This small pennant flag would have been produced to celebrate the end of World War 2. Elaborate arrangements were made for Ballarat's Victory Day celebrations at Ballarat on Monday, June 10. Morning church services were followed by a patriotic concert by the combined choirs in front of the city hall at 1.30pm as a prelude to an extensive street pageant and march, featuring lavishly staged tableaux of the Allied nations. This cup was produced by Ken Sadler as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Warrnambool. Ken Sadler was a potter in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for many years (end of 20th century and beginning of 21st century). Warrnambool was founded as a planned town in 1847 to provide port facilities for the produce of squatters who had settled in the area. The town centre was surveyed by William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe of Melbourne and the first land sales were held in Melbourne in July 1847. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Ken Sadler, a well-known Warrnambool potter, made 500 of these cups which are now collectible souvenirs of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This one retained by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society is numbered 189. The 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool was an important event in the city’s history.This is a ceramic cup with a round base and larger rounded body with a round overhanging rim at the top opening. The cup is mottled green with an impressed image of a ship and lettering in white, gold and brown. The Lochiel barn was used as the church for all denominations until 1885 when the parishioners were offered the use of a school room, then used the Mechanics' Hall after it was built in 1887. Mr James Cameron, fostered the developing Church, not only by allowing his barn at Lochiel Park to be used for Church services but also by making a home there for Mr Martin ,First Church of England clergyman stationed at Orbost - 1884-1891 over a period of years, until a small Vicarage was built on the spot where the present church stands. From Mr Cameron’s barn the church migrated to the school building erected in the main street and thence after a short time to the Mechanics Hall, built in 1887. Stephen and his family lived in a wattle and daub hut and worked hard to establish a market garden, poultry and pig farm. The first Methodist Church Services were held at their home. The foundation stone for the Cairns Memorial Church in East Melbourne was laid on 20 November 1882, and construction began in 1883 to a design produced by architects Reed, Henderson and Smart of Melbourne. The church was named in memory of the Rev. Dr. Adam Cairns (1802-1881), late pastor of Chalmers Church on Eastern Hill. Cairns was born in Scotland and ministered there until coming to Melbourne in 1853, where he served as a minister until 1876. The church in East Melbourne was intended to accommodate those who had seceded from Chalmers Church and formed themselves into a new charge. The original design for 'a handsome and commodious edifice in the early English Gothic style capable of seating 750 persons' was described and illustrated in The Australasian Sketcher (January 1883). The interior was to be octagonal in form, with the organ and choir placed in the southern transept. The first portion of the church was opened in November 1883, but was soon found, under the popular ministry of the Rev. G.D. Buchanan, to be too small for the congregation. A new design by the architects Twentyman and Askew was developed, and the first part of the redesigned building was opened on 5 October 1884. The completed building was opened on 17 April 1887. Built from Barrabool Hills stone with Waurn Ponds freestone dressings, it consisted of a nave and transepts, with raking floor, a substantial undercroft and the base of an incomplete tower and spire to the north-west. The church was gutted by fire in August 1988 and was subsequently redeveloped as an apartment complex. The congregation of Cairns Memorial now worships at Richmond-Collingwood, or at St. Michael's Collins Street. "The first Presbyterian Church service was conducted at the Orbost Station Homestead in 1885, during a visit by Sir William Clarke, who was accompanied by two ministers. The organist was resident Grace Jennings Carmichael. Services were later held in Mr J. W. Borland’s shop and the Mechanics Hall. In 1887, the land on which the church now stands was purchased from Mr James Hossack snr, for £50 ($100). The trustees were Mr John, Peter and Hugh Cameron, Mr John A Watt and Mr James Hossack Jnr. Timber from Richardson’s Tabbara Mill was used by builder Mr R. P. Cameron and at a cost of £311.3.7 ($622) the church was opened January 9th 1898." St. Matthew's Church has historic significance as the town's church and physical and social focus for the community. The standard design buildings are good examples and important streetscape elements. The war memorial cross is the area's monument to the 20th century wars and its modest scale in comparison with the granite Eltham and towered Kangaroo Ground memorials illustrates the lack of affluence in the town and surrounding area. The grouping of church, school, store and post office is typical of country villages throughout Victoria. The building was also used for Sunday School, a school and a hall.1 The St Matthew’s Church and hall at the corner of Church Road and Kangaroo Ground-St Andrews Road, were built in the early 20th century in the standard rectangular style of the times. The intact belt of Radiata Pines was common at that time. The war memorial concrete cross is the area’s monument for the 20th century wars. It is much more modest than those in Eltham, and particularly in Kangaroo Ground, demonstrating those townships’ comparative affluence.2 Early settler J Hughes, who donated the land to the Church of England, was the first to be married at St Matthews when he married Rachel Coutie. This is a programme, produced in-house for the Annual Display in 1955 of the Warrnambool Wesley Girls’ Gymnasium Club. It shows that the instructress was Mrs V. Last and the pianist, Mrs B. Utting. There were 29 items in the display with the performers in various age groups. Gymnasium Clubs for both boys and girls, organized by the Warrnambool Methodist Church, were well-established in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It is not known when these clubs ceased to operate but church youth clubs of various kinds continue to operate and gymnastic exercises of some sort would still be one of their activities. The first Wesleyan church service was held in Warrnambool in 1847 and the first chapel was opened in 1851. By the early 1900s the church was known as the Methodist Church and in 1977 after a merger with some other Protestant Churches the church today is known as the Uniting Church with the Warrnambool Uniting Church now located in Koroit Street. This programme is of interest as an example of the type of recreational activity sponsored by churches in the 1950s in Warrnambool. Gymnastic Clubs continue to be a popular activity for youth. Stephen Charman, aged 21years, arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's Emigrants. 1852 he purchased 160 acres for £328 bounded by Charman Rd and Balcome Rd. 'The Spring' was an important water source for the local Aboriginal people and then for the early settlers. Charman's first wife Harriet and their infant child died and in 1850 he married a widow with 5 children, Mary Gettens. Their first home was made of wattle and daub and they had 7 more children. Later a weatherboard cottage was built c 1855 Together they developed a market garden and specialized in marigolds which were sold for medicinal purposes to the Melbourne Chemists - Martin & Pleasance . The first Methodist Church Services were held at Spring Grove and the Charmans donated land in 1857 for the first Chapel, Cemetery and Primary School . Mary died 1870 and Stephen married again and moved to Gippsland where he died aged 85 in 1906 Stephen and Mary Charman were pioneer market gardeners in Moorabbin Shire 1842 and were involved in the development of Church, school and community in the area now called Cheltenham. Charman Road Cheltenham was a boundary of their land.
