The history of this item is unknown. It has been suggested that SBC could be the initials of a person or could stand for an organisation such as Sandridge Bowling Club which was formed a year or two before the municipality, and the club, changed its name to Port Melbourne. It may stand for Sandridge Borough Council. The glass was donated to PMHPS by David GRAHAM, the last Town Clerk of Port Melbourne. David does not know the origin of the glass other than it was kept by a succession of Town Clerks at Port Melbourne Town Hall, to his knowledge going back to the 1970s. The glass is older than that and it is tempting to think that it could be from Sandridge Borough Council and has been kept by each Town Clerk of the municipality since the 1860s, 1870s or early 1880s. Ticket to picnic at Park Orchards on 21 December 1936, organised by the St Kilda Unemployed Organisation with the support of the St Kilda City Council, Mayor (Cr Alfred Levy), Archie Michaelis MLA, and 'other well-known gentlemen'. The ticket appears to have been perforated to allow vouchers, printed on the back (for bus, dinner, toys, stockings, ice cream and tea) to be separated and used. Park Orchards is a residential suburb 23km north east of Melbourne that was created in 1925 on land used for orchards when timber merchants Australis Sharp and John Taylor launched the Park Orchards Country Club estate. Buyers were not attracted to the estate, and for many years all that existed were a clubhouse and various sporting facilities. Victorian Railways Institute - The VRI was formed in 1909, and started operations at the 3rd Floor, Flinders Street Station, on 31 January, 1910. The Commissioners of the day saw a need for a Social Organisation, where Railway Staff could come together and discuss common issues, and relax in a friendly environment. The VRI was also, for many decades, the Primary Educator of all Rail Staff in their Duties and Tickets, from Train Crews, Station staff and the like, through to the Accounting Office team, everyone was trained at the VRI on how to do their jobs in the VRI. At the height of its power, the VRI would lead a member base of 30,000+ Families, all who would have a dedication to the Rail Industry and VRI. The Rays' badge was adopted by General Grand Council in Melbourne in 1935 with the design being submitted by South Australia. It was not to be worn on the Rays' regalia. "The shape of the badge represented the love with which every child of God is encircled. The blue circle stood for loyalty, the ivy leaf for friendship as well as recognising the Rays as a section of the Methodist Girls' Comradeship, and the white background for purity of mind and heart. The gold lines represented the good deeds which go out from each young life as rays of light bring sunshine to others. This meaning was adopted at General Grand Council in Sydney in 1948. A Kew Patriotic Carnival was held in Victoria Park in 1941. The event was promoted in the Argus newspaper as: "KEW CARNIVAL - A carnival, at which more than 25 local organisations will co-operate in raising funds for Kew Patriotic Society, will be opened at Victoria Park. Kew this afternoon. The carnival will begin at 2 p.m. to-day and will continue to-morrow. There will be afternoon and evening sessions each day. Vision Australia Foundation staff and clients were asked to make a square representing their base, which would be sewn together to represent the multi-faceted nature of the organisation. Unfortunately the patchwork wall hanging incorporating them was not made, however these squares were sent in: Warragul - sun and sunshine, clouds and water, a house on a hill with flowers around it, trees, water, people, a cow on a green hill that has daffodils and Pindari sewed upon it. Part of the PeopleScape Federation Celebration An initiative of the National Council for the Centenary of Federation, celebrating the contribution of Australians to their community and country. The final event of the year long celebrations, held in Canberra, the city that Federation created. The public art installation told the individual stories of Australians from all walks of life, from those living and those who had died. The massive sculpture depicted the life of the nation. The figures were nominated and decorated by individuals, groups of individuals and organisations from across Australia with every state, territory and region represented with approx. half from regional and the remote areas of Australia. The sculpture was installed in alphabtical order, each with a plaque at its base outlining the individual's achivement. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part of the local government district severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality. After meeting for 14 years in rented premises, in the Prince of Wales Hall, Wodonga Council built its first Shire Hall on the corner of High and Elgin Streets in 1890. In January 1877, a contract was let to add the brick building to the existing structure. This court house opened in June 1877. This gabled court house was designed by architect Peter Kerr and was constructed at a cost of £1,325. It served as the court house until it was replaced in 1920. It was then used as a private residence for many years. At various stages it was also operated as a restaurant, a real estate agency, an antique shop and currently operates as commercial offices.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.A black and white image of the original Court House and Police paddock. The Australian Service Canteen Organisation operated from 1959 - 1979 and served troops throughout Australia, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam by providing services such as canteens, bulk stores, snack bars, news agencies and bank agencies. ASCO became the Army Air Force Canteen Service [AAFCANS] in 1979. This included provision of services in Army bases such as the barracks at Bandiana, Victoria outside of Wodonga. Noritake is a well-known producer of a wide range of merchandise including high quality, western-style dinnerware for export. On January 1, 1904 the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in a small town near Nagoya, Japan. This report highlights the ongoing need to review and if necessary update and change policies and priorities if need be. The report explains that to provide recommendations and suggestions three working parties were established with two Legatees in charge of each group. In group1, 47 Legatees were involved, group 2&3, 59 Legatees involved in each group. Each group had a budget to work to and designated areas of Legacy activities to investigate and report on e.g. group1 would report on Accommodation, Housing, Handicapped Dependants, Firewood - refer to appendix A. Reports and suggestions are made in appendix B. Some recommendations suggest that Legacy and Legatees do not cease providing services but refer suitable applicants on to similar activities with other organisations if the need arises. This was due to declining numbers of Legatees to supervise, and those under the care of Legacy to paricipate. Due to declining numbers of Legatees and the number of families requiring help in certain areas, the report shows that Legacy needs to alter the way in which it delivers some of the services to Widows and families but still maintain the services that Legacy has provided previously. The photo appeared in the President's Highlights report in 1989 to introduce him as the new President. The caption mentioned 'Tony Norris was born in melbourne and now lives with his wife Barbara and two daughters in Essendon. Working at the MMBW in 1966 he was conscripted and joined the 7th battalion R.A.R. Between 1967/68 he saw active service in Vietnam and on return from service rejoined the Board of Works. He is currently Director of Human Resources of that organisation and joined Melbourne Legacy in 1972. To commemorate the two anniversaries of prominent organisations, Australia Post issued two stamps, as well as first day covers, an accompanying card set and first day postmark. One card contains a photograph of young Tilly Aston, with the AFB 100 anniversary logo, a stamp of a person with a dog in harness playing the violin. The other card is a picture of Audrie and Neil Mc Leod, who founded the Spastic Centre of NSW as part of their efforts to assist their child and others access services for those who were born with cerebral palsy. The 50th anniversary logo of the centre is featured on the card, as well as a stamp of a person in a wheelchair flying a kite. With the advent of audio content available through i-phones and other small devices, the demand for a dedicated audio, easily portable player for the blind and vision impaired became louder and louder. Two organisations competed to deliver this and Canadian company Humanware developed the Victor Stream. A portable hand-held device that could deliver audio content from SD card and was small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag. It could read a variety of formats, such as DAISY, MP3 and txt files, and had a built in voice recorder via the inbuilt microphone or an external one.
