Commercial realities and bushfires caused the Beech Forest community to re-establish itself around the railway station, away from Gardner Hill. This caused John W. Gardner to subdivide his land on the north side of the railway station. One subdivision was created near the Ditchley railway station on the old racecourse site, and another of 25 allotments forming what became Southorn Street. In about 1888 William George Ashman (1871-11/2/1944) began a tailoring business in High Street, Eaglehawk. In 1890 he admitted his brother Arthur Thomas Ashman to the business and they traded as Ashman Brothers. In 1936 the company of Ashman and sons was registered at 265 Hargreaves Street. They specialised in made to measure, hand tailored suits. William married Clara Hunkin (1871-25/11/1944) in 1894. Their sons, John, Eric, Basil and Charles followed into the family business.Woolen fabric trousers, part of Dress Suit. A decorative strip runs down each leg. The waistband can be adjusted on either side by belt/buckle attachments. Trousers fasten with two buttons and there are four buttons at the fly opening at front. There are two deep lined pockets either side and one top pocket at rear on LHS. There is a maker's label stitched to the lining of the Rear pocket which reads "Ashmans, Hargreaves Street, Bendigo 'The Home of Better Suits'". A name written in ink below the maker's label is 'Mr M. Suurpaa, 28-3-1961 7252." The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. (Then) Major Royston on ‘Bill.’ John Robinson Royston was born in South Africa in 1860, served in the Zulu and Boer Wars and in 1916 was sent to Egypt where he became Colonel of the 12th Australian Light Horse. The former mill and weir shown in the photograph were sited on the banks of Jacksons Creek downstream from the town of Sunbury. John Eadie, a Scottish immigrant established the water-driven flour mill on the banks of the creek after he arrived in the colony in 1866. The mill continued operating until the outbreak of World War 1 when the metal wheel and iron roofing were taken and used for the war effort. The hill in the back ground with the trees and buildings was the site of the former Sunbury Asylum. John William (Jack) was the son of William and Mary Sneddon and brother of Alan. William Sneddon was a postman in Surrey Hills for many years. His father James ran an estate agency in Surrey Hills established by his father in the 1880s. William's wife was Mary Sneddon (nee Bird). Jack was born in 1908 in Camberwell. In 1937 his address was 19 Albert Street, Surrey Hills. Mary RASMUSSEN (1940- ) A student of John Gilbert, Mary Rassmussin (Davidson) established her own pottery in 1980. In 1993 she was employed as a Ceramics tearcher at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 2009 Mary Rasmussen celebrated ten years continuous service teaching Ceramics at the Federation Univeristy Arts Academy. In 2015 she curated the 2015 Clunes Ceramics Award. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This programme dates from 1957 when the VBL formed a large brass band made up of the finest brass band musicians from across the state. This band was conducted by the great Harry Shugg of which was probably one of his last engagements before his passing. The musicians came from a number of brass bands including Malvern Municipal, Kingsville & Yarraville, Hawthorn, Preston, Ballarat, Thompson's Foundary, St John's Ambulance, Coburg, the Red Cross and Footscray, This propgramme is significant as it highlights the activities of the Victorian Bands' League when they presented major events. The list of names on the forth page of the program display a who's who of banding at the time. Bandmaster Hugh McMahon is noted for conducing the McMahon's Brass Band (Hillgrove Brass Band) from 1892 - 1900. He was a very famous bandmaster and he, and his brothers, were all extremely competent musicians. In 1897 the McMahon's band competed in Tamworth and won the competition. Their closet rival, the Hillgrove Town Band was placed third. Unfortunately the McMahon's Band was wound up in 1900 when the six McMahon brother followed their brother John to the Western Australia goldfields at Kalgoorlie-Boulder.The photo is remarkable for its condition and completeness. Here we have a photo of 20 bandsmen who have just won a competition dressed in very neat suits. We can also see a distinctive crest on the bass drum and the two trombone players are playing valve trombones. The photo is also significant as it shows one of the two Hillgrove brass bands that were in existence at the time and this was while Hillgrove was a bustling mining town. An interesting article from the Digest of World Reading about Canadian John McCrae and his famous poem "In Flanders Field". It tells of his war service and how the poem was published in Punch on 8 December 1915. He was in the medical service when he succumbed to pneumonia in January 1918. The journal article was sent to the Legacy Co-Ordinating Council who sent it to the archive. The notation H25 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Collected by an earlier archive committee which shows the poem was important to the Legatees. The Teenager, His Family and His Peers was a paper presented to the 1968 Federal Conference of the Legacy Clubs of Australia by Legatee John Hall of Melbourne Legacy (held in Ballarat from 7th to 10th November 1968). By resolution of the Conference it was printed by Legacy Co-ordinating Council for distribution upon their request to Legacy Clubs. It was stored with another paper presented at the 1968 Conference 'The Fundamentals of Legacy' which had the notation H51 in blue pen to show that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy.
