In September 1967 Legatee Brian Armstrong gave a speech about the first 40 years of Legacy. He mentions; 'what, in all humility, does our word 'Legacy' conjure up? To each of us, no doubt, something different, according to the the period of our service and our particular interests. To the early ones, many pictures, grave and gay, many voices, two perhaps in particular, both on the brink of a discovery. One, rather triumphant, - 'I've got it, we will call it "Legacy", but we will give instead of take, and look for nothing in return; and two years later, a quiet voice, still with us, thank heaven, "Have you ever through what the dying wish of our cobbers would have been?". This is our link. On the one hand, the still sharp memory of the lost men of Anzac France, Belgium, and the Middle East. One's own private nightmare - the expression in the eyes of the men of one's own Platoon, particularly towards the end, when they were warned for yet another operation. Men who by some miracle had survived twelve and more separate and individual hells between Gallipoli and Villers-Bretonneux and who knew full well that the Hindenberg Line was yet to come. And then we lucky ones were home again . . . Now here it was, the link, the chance to do something of real personal value, something with a real future. We do not speak a great deal of these things, nor would I do so now if I were not sure that everyone of you who wears this small badge has travelled much the same road. " He mentions the Legacy Diary belonging to Frank Meldrum, from 1925, with records on the start of Legacy. It is believed this diary was one of many documents lost in a fire. He mentions the fire destroyed the home and valuable library of Legatee Jimmy Downing. The notation H30 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. The group was led by RVBA President Bob Poulton, with Vice-President Sam Murphy, Treasurer Cliff Martin and 13 councillors. A commemorative pennant was presented to Club President Arnold Bartling. Special mention was given to Merv Pottenger and his garden helpers for the beautiful gardens around the greens.

The Anglican Cheltenham parish was created in 1865 by excising a portion of the parish of St Andrews Brighton. A small brick church was completed in 1867 to serve a rural community stretching from Brighton South (Moorabbin) to Mordialloc. 1867 St Matthew's Church of England was erected in Cheltenham beside the Nepean Highway near Charman Road. Wilfred ‘Billy’ Kent Hughes (1895-1970) appearing to question Bedouin men in Egypt. Kent Hughes was a Gallipoli veteran and later in 1917 won a Military Cross and was mentioned in dispatches four times. He served in World War Two, was captured at the fall of Singapore in 1942 and spent time as a Prisoner or War. He later was made a Knight of the Realm, served in the Menzies federal ministry and played a key role in organizing the Melbourne 1956 Olympics. This sepia digital image shows the Austin car which was donated to the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) in !937 by the Rotary Club of Victoria. It was used by the Matron of the MDNS District Division to visit patients weekly. The photograph is taken outside the MDNS Headquarters at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood. The photograph appeared along with an article in The Age Friday May 7, 1937. The photograph appeared in the MDNS Annual Report of 1937. On page 8, mention is made of J.D Johnston Esq, President of the Rotary Club of Victoria, presenting the Austin vehicle to MDNS. Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) has had various modes of transport over the last 130 plus years. At first, from 1885 as Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), their Trained nurses (Nurses) walked the streets and lane ways amid the slums of central Melbourne. As the Society expanded public transport was used, and bicycles were bought by the Society in 1903 and used in inner areas until 1945. During the Spanish flu epidemic, in 1919, MDNS appealed for assistance to procure Motor vehicles so the Nurses could visit an influx of cases. Through trusts, grants and donations four 'Ford T Model' cars were procured which enabled the Nurses to triple their visits. Through constant use the cars were in such a poor state two were sold in 1922 and the others later. In 1922-23 three Peugeot cars were purchased and a woman Chauffeur, 'Miss Sword', was employed who lived in the Home and was also in charge of the garage. MDNS was expanding and a Motor Auxiliary was formed in 1929 to take the Trained nurses (Sisters) to patients, and some Sisters used their own cars; even a motorcycle was used by one Sister in 1933. All these forms of transport were intermingled and in the early 1950s, and now as Melbourne District Nursing Service, seven Ford Prefect cars were bought followed by twelve Ford Anglia cars 1955. Having received Royal patronage; the now Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) had its own fleet of Holden vehicles by the mid 1960s and the Motor Auxiliary ceased operating in 1971 as by then all staff employed were required to have a driving licence. Seat-belts had been introduced to Victoria in 1959 and District fitted them to their cars from 1962, even though they did not become compulsory until 1970. The Holden vehicles were replaced with grey Holden Torana vehicles. After several years the fleet was changed to white Toyota Corolla vehicles. The Melways Directory of maps was introduced in 1966, which was a boon to the Sisters, though it was a few years before it went beyond Seville, so a large paper map was used by the Sisters visiting patients in the areas passed Seville. By 2009 there were 598 cars in the fleet and the Sisters travelled 9 million 200,000 kilometres – this is equivalent to 12 trips to the moon and back. In the foreground of this sepia photograph is a side-on view of a four door 1937 style small grey car with a nose shaped bonnet, parked on the road beside the kerb with the headlight facing to the right of the photograph.The bonnet joins onto a straight windscreen which adjoins a slightly curved hood running back along the car. This adjoins a back window which joins onto the sloping rear body of the car with a small protruding boot. Windows are seen above the body work of both facing doors and a smaller sloping window above the body work and rear wheel arch. On the drivers door is a Maltese cross and the words "Melbourne District" written above the Maltese cross and "Nursing Society" below it. In front of this door the body work forms a wheel arch and the headlight is attached between this body work and the bonnet. Rubber tyred wheels with solid hub caps are seen below each wheel arch. On the footpath, behind the bonnet of the car, four Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Trained nurses (Sisters) are standing. They are wearing dark grey coats over their grey uniforms with white collars, and brimmed grey hats with a Maltese cross on the light coloured headband. The Sister on the right has her left hand gripping the handle on top of her oblong nursing case. A metal spiked fence is behind the Sisters, which runs to the left into one of the two square concrete columns which sit either side of a path. A hedge is behind the fence, and behind this part of a building with three arched windows can be seen. Colour slides x 2 of a function at Legacy House in 1962. The slides show the food laid out in the Level 2 function room. It shows that in the 1960s the walls were painted blue and pink. Was a social function for legatees and their wives. There are 11 slides that appear to be the same function. One mentions President Lobb so it was 1962. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Dobie & Son were most famous for their Four Square range of blends and were known for their quality tobacco since 1809. Dobie's was bought out by Godfrey Phillips and by 1956 the old factory, known as "Greenhill Works" on Clark Street in Paisley was shut down and closed. Much later, the 4 Square brand was made in Denmark up until around 2001. The Singapore free Press circa '47 tells us that 4 Square blends started in 1922, also mentioning Dobie's Roll, a thick plug tobacco of exceptional strength.Round, silver coloured tobacco tin, lid and container partially rusted. The tin contains a printed guarantee as well as the wrapping paper the tin sat on."Four Square Curlies" in black lettering on lid, as well as 4 deep pink squares and the words "Fine Cut" on a deep pink background.
