This plaque is the name plate of one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors. Alfred Ernest Brauer came to Warrnambool after graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1927. He initially took up the position as resident medical officer at the Warrnambool Base Hospital before entering private practice. he was appointed honorary medical officer at the hospital and was a life member of the Hospital board , serving as its president from 1952-54.he was a founding member of the South Western Victoria Ambulance service.as vice president, a position he held until his death in 1972.He had wide sporting and community interests including cricket, football, and horseracing. He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Lutheran church and was closely associated with Warrnambool High School and Warrnambool Technical School. he died in September 1972 and was survived by his wife and three daughters. His practice was situated in Koroit StWarrnambool, firstly at Ambleside where he also lived, then later on the other side of the street , in practice with a number of other doctors. James Richmond was born at Hamilton ,Lanarkshire in Scotland on 24th November 1840.He migrated to Australia at age 21, on the sailing vessel "City of Melbourne", arriving 23rd July,1862.He made his way to the Ballarat district and secured a position as head teacher at Weatherboard Hill State School. On 25th April 1866 he was selected as the first full time Shire Secretary, at a starting salary of 250 pounds per annum, (the previous position having only been part time). On February 26th 1867 James married Annie Dobson and they had four sons and two daughters. Their residence was a dwelling attached to the original Shire Offices at Learmonth.During his term he took on various other roles. In July 1873 "Richmond Park" on the foreshore of Lake Learmonth was named in his honour.James Richmond died on 29th December,1879 (while still in office),from a severe attack of rheumatic fever at age 39, leaving Annie to raise their six children.First fulltime Shire Secretary of the Ballarat shire,1866-1879. Many of the brigade and group base radios were situated in private residences and operated primarily by fire fighters wives who held the position of Communications Officer, either registered as a brigade member or informally. Edna Barrie was never registered as an operational brigade member but operated informally as an assistant to her husband Bon. She was however a member of the Melton Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary from its inception in 1968, a non-operational position. Edna kept up to date with radio procedure following the 1967 handbook; preparing maps, plotting compass points and taking notes on weather forecasts from the SA Border and Western District. Daily notes were taken in anticipation of fire warnings. These log books and daily radio traffic were incidental to the regular radio schedules. The Satin Bowerbird is commonly located around the eastern and south-eastern coast of Australia. They reside in wetter forests and woodlands, and nearby open areas. They feed mostly on fruits throughout the year but in summer will supplement their food supply with insects and in winter with leaves. The Satin Bowerbird is most commonly known for it's practice of building and decorating it's bower. They will often collect objects of bright blue to decorate the bower including straws, clothes peg, parrot feathers, pens, marble, string, glass and bottle tops. This decoration is done by a male Bowerbird in the effort to attract females. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.This taxidermy Satin Bowerbird specimen has dark black/blue glossy plumage and a pale coloured bill of small size. The bird is of a medium size compared to other species of birds and has pale legs with short talons. The eyes are made of strikingly blue coloured glass which represents the violet-blue iris of this bird while living. The bird has a short tale and has been stylized in a leaning/crouched position with it's back arched upwards and head out long. This specimen stands on a small platform and there is some deterioration to the tail feathers which protrude beyond the platform which may have otherwise provided some protection. This item can be seen as a hand piece belonging to a logger or farmer spanning over one hundred or more years. The equipment was made to perfection as a hand tool and has not been improved upon since its introduction into the logging industry or farming fraternity. It can be used by one person or two (husband and wife or father and child). Its versatility is ageless. It can be used for domestic clearing of the paddocks, or for domestic fire places and stoves or commercial logging up until the 2000s (introduction of specific logging trucks that cut and treat the trees in one process).This item is very significant to the rural and logging regions within the Kiewa Valley. It has been used for domestic wood cutting and for industrial logging in the mid to late 1900s. It was used when clearing land for the SEC Hydro scheme and to allow for the introduction of the Mount Beauty construction workers' village (later developed into the town) The great advantage of this saw was that it uses only muscle power and can be located where ever a lumber "Jack" or property owner can venture. either by foot or by horse.This saw is a Warranted Superior One/Two Man Logging Saw. It has 68 teeth and is 42 inches long. At a position of one inch (2.5cm) from the end is a hole one inch down from the leading edge. There is another hole 45 cm in front of the handle. Both these holes are for a "helper handle" which when in use renders this logging saw fit for a two man operation. This is a cross cut saw for cutting down vertical trees (horizontal cut) The handle is made from wood and fastened to the blade by three heavy duty screws. The post World War II migration of European "snow skiiers" into Australia combined with the construction of Hydo Electricity Schemes in both the N.S.W.and Victorian Alps regions, opened up these winter snow areas to a greater influx of tourists and holiday adventurers interested in "winter" sports. The ability to project, on a global scale, skiing facilities of international standards to those in the northern hemisphere during their summer has opened up the Australia ski resorts and their facilities to a much greater winter sport orientated population. These cross country skis were purchased by a member of the Bogong Ski Club and were part of a bulk ski stock consignment from Finland in 1966/67. They were introduced into the Victorian Alps to encourage skiers to take up cross country skiing both at Falls Creek and Mount Buller. This initiative spurred on the now annual 42 kilometre cross country "Kangaroo Hoppet" race at Falls Creek. This race is currently the biggest cross country snow skiing race in Australia. These snow skis were made in Finland. They are wooden (hickory) skis and made from four strips (glued and shaped) pieces of wood that are not laminated. There is a painted blue flash on the top of the skis that extends the full length of the skis. The face of the underside of the skis is flat and is coated in black Stockholm tar. Glider or grip wax was applied onto this base. The