Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - Two-man Crewing Class at Wodonga, 1982
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.A photo of participants at the Two-man Crewing Course in Wodonga held from 6th to 10th October 1982L-R: Mick Steff (Inst.); Drivers – Wally Riley, John Wise, Austin Fulford, Tom Symonds, Bill McAnanly, Bob Hocking, L Fred Rochow, Ray Moulder Seated: Daryl Smith, John Wirges. railways wodonga, fred rochow, railways training -

Photograph - Bank of New South Wales, Wodonga
The first Bank of New South Wales building in Wodonga was located in a small cottage. The branch opened on 7 May 1872. At first it was conducted as an agency of the Beechworth branch. In October 1872 premises in Sydney road were purchased from Mr P. L. M. S. Chauncy for £650. When the bank commenced in the cottage the first account was opened in the name of Hillerman & Co, storekeepers, Wodonga. Another early account was in the name of William Huon, squatter of de Kerilleau, Wodonga. On 9 July 1873, the agency was converted into full branch under the management of Mr. Joseph Belcher. Other early accounts included Cronin & Callaghan, storekeepers; John Bassett Jnr, shoemaker; John Jennings, contractor; Ah Soon, tobacco grower, Kergunyah; John de Corney Ireland, collector of customs; Andrew Kyle, fellmonger; Rowan Lockhead, accountant; Alexander McKay, publican; George Pollard, farmer; Thomas Street, farmer; and Edmund Uren, gentleman, Buninyong. Organisations banking at the branch included Wodonga Building Society, 1873; Wodonga Mechanics Institute 1875; Wodonga Band Fund 1882; Talgarno Athenaeum, 1888; Talgarno Butter & Cheese Factory 1892; Wodonga Federation League 1893; Wodonga Brass Band 1895; Wodonga Benevolent Society 1895; Wodonga Fire Brigade 1897; Wodonga Rifle Club and Wodonga Racing Club in 1899 and Kiewa Polo Club in 1900. There were also numerous lodge and church accounts. The cottage was later renovated with a porch added in 1889 and an extension to the residence in 1898. The original house was eventually demolished to make way for a new bank and manager’s residence in Sydney Road in 1906. That building was again remodelled in 1969. It became a branch of the WESTPAC bank when the Bank of NSW and CBA Bank joined to become the Westpac Banking Corporation in 1982. After the building ceased operation as a bank, it has been the home to several businesses including a video store, a travel agency and a clothing store. These images have local significance as they record changes to a building which filled an important role in the commercial life of Wodonga.A series of photos both black and white and coloured which document changes in the former Bank of New South Wales building in Wodonga over time.Photo 1: On sign above verandah "BANK of NEW SOUTH WALES" Photo 2: On sides of building and above door: "BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES" Photo 3: Above door: "HIRE/ VIDEO MADNESS/ SALES" Photo 4: Above door: "WODONGA TRAVEL"wodonga businesses, banking wodonga, bank nsw wodonga, businesses high street wodonga -

Document - Speech, 24th Battalion (Gallipoli). Address by Frank Doolan (H27), 1970
A copy of an address given to a Legacy luncheon by Legatee Frank Doolan. He speaks of the 24th Battalion and their role at Gallipoli and in France. The story of the withdrawal from Gallipoli is interesting. Legatees Savige and HC Brinsmead were two of the three last lieutenants on the peninsula. Both were foundation members as was John Anderson who was also mentioned. He digresses to relate a story of an evening when he was with a 'VC mate' (assumed to be L/ Donovan Joynt) and they decided to speak to the editor of the Argus, Allan Spowers, about the newspaper's stance against the building of the Shrine of Remembrance. He related the paper published an article two days later in favour of the Shrine project and shortly after so did 'The Age'. The address also relates the return to war in 1939 and the formation of the 2/24th and it fighting in Tobruk. It was absorbed into the 9th division and later a new 2/24th was formed to wear the 'Red and White Diamond'. 'This unit consisted of younger men who had served with the CNF between the wars and included several sons of Legatees and several Junior Legatees. Our President Don, was attached for a short time.' (referring to L/ Don Simonson who was president in 1970). It went on to fight in New Guinea. Legatee Doolan's aim had been to link the 24th battalion with Legacy and suggests the book about the history of the 24th Battalion by Bob Serle was worth reading. He then introduced two other speakers, Squadron Leader Hicks, Conductor of the Royal Australian Air Force Band and Mr John Anderson of AWA. From the speakers record this event was in June 1970. The notation H27 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Legatee Frank Doolan was part of the archive project around the 1970s.A significant account of the withdrawal from Gallipoli and other experiences of the 24th Battalion retold at a Legacy luncheon. Speakers at Legacy luncheons were from very different walks of life and the subjects spoken on were many and varied. For many years the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the President would present them with a plaque of appreciation. Photograph, 50 years of service, 1989
Photos of Legatee Grat Grattan being presented with a 50 years of service certificate from President Chas Wilks in 1989. L/ Grattan was a long serving legatee, an article written when he turned 100 says that as a Legatee he was widely respected, he was 'something of a father figure - many of the girls were given away at their weddings by this kindly Legatee'. The article says Oriel John Grattan was born in WA and enlisted in the First AIF in 1916. He served in France and Belgium before he was wounded near Menin Gate. It continues with an interesting piece on the acquisition of Legacy house. It says: 'Perhaps his most lasting monument is Melbourne Legacy House. Through his friendship with one of the principals of the firm, Brown and Dureau, Legacy was given a donation of 30,000 pounds in 1944 (amount was 27,059 pounds according to Dureau Act).' A condition of the donation was that Legacy had only eight days in which to buy a building. A building in Swanston St was purchased for 18,000 pounds and the balance invested. But vacant possession was not possible and the building was sold in the early '50s and became part of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The proceeds plus the invested money enabled Legacy to buy its headquarters, Dureau House, in Swanston Street in 1955.A record of a Legatee Grattan's long service at Legacy being commemorated with a 50 years service certificate in 1989.Colour photo x 2 of Legatee Grat Grattan receiving a 50 year service certificate and a yellow paper label.legatee, recognition, grat grattan -

