In 1894 the Victorian Braille Writers Association was established in order to create a braille lending library. Such an endeavor also meant a need of space for storage. At first the library was accommodated in the home of Mrs May Harrison before moving to the home of Mrs Dickinson two years later. Eventually, with the help of donors, a space was rented in the Block Arcade to house the 1300+ volumes it held and the yearly increase produced by its braille transcribers. Fortunately in 1918 the Trustees of the Edward Wilson Estate provided 4000 pounds to pay for a new building in Commercial Road. The Villa Alba Museum is cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. These include artefacts (wallpapers, textiles, carpet samples), furnishings, printed materials (catalogues, books, periodicals), and pictures (photographs).Part of a group of curtain furnishings which includes a curtain with original fittings, fringe and braid unpicked from other curtains, and these six curtain tie backs. The six curtain tie backs are identical, though one pair is shorter. The tie backs comprise a length of soft, loose (floss) silk cord, made of two thick strands twisted together (cable cord). An elaborate tassel is attached to the middle of each cord, to weight the tie back in an elegant loop, with the loose ends attached to hooks or pins on the window frame. Each tassel is formed of a turned wooden mould, covered with floss silk thread, and further decorated with knotted netting, applied braid, and glass beads. The end of the mould has a large flattened shape, from which hangs a ring of long, bullion metal fringe. This may be silver-gilt: untarnished parts are still true gold colour, while the majority of the fringing is tarnished black. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-23: Joseph Richardson came to Australia in 1837 from Liverpool, England. Sarah Arbuckle and her two sisters arrived in 1850. Sarah and Joseph were married when gold was discovered in Victoria. They went to the diggings and had some success. Joseph bought land on Phillip Island when it was open to freehold selection in 1868. The family moved to Phillip Island shortly afterwards, to a house they built on a hill west of Cowes. They called their home "Everton" after a Liverpool suburb. The house still stands in Church Street, known as "Tallawalla". 466-24: The McIlwraith family came from Melton, Victoria to Heath Hill, Rhyll in 1869. They played an important part in the early history of Phillip Island. James was a foundation member of the Trust, John and Alan played their part in the local scene. Living Memorial is Trust's Gift To A Shire Bathed in bright sunshine and now at its best, the Memorial Garden of the Eltham War Memorial provided a perfect setting for the handing over of the Memorial to the people of Eltham last Saturday afternoon. Speaking for the War Memorial Trust, Mr E. P. Harmer, chairman paid tribute to the unselfishh service given by its members , some for more than 20 years. Special tribute was paid to the late Mrs Ada Lyon, a foundation member who, Mr Harmer said, made the Trust her life. A memorial plaque to Mrs Lyon was unveiled by foundation members Mr N. Kerr. Facilities. An infant welfare centre, a pre-school cente and a children's library are built within the memorial. Funds for the buildings were raised by the Trust and theh women's auxiliary. Accepting the Memorial on behalf of the people of the Shire, the Shire President, Cr. L. C. Docksey, assessed the value at beyond £50,000. To make the transaction legal, Cr. Docksey paid the sum of £1 to the Trust. Many foundation members of the Trust and councillors of the Shire were among the official guests. The Shire of Eltham Brass Band provided suitable background music for the ceremony and at.
