Pumps were used to move water from one place to another. This one was connected by a belt to an engine that would drive it. Electricity is used to drive pumps nowadays.This pump was used in the original Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme.Blue steel and brass water pump bolted onto a wooden base. The stand of the pump is rectangular at one end and round at the other. The rectangular end has a hollow brass cylinder extending up. Inside the brass cylinder is a steel piece with a wide brass cylinder attached at right angles at the top. This is attached at the top to a blue steel 'T' at which the other end has a blue (on the inside) wheel with four curved spokes. When the wheel is turned the steel piece inside the cylinder moves from side to side. On either side of the cylinder, at its base are outlets with screw on fittings. This detailed handwritten documentation was made by the owner Mariner, G W Duncan for use in his role as a member of the engineer crew.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance. The use of sails to propel a ship along its course dates back at least to 3000 BC., to the Egyptians who used sails to move their vessels up and down the Nile. Sailing ships then developed with the Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Vikings and other cultures. Their use was widespread until the 19th century which saw the development of the steam engine, and more recently, the diesel engine. This photograph was taken at what is now the Young’s Creek picnic area which is located on the site of an old sawmill, once owned and operated by L.E. & H. Williams, dating back to the early 1920’s. The mill was eventually sold, dismantled, and the machinery transferred to a sawmill at Cabbage Tree Creek. there are still some items of old sawmill debris. The old steam engine at the edge of the car park is the remains of the mill’s former power plant. Boiler purchased by Malvern city council to supply steam to a stationary vertical engine that drove a stone crusher. Built by George and George Pty. Ltd., Melbourne in 1929, it is an external under-fired return-flue type 18 tube boiler capable of supplying steam at 100 pounds per square inch (600 kPa). This boiler can be occasionally seen in steam at the Museum supplying steam for the operation of stationary engines on display near by. Donated by Malvern City Council in 1969. The wooden pedestrian bridge spanned the rail tracks at Sunbury Railway Station and were replaced with a more modern bridge and ramp when upgrades were done at the station and along the Bendigo line in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The water tank beyond the station building was used to refill the engines with water when steam engines were used. Diesel driven V Line trains now convey commuters from the regional towns along the Bendigo region to Melbourne.The Bendigo Line was the first government rail line to open and it reached Sunbury in 1859.
