In 1980, Mr Laurie Bennett presented the Kew Historical Society with a number of photographs and postcards from the estate of his mother Eileen Mary Bennett (nee Clark). His mother was the daughter of Lawrence FH Clark(?-1946) and Mary Clark (?-1925) of 22 Harp Road, East Kew, in whose yard the photograph was taken. A year before the donation occurred a notice appeared in the Canberra Times stating that: "BENNETT, Eileen Mary. — May 8th at Tuross Heads, N.S.W. Late of 22 Harp Rd, East Kew, (Vic). Ribbon, Australia Day, July 1915, 1915
The ribbon is a souvenir of the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. This was not the celebration of nationhood as we know it today, but a national fundraising effort during World War I. Across Australia, this day was set aside for fundraising to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and the collection of donations. There was also a stall outside the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys and souvenirs. Mrs Surman, then Stella Todd, was one of this group of girls, along with her sister Millie Todd. (See photograph, Registration no. 055.) Presumably the souvenir ribbon was purchased by one of the Todd family on this day.Small white-blue silk ribbon. Printed - black writing - flags - Australia and Britain. Map of Australia. Plaque - Brass Plate, The Samuel Carson Childrens' Ward, C 1925
Samuel Carson was a local farmer who in the late 1800's acquired land to the West of Warrnambool in the Farnham park estate and towards Tower Hill near Gorman's lane. By the time of his death on May 23, 1920 he left an amount of 11666 pounds. Apart from amounts left to individuals, he bequeathed one hundred pounds each to ten different orphanages, and homes for neglected children and the blind and leaving the remainder to charitable organisations at the discretion of his trustees.The donation of 3500 pounds in August 1922 was in the latter category. This plaque commemorates Samuel Carson's generosity to the newly refurbished Warrnambool Base Hospital. He left a son William who farmed at Yangery at the time of his father's death. This item is significant in that it links a local identity through his generous donation to the local hospital. It therefore has strong social,historical and interpretative value. His generosity is a significant part of the history of Warrnambool Base Hospital.Heavy rectangular cast brass plate with raised edge and text in capitals. Letter - Text, Letters to Mrs P Amery, 1941-1954
Various letters written to Mrs P Amery of 11 Maury Road, Chelsea during her role as the Honorary Secretary for the Chelsea RVIB Auxiliary. Correspondence between Head Office and the Auxiliaries (who provided a lifeline of donations) was a crucial way to maintaining a good relationship, providing support and acknowledgement for the hard work undertaken by volunteers. This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition; he retired in 1945. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. W T Nisbe... is probably William Thomson Nisbet, traveller of 'Maroona', Brenbeal Street, Balwyn listed in 1903, 1914, 1919 electoral rolls. His wife was Mary Grace Nisbet, son was William Thomson Nisbet Jnr (clerk) and daughter was Olive Thomson Nisbet (dressmaker). The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to.Black and white photo of Fred Lyons in one of his hansom cabs with his horse 'Barney' taken near Surrey Hills railway station. Another hansom cab is to the right of the photo and there is another man standing on the footpath. In the background are shops and the partial hoarding of W T Nisbe... is visible. The photo was taken between 1916-1927. This book was awarded to Lilian Jane Tweedie in 1893 for First prize in Latin (Preparation). Lilian enrolled in Clarendon Ladies' College in April 1891. In the original register it lists parent as William, occupation Barrister and residence as 58 Doveton Street, South Ballarat. Lilian's sibling attending Clarendon Ladies' College is Sarah Florence (enrolled 1884). Siblings attending Ballarat Clarendon College are George (enrolled 1889) and Arthur (enrolled 1885). Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Yields information about the presentation of a set of tickets that were presented to the City of Ballarat at the time of closure of the system.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, 22 September 1971 of tickets and passes being given to the City of Ballarat by Mr. Denmead. Shows close up photo of ESCo 1 1/2d tokens, a photograph of a presentation sheets of sample tickets dated 1906 and Mr. Denmead holding metal passes and two tokens. Notes the items as being passed to Council for safe keeping. Article notes that the tokens in the close up photo was owned by Mr. Lyle Kay of 5A Finch St. Ballarat. Yields information about the closure of the SEC Ballarat system in particular the changes made to Bridge St.Newspaper clipping pasted onto a single sheet of paper with two Punch holes on the left hand side with one hole through the photograph within the cutting. Clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Monday, 23/8/1971 (newspaper date, with page 10), with a photo and associated caption of Council employees painting out parking lines in Bridge St. in preparation for a bus stop. Has a single truck tram in the photo heading along Bridge St. for the city. Caption notes that the work was being done in preparation for the bus service introduction. Photograph taken either Saturday afternoon after shops closed or on Sunday as street has very few cars in it. Demonstrates the use of horse trams as trailers after the start of the electric trams in Ballarat and the street scape and tramway loading at the same time.B&W print of an ESCo tram just past the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling east along the north side of Sturt. Steet towing a heavily laden horse tram as a trailer. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tram does not have any destination box above the driver. Possibly summer 1905/1906. Numerous people in the street, some horse drawn vehicles in the photograph. Shows buildings along the south side of Sturt St. and part of the verandah of the building at the NE corner of Doveton St. On textured photographic paper. Yellow cloth backed paper ticket with white front, printed in black ink with fare value of $2.50. Blank or Unused Scholar's monthly ticket for use by under 15 years students, number No. 7386. Has form number "TYE 3-570" in top left hand corner. Space for an expiry date to be stamped on the ticket and name, address and school of the student.
