This postcard was found in the old wool shed in Mannibadar that was owned by Roy Nicol. The property was bought in 1942 from Theophilus Gribble (affectionately known as Topo). It was found when sorting out for sale to current owner James Draffin. The Villa Alba Restoration Fund was established by the Villa Alba Preservation Committee. As part of a fundraising activity, they commissioned Suzie Dickson to photograph six panels in the Upper Hall that had been uncovered to date by conservators. The dado panels extend along the entire upper hall. Many are still to be restored. These images were used to create a series of six large postcards. Postcard with view of bluestone bridge over the Plenty River on what is now Main Street, Greensborough. Built in 1860 by a Scottish stonemason, James Neave McKenzie. Most of the bridge was demolished in 1966 with the remaining bluestone arch preserved till 1983 when it was also demolished. Tim Kennedy built 'La Belle' Guest House circa 1890 - 1920. It became 'The Grange' sometime after 1942. The guest house was on Belgrave/Gembrook Road between IGA and the Shell Petrol Station. This is a scene of Cape Conran, East Gippsland taken by Bairnsdale photographer, Stanley Vogt. It was probably one of a collection of commercial post cards available to tourists or East Gippsland residents to send to friends or relatives. Cameras in the early 20th century were not a common family possession and a postcard was a common souvenir and way of sending a short message.Between 1901 and 1914 a wide range of subjects were recorded by often anonymous artists and photographers and published by everyone from major companies to enthusiastic individuals. As a result, postcards provide a comprehensive resource for anyone interested in how our forebears lived, laughed and loved one hundred years ago. They are very interesting records of places gone, architecture gone and people gone, showing social history such as dress, or early automobiles. RMS Oceana postcard produced by Vienna Studio, 68 Beach Street, Port Melbourne. The Vienna Studio was run by Austrian-born Kallman FEITEL, first in Richmond around 1902 then in Port Melbourne from around 1904. The Oceana was built 1887-88 for P&O at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland and sailed on her maiden voyage from London for Melbourne and Sydney on 19 March 1888. The Oceana collided with the Pisagua when leaving the Port of Tilbury, England and sank on 15 March 1912. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria.
