Education in the Kiewa Valley began with small schools in many locations enabling the children from the farms to attend their nearby school. As the number of children decreased and transport improved the schools were consolidated into fewer schools located in a centralised position.The history of each school gives an insight into the surrounding population - their numbers, occupations and lifestyle as well as their involvement in the running of the schools eg. AGL took over the operation of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme and constructed the 'Bogong Power Development Project. This involved the construction of a new underground Hydro Electric Power Station on AGL Hydro's Junction Dam regulating pondage near Bogong village in Vctoria's High country. Construction commenced in 2007 and was completed by the end of 2009The Bogong Power Development Project was important to Victoria as hydro power was environmentally friendly. Jump rope for heart is a fundraiser for the National Heart Foundation. School groups and in this case the 1st Tawonga Brownie Unit participated in skipping for a given time to raise money to advance the fight against cardiovascular disease. Falls Creek Snow Resort is on the Bogong High Plains in north east Victoria. It competes with other Australian snow resorts during Winter. Bogong Village was constructed in the early stages of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Employees of the SECV lived there before the town of Mt Beauty was constructed in the late 1940s. By 1997 the village was owned by Southern Hydro who didn't want a 'non-core service' and wished to sell it.The history of Bogong Village is that of a construction town that no longer has a use for its owner. However, it has an emotional significance for people in the area, especially those who worked and lived there. It is also a tourist attraction and includes the Outdoor School - Bogong Campus which was called the Bogong Outdoor Education Centre in 1992. Its history began in 1968 when the Victorian Education Department acquired the camp buildings and four houses from the SECV. The Chick family went fishing and lived on Rockpool Road beside the East Kiewa river from c1934-43. This was before the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The residents of Mt Beauty and the Kiewa Valley swam in the local East and West Kiewa Rivers. The community began planning the building of a swimming pool at Mt Beauty in the early 1960s and held events to raise money for it. This is yet to be achieved (1987), however there is a need for sound, efficient and coordinated management based on the area's natural features, values and uses. Frank Hurley (1885-1962) was an Australian photographer and adventurer. He participated in trips to Antartica and was an official photographer with the Australian forces during both world wars. This book was first published in 1955.Photographs include the Hume Reservoir, Mt Buffalo and the Alpine High Country of Mt Kosciusko. (pages 140-144) All are associated with the type of country at each end of the Kiewa River.
