Amendment with gummed portion on side of the back page (un-numbered) - used to revise fares, parcel and luggage and charter rates in August 1966, for Bendigo and Ballarat from 1/9/1966. Item was on display in cabinet of 39 until 10/2004, ex filing cabinet 1992. Five copies held. Three copies added 10/7/05. One copy has words "H. These boots had a metal plate inserted in sole to protect the feet of personnel wearing boot. This was after earlier boots without this protection did not protect the wearer from sharpened spikes eg bamboo set in pits or “punji” pits, during the Vietnam war. The laces were done up by knotting one end,threading from bottom hole across to opposite hole,up next hole on same side,across to opposite hole etc. This meant that only one loop per opposite holes was all exposed for a quick and easy cutting to release the boot in case of injury to wearer.These boots were typically worn on parade,training and in combat during the Vietnam war era and after.The LEFT boot solid black leather uppers with split leather tongue sewn to sides - making the boot semi water and insect proof.The sole is hard black rubber compound with 7 cleats on sole and 3 cleats on heel,all part of rubber sole. Woven black cotton laces. 30 mm leather reinforcing strip sewn on inside top of boot. 11 by 5mm metal holes per boot for laces. Sole is welded on. “Dunlop made in Australia” and “5/5” on sole in front of heel. A saw is a tool consisting of a tough blade, wire, or chain with a hard-toothed edge. It is used to cut through material, very often wood, though sometimes metal or stone. The cut is made by placing the toothed edge against the material and moving it forcefully forth and less vigorously back or continuously forward. This force may be applied by hand, or powered by steam, water, electricity or other power sources. An abrasive saw has a powered circular blade designed to cut through metal or ceramic. In ancient Egypt, open (unframed) saws made of copper are documented as early as the Early Dynastic Period, circa 3,100–2,686 BC. Many copper saws were found in tombs dating to the 31st century BC. Models of saws have been found in many contexts throughout Egyptian history. As the saw developed, teeth were raked to cut only on the pull stroke and set with the teeth projecting only on one side, rather than in the modern fashion with an alternating set. Saws were also made of bronze and later iron. In the Iron Age, frame saws were developed holding the thin blades in tension. The earliest known sawmill is the Roman Hierapolis sawmill from the third century AD used for cutting stone. John Parkes avoids technology. This work expects the viewer to understand the importance of the hand and time… The blanket and the apron were gifted by friends in Germany. The apron was worn by Helen in her studio practice as a jeweller. The blanket was a find in the cellar of their Munich apartment. The red moleskin cloth was an OP shop find and originally a eucalyptic green. This cloth was discharged and overdyed. Cloth will often sit around the house, unattended, until ideas germinate. Is “Art” about “Art” or about the “Artist”?... There is a Buddhist notion of not writing in the first person, in that the Ego is not employed. There is a Japanese tradition “Boro” in which cloth is not discarded but repaired. The handmade basket has a variety of pieces of vintage sewing items as listed in the detailed Description. These would have been used in the home for repairs as well as pieces sewn. Mrs Pratt owned the sewing basket and it's contents - she lived in Beenak Road, Wandin, Victoria.An open rectangular shaped cane woven sewing basket with three bands of green and tan raffia woven around the sides. It had a lid which is missing but there is one twisted wire loop where the lid would have been attached. Inside are various pieces of vintage sewing items including; large and small cotton reels with cotton thread, very small cotton cardboard reels with thread, plastic container of pins, a handmade wooden darning mushroom, a brightly coloured tin of pins and needles, two short zips, a piece of embroidery material stamped with a pansy pattern to sew, a Birch brand packet of sewing needles, a Delyta brand "Nu-Bras" Brassiere Repair Set, two "Mendex" Cuff Savers for Men's Trousers, a Happy Home Needle Book with a few needles, and a paper pattern for Cross Stitch. Yields information about the incidents/accidents that can occur on a street tramway system - collisions resulting in the rare virtual total demolition of a tram in Ballarat.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, front page, Thursday, 17 September 1970 with photo, of the collision between No. 20 and a semi trailer the previous evening in Victoria St. that wrecked No. 20. Gives quotes from eye witness, gives name of tram driver, Ian Maxwell Tierney, who jumped from tram before the collision, said the only passenger who was not injured was Miss Maree Bernadette Matthews about 17 of Reid St. Ballarat and the truck driver Ronald Frederick Cox 35 of Hickman St. was trapped in the cabin of the truck for some time. The swift winder together with lace pieces was bought in Europe by Nan Warner, who was a retired school teacher and together with her husband Max travelled to Europe and China after they retired. Nan joined a lace making group in the late 1970s who until well into the 1980s and 1990s the group met in each others homes once a month in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne around the Vermont and Ringwood area. The group later became part of the Australian Lace Guild. The donor was also a lacemaker in the group. This music was used by Frank Wright who had been tutored by Percy Code. Frank Wright won the Australian Open Cornet Championship using this music, and won the gold medal for the highest mark in the British Colonies. Percy Code was born in Melbourne on 03 July 1888. He started learning the violin and piano at the age of eight. Three years later his father, Edward, started tutoring him on the cornet. His first competition was in October 1902 in Ballarat's South Street Competitions. Percy Code was Musical Director of Ballarat City Brass Band from 1913 until 1921. He was Frank Wright's teacher. Code apparently lived in a large house just west of where St Peter's church (Ballarat) now stands. Percy Code toured the world as principal cornet with the 'Besses o' th' Barn Band.' He returned to Australia in 1912. Frank Wright at one stage rode his pushbike from Smeaton to Ballarat for lessons. Leaving Australia for America in March 1921 Percy Code obtained an appointment as trumpet soloist for the 70 piece San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He returned home two years later and became bandmaster to the Prahran City Band in 1925. From 1938, as part of Australia's Sesqui Centenary celebrations, Percy Code conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for the ABC orchestral concerts in Sydney Town Hall. His career with the ABC came to an end in late 1951 due to poor health. Percy Code died on 17 October 1953. This was knitted by Marjorie Burton during WW11 in England. She used to knit while in an air raid shelter escaping the bombing with her young daughter. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from a middle-class, working, church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who mademany of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. Her father served in Civil Defence during the war. Marjorie was in Birmingham during the war and remembered sheltering with her young daughter, Anne (Quaadgras) in the air raid shelter during bombing. This item is an example of a handcrafted item and reflects the handcraft skills of women necessary during WW11 when clothing became scarce. Clothes rationing began on June 1, 1941, two years after food rationing started. Clothes rationing ended on 15 March 1949.A narrow, detachable hand-knitted lady's collar.
