation of Rocky Mountain Mining Company in the 1800s and the early 1900s. In the early 1920s, it was reconstructed as a recreational lake and was formally opened to public on 6 October 1928. The opening event was attended by townspeople and Beechworth's Minister of Lands Mr. Bailey. In the late 1930s to early 1940s, Lake Sambell redeveloped. The first development aimed to raise the banks by six feet to double its present area and to make the water cleaner. Another redevelopment in the 1940s was made possible by the Beechworth and District Progress Association. It involved raising the banks to five feet to provide swimming facilities, paddling pool and caravan park. This photograph holds Historic significance because of its connection to the development of Beechworth district.Sepia rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paperObverse: Reverse: 3533 /beechworth, water scheme, water reserve, catchments, beechworth water reserve, beechworth catchments, municipal council, lakes, reserve, water supply, political projects, environmental changes, mr. l. h. sambell, sambell, rocky mountain mining company, recreational lake, minister of lands, mr. bailey, swimming pool, paddling pool, caravan park, swimming facilities, lake redevelopment, funding -

Book, Bridge and how to play it, 1901
This book belonged to the Warrnambool solicitor, Con O’Mahony (1863-1920). In 1883, he won the University of Melbourne Bowen Prize for his essay on the Federation of the Australian colonies. His prize, ten volumes of the ‘Lives of the Chancellors’, is today in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. O’Mahony had a legal practice in Warrnambool in the Royal Chambers in Kepler Street at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He was initially in a partnership with Messrs E.W. Klingender and Murray, then ,when this partnership was dissolved, he continued the business under the name of O’Mahony and later O’Mahony and Murray. He was actively involved in the management of the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute and was a member of the Warrnambool Hospital committee. The item here described shows O’Mahony’s interest in bridge-playing, a popular pastime at that time. This book is of some significance as it belonged to Con O’Mahony, a well-known lawyer in Warrnambool in the early 1900s. It also shows the interest in bridge-playing as a pastime during that period. This is a small hard cover book of 112 pages. It was published in 1901(eighth edition) and contains seven chapters on how to play bridge, a scoring table and an index. The last three pages are advertisements for other books on bridge. The cover is yellow with the title of the book, the author’s name and the publisher on the front cover contained within a scroll pattern with four coloured images of the four kings from a pack of cards. The back cover has a list of the British Chess Handbooks published by George Routledge & Sons Ltd. The pages have been annotated (presumably by Con O’Mahony, the Warrnambool solicitor) and some sentences and headings have been underlined.Four stamps – one of ‘May 24 1902’ and three of ‘C.O’Mahony, Solicitor, Warrnambool’.bridge-playing, con o’mahony, warrnambool -

It appears to have been a working register used in the 1950s, 60s and 70s and information has been added to the entries as it became available and as Council works were carried out in these streets. It contains information on the locality, wards, allotment numbers, lodged plan numbers, footpaths and printed information from the Victorian Local Government Departments. It sometimes gives the origin of the name of the street and some other miscellaneous information is included. It is presumed that the information contained therein has now been stored electronically. This is a most important ledger as it contains much valuable historical information on Warrnambool streets. It will be of great use to researchers. This is a loose leaf binder with a black leather cover and a black metal and cord binding mechanism. The pages are unnumbered but there is provision for insertion or removal of pages and there are leather alphabetical tabs protruding from the pages. The pages have blue ruled lines with blue lined margins and headings. The streets in Warrnambool are listed alphabetically and the information in the register contains both typed and handwritten material. The Australian Comforts Fund was formed during the first World War and was an amalgamation of various organisations which were sending items of comfort such as toiletries, clothing and food to Australian troops who were fighting overseas. It ceased its work and was dissolved in 1920 at the ceasation of the war but was started again to continue the same work in 1939.In Australia it rivalled the work of the red Cross and many of the volunteers involved were women. As well as making and providing items themselves there was major fundraising to purchase further items. Over the course of the war they provided over 1.5 million hampers. This certificate was presented to Mrs Steward for valuable services rendered to the Australian Comforts Fund during