The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the mounted arm of the Victorian Colonial defence force in 1885. It was under the command of Colonel Thomas Caradoc Rose (Tom) Price (1842-1911). Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse. The 38th Bn 1st AIF was raised in Bendigo in March 1916. The Battalion served in WW2 (although not going overseas) until finally being disbanded in 1962. An assoociation of Ex Members was formed after WW1.This is a small oval badge, colours - gold lettering set on a background of dark blue over red half ovals. This booklet contains the favourite sayings and quotations of residents of Warrnambool and surrounding districts. The source of the sayings is listed. It was probably produced as a fund-raiser for an organization or club and sold at Christmas time, perhaps early in the 20th century. This booklet is of high interest because of the many names listed from Warrnambool, Panmure, Framlingham, Nullawarre, Nirranda, Ballangeich, Allansford, Port Fairy Grasmere and other small towns. The booklet not only lists those residents at that time in history but also tells us something about those people, their philosophies and attitudes, through which sayings they chose. Well-known names include those of Terrington, Fidler, Burnie, Uren, Tomlinson, McGinness, Peacock, Murnane and Dallimore. This is a soft cover booklet of 22 pages. It contains the favourite sayings and quotations of people from Warrnambool and surrounding areas. The cover is blue with patterns down the left side and above and under the titles which are printed in dark blue. The pages are bound with white thread and they originally had a metal staple which has been removed. The cover is a little torn and stained. The community began planning the building of a swimming pool at Mt Beauty in the early 1960s and held events to raise money for it. The Australaisn Bittern is a partly nocturnal bird who resides in costal and sub-coastal locations in south-west mainland Australia, south east Australia and Tasmania. They can be found in wetlands, swamps and among reeds. These birds are mostly brown and yellow in colour and with short legs and a stocky body. The "woomph" sound made by the Bittern late at night is thought to have been the origin of the traditional Aboriginal myth of the Bunyip. The Bunyip, like the Australasian Bittern, was believed to reside in reedy swamps. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. This book was awarded by Geelong Grammar to Walter Armstrong in 1881. It was donated to the Ballarat College library by his grandson W Mick U Armstrong (1944). Mick attended Ballarat College 1937 - 1942. In 1936 the Weatherly Library was established at Ballarat College and a community book drive resulted in personal copies of books owned by members of the school community being donated to the library over the next 10-20 years. Mick Armstrong donated this book (amongst others) to the school library during his final year at the school. Postcard with a photograph of a group of unidentified Australian soldiers. There are 38 soldiers, including two officers, in the uniform typical of the World War 1 era. The soldiers are standing in front of a building draped with the Australian flag. The soldiers are in rows with each row elevated sufficiently to raise the row above that in front. It is possible that this photograph was taken somewhere in France during World War 1. The normal postcard format is printed on the rear of the photograph and is in the French language."CARTE POSTALE" and the headings "Correspondance" and "Adresse"

This biscuit/tea caddy was probably targeting the "theatre going" family or those who liked looking at the colourful shakespearian scenes. This item however demonstrates that the rural (Kiewa Valley) appreciation of classic English plays was, in this time period (early 1900's), just as strong as in the larger towns and cities. This item also presents the period in which the "olde" Elizabethian phrases and words were taught in regional high schools. Although this speech pattern and phraseology was of a specific time period and going out of fashion when Australia was first settled it was an inherited form of communication(higher social/economical level). In the context of the rural Australia "scene" and in this time frame of the elite "boarding school" generation this item was a visual reinforcement of the education level and position of the family who owned this tin.This item is highly significant because it not only presents the social aspects of early life in the Kiewa Valley but also the variety of educational levels and economical variations of the rural population within the Kiewa Valley. The egalitarian perception of the inhabitants of the Kiewa Valley was still at the infancy of early Australian social interactions. This biscuit /tea container was however a leveling of the socio-economic playing field of the time.This biscuit or tea tin, has besides having an outer lid (hinged), it also has an internal lid(with a circular finger grip). Although the shape is rectangular it has a slight concave bulge at each side of the centre of each of its main frame. It is made of pressed light steel and has a raised floor. The corners are bevelled and the outer lid has a bevelled slope ridge in parallel to the extremities of the main tin frame. There are painted scenes from the following Shakespearian plays on each side of the tin; "As you like it", "Hamlet" and on each of the bevelled corners are the portraits of Shakespeare(in the middle), the caricature mask faces of "the theatre" above and on the bottom section the "Director's chair"food storage, kitchen table container, domestic educational storage, shakespeare illustrations

This medal was struck to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) in London in 1929. The RCOG was founded by William Blair-Bell, who is said to have been largely responsible for the design of the College coat of arms and gowns, and to have contributed to the motto "Super Ardua". This medal belonged to Frank Forster.Round silver medal with ring for chain attachment. Front of medal features a raised image of a pair of hands closing protectively around a foetus in utero.