top body of the skis is tapered from shoe position to both front and back tips.Tapered curvatures from foot radiating to all sides provides the required aerodynamics. This photograph frame with its decorative dragon and bamboo shoots was typical of the early 1900's when photography was in the hands of the professional artist. It was in a period before the "instant" photo and required a dark room and processing liquids for development. It was therefor in a time when photographs were "shot" only at important events, be they family or public occasions. Good quality picture frames such as this item were a part of the "reverence" of photographs per se.This photograph frame holds and protects, part of a very significant occasion, the 90th birthday photograph of the matriarch of one of the founding families within the Kiewa Valley. The frame therefore has historical significance.This silver painted aluminium photograph frame has a glass front pane within a formed inlay and a formed inlay at the back. The anchor points, at the back, for securing toggles are in place but not the toggles. These toggles were installed to allow the photograph to be securely positioned within the correct alignment of the the frame.The metal front plate has seven rivets holding the cloth covered cardboard back frame to the metal front cover. The front part of the frame has sculptured dragon and wild bamboo shoots and is boarded with a plain border pattern. The back panel to secure the photo and hold the stabiliser flap is missing. This analog voltmeter is quite a large (industrial type) apparatus which permits the easy monitoring of electrical variations within the large SEC Victoria Hydro Scheme's electrical generators. These generators are powered by the hydro force of "stored" water at a higher altitude. The establishment of both the NSW and Victorian Hydro schemes was achieved from the mid 1900's to the 1960's. At this point in time the need for additional power sources to quench both an industrial and domestic demand for electricity was purely an economic and not and environmental (carbon reduction) factor. This hydro scheme was instigated by "the Government of the day" as a bold move and was the major force of the World War II refugee and "technical" workforce inclusion of skilled and unskilled migration into the Australian environment. Although this mass "invasion" of workers with families was thought of in some circles as intrusive, the expansion of population post war years and its integration into the Australian rural sector, produced the multi- lingual multi-cultural diversity of later years. This voltmeter is very significant to the Kiewa Valley as its use was introduced during the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Although only a small apparatus it was part of the explosion of human resources into the valley. This influx of population transformed the region from that of a basically quiet rural region to one which evolved into both an industrial and a larger residential community. This evolution in the valley created a change, not only in the "physical" landscape but also the socio-economic expansion which permitted other "tourist" based industries into the valley. This analog volt meter has two metal rods protruding from the "back" of instrument with screw on points for the negative and the positive leads allowing the "current" to flow across the calibrated resistors to indicate on the "face" side the strength of the voltage "power". The "face" of the instrument has a zero point and then five evenly graduated marks from Zero to the "100, 200 and 300" marked points of measures. A large "V" below these pointers indicates that they represent levels of voltage. Three small screws hold the "face" in place. Made from a cast brass item, nickel plated to indicate the position held by the wearer as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap or the uniform. Exact use of the badge not known at the time of cataloguing. On the back of the back of the badge in letters is the name of the manufacturer - "Stokes & Sons". The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Swan Decline closed and history preserved In a major rehabilitation milestone at Kangaroo Flat, the Swan Decline Bendigo’s primary gateway to underground mining, was permanently closed in December 2022. Important parts of Bendigo’s gold rush history were also preserved from the onsite office buildings with 19 boxes of records, and 1350 old photos being scanned and provided to the local historical societies and the Goldfields Library Corporation. A volunteer from the Bendigo Historical Society, Kay MacGregor, also scanned approximately 40 bookshelves of newspaper clippings to assist with recording and preserving geological drilling locations.Black and white photocopies of photographs of Swan Decline, showing some stages of underground construction. The Trefoil Guild consists of former members of the Girl Guide Movement. It is a self governing and self financing guild that provides support to the Girl Guide movement. Originally formed as "Old Girl Guides" in 1936, it became the Trefoil Guild in 1944/45.Grreen cloth banner. The words Merle Bush Trefoil Guild at the top. Taking most of the centre a gold triangle, at top right a poppethead and top right a bottle of wine and grapes. COL Lawrence FitzGerald OBE was Director of the Survey Corps from 1942 to 1960 and was succeeded by COL Don Macdonald AM, MID. COL Frank Buckland OBE, MID succeeded BRIG Don Macdonald AM, MID as Director of the Survey Corps in 1967. He served as Director until 1972. BRIG Macdonald AM, MID was promoted before assuming the honorary position of Colonel Commandant of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Jean Phillips was a primary school teacher in Queensland before visiting Ballarat in 1989. She was offered a position of Playgroup Co-ordinator at the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative. In early 1990 she was appointed as Coordinator of the Ballarat School of MInes Koorie Support Unit. Jean Phillips aimed t- get more students into mainstream courses and help them gain the necessary qualifications for employment. Albert Thurgood's is one of football's greatest-ever players. Nicknamed 'Albert the Great' he was big, strong, and it was said he could play in any position. He was instrumental in Essendon's premiership wins in 1892, 1893, 1894 and 1901. He was also a phenomenal goalkicker in an era of low scores, leading the VFA/VFL goalkicking in 1892, 1893, 1894, and 1901. Benjamin Jackson Bartley was elected to the Indigo Road Board in 1871 and became the Chairman. Three years later when the Indigo Road Board became Chiltern Shire Mr Bartley became the first Shire President. This position he held for eight consecutive years and again in 1883-1884 and 1895. These town photos are part of a collection donated by Elaine Mann and Olive Codling. Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.Wodonga Home Furnishers located beside the old railway crossing in High Street, Wodonga. Wodonga Home Furnishers was owned by Les Cheesely who was also a Councillor on Wodonga City Council from 1981 to 1994. The building was demolished in November 1998 to make way for the realignment of Elgin Street to join what was then Jack Hore Place.