World War 1939-1945. The Australian Comforts fund was wound up in June 1946.This certificate recognises the work of one of our residents to a fund which was Australia wide and would have been one of numerous certificates presented around the country. The Australian Comforts fund was an organisation with which numerous people would have been affiliated and which also assisted many soldiers over the years. Fletcher Jones Clothing Factory was a key industry in Warrnambool from 1948 to its closure in 2005. The business was founded by David Fletcher Jones (1897-1977), a clothing manufacturer and retailer who worked as a hawker in the Western District following service with the A.I.F. in World War One. In 1924 Fletcher Jones opened three shops in Liebig Street selling men’s wear, hosiery and linen and operating a small tailoring business. He moved his shop to another location in Liebig Street and began to concentrate on men’s trousers production. In 1946 he opened a shop in Collins Street in Melbourne and eventually had stores and factories all over Australia. In Warrnambool he opened his factory at Pleasant Hill in Flaxman Street in 1948 and became a major Warrnambool employer, with over 1000 employees at one time. Tools, Name Stamp, Late 19th century/early 20th century
This is the stamp used by Ernest Phillips to mark his tools and his products. It was used both on wood and metal surfaces. Ernest Brighton Phillips (1875-1924) was born in Warrnambool and was apprenticed as a cabinet maker at the Warrnambool Box Works. By the 1890s he had established a furniture shop at the corner of Liebig and Koroit Streets and by the beginning of the 20th century he had the largest furniture warehouse and factory in Victoria outside of Melbourne. His products were sold all over Australia. He and his family lived at ‘Heatherlie’ in Koroit Street and today this site is occupied by the flats complex for senior citizens called ‘Heatherlie’. Clothing, Warrnambool Urban Fire Brigade Belt, Mid 20th century
This belt was worn with the jacket issued to members of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade in the mid 20th century. The jacket was part of the uniform that served both as a dress uniform and a work uniform. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863 following unsuccessful attempts to establish a permanent fire service in the town. It was prompted by a fire at the Flying Buck Hotel in Liebig Street. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade, now located on the Mortlake Road, has been successful in Victorian Fire Brigade competitions and demonstrations, particularly in the 19th century. The owner of the belt and uniform was John (Jack) Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade for over 37 years. This belt is of interest as it was part of a Warrnambool Fire Brigade uniform during the second half of the 20th century. It also has individual local provenance as it belonged to Jack Sizeland, a member of the Warrnambool Fire Brigade who retired in 1977 after 37 years of service. This is a brown leather belt with a gold metal buckle and nine punched holes on the buckle, two of them hand-punched. It has a leather attachment to keep the belt end in place. China, Spoon Rest, Early 21st century
This spoon rest is a souvenir item for tourists to purchase. It is a souvenir of the presence of Southern Right whales at Logans Beach, a few kilometres from Warrnambool’s Central Business District. Each year Southern Right whales have been migrating from sub-Antarctic waters to the east coast of Australia during the winter months. Some whales have been coming each year from approximately May to October (since the 1980s) to have their calves at Logans Beach near Warrnambool. This area is now known as Warrnambool’s Southern Right Nursery. The whales calve about every three years and stay in the local waters along with other whales for about three months and over the past thirty years or so over 100 calves have been born at Logans Beach. The whales are now a winter tourist attraction (if an unpredictable one) as they can be viewed from a raised purpose-built platform area and they are often very close to the shore. This spoon rest is of interest as it is a souvenir of the Southern Right Whale Nursery at Logans Beach, Warrnambool and it has a practical use in the kitchen. It indicates the popularity of whale-viewing at Logans Beach and the importance of the presence of the whales, both scientifically and economically as the annual whale migration to our waters is now a vital aspect of tourism in Warrnambool. This is a Warrnambool souvenir cream-coloured china spoon rest in the shape of a whale or fish. It has a hole at the top for hanging the item on a hook and the printed material is in black and includes a sketch of a mother whale and calf. It has the distributor’s name on the back in yellow writing with an outline of a map of Victoria with a dot to show the location of Warrnambool.‘Southern Right Whale Nursery, Warrnambool’ ‘Lady Bay Creations, Warrnambool, Australia’ southern right whales, warrnambool’s southern right whale nursery, history of warrnambool