Document - Eulogy, Commemorative address delivered at the grave of the Late General Sir John Monash on 24 October 1937, 1937
An address delivered by Legatee Brian Armstrong (according to handwritten note on Envelope L.6) at the graveside of Sir John Monash in Brighton Cemetery on 24th October 1937, six years after Monash' death. In it he mentions how he, Armstrong, was one of "the great Company of junior officers and men who carried his orders into effect." and quotes from the message sent by Monash to all the men of the Australian Army Corps before a battle on 8 August 1918 when "for the first time on the western front we fought as an Australian army, with the green grass beneath our feet and a retreating enemy in sight." Legatee John Henry Brian Armstrong was President of Melbourne Legacy in 1937, and rose from Private to Lieutenant in the AAMC 22nd Btn. He was wounded at Dernancourt 25.4.1918 and Herleville, becoming a P.O.W. 18.8.1918. He was discharged as medically unfit 2.8.1919 and became a solicitor, serving as a Legatee for 54 years. Although Melbourne Legacy is not referred to specifically, it is clear that Monash' service to his country lives on in the work of Legatees in caring for others.Typed and hand written quarto paper, black on white, bound with green cord.Numerous annotations in black pen, and pencil.john monash, speech, obituary -

From Wikipedia: Major General Sir John Gellibrand, KCB, DSO & Bar (5 December 1872 – 3 June 1945) was a senior Australian Army officer in the First World War, Chief Commissioner of the Victoria Police from 1920 to 1922, and a member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Tasmanian Division of Denison for the Nationalist Party from 1925 to 1928. Concerned about the plight of fellow ex-servicemen, whose businesses were often failing, Gellibrand banded together with like-minded individuals to form the Hobart Remembrance Club. This organisation aimed to support ex-servicemen by providing employment and support for their businesses. The Hobart Club inspired the formation of Legacy Australia in Melbourne, which over time became a national movement, expanding its scope to the care of ex-servicemen's widows and their families. Sir John Gellibrand is considered to have influenced Stanley Savige to commence the process to form Legacy in September 1923. He joined over 300 Legatees to march as part of the Legacy contingent to mark Legacy's 70th anniversary, and he marched again for a a few blocks as he joined members of his wireless unit to catch up with old friends. Ron was just 14 and a half when he joined the R.A.N. in 1917 as a Boy Seaman. He served for 10 years, resumed civilian life, then in 1931 joined the RAAF Telecommunications. WWII kept him busy! In 1949 he became Assistant Air Attache in Washington, D.C. Ron retired from the Service in 1955 as Wing Commander. It comes as no surprise that Ron was awarded an O.B.E. for his tireless devotion to duty and you might sense Ron has been a tireless member of Legacy too." Plus a note in the Answer in 1997 after Ron passed away aged 94.A record of Legatee Austin being one of the last surviving World War 1 veterans and him attending Anzac Day in the 1990s.Colour photo x 3 of an Anzac Day march with WW1 veteran Ron Austin in a jeep.ron austin, jeep, anzac day, march -

Letter - Document, letter, 11/06/1979
Letter from Legatee Leigh Johns to Legatee President WR Mehan regarding guest speakers at Tuesday luncheons. He was suggesting that to increase attendances that they may consider a special luncheon once a month. Suggestions included Father-Son Day, Sporting Day, Political Day, etc. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from different walks of life and the subjects varied. This was a thoughtful proposal to have guest speakers from more varied life experiences.White paper, black type, a photocopy of a letter to L/- W.R.
