Louis Kahan (1905-2002) is best known in Australia for his skill as an artist. As Independent Fashion Curator, Laura Jocic has observed, ‘It is less known though that Kahan had a career in theatre and fashion in Vienna and Paris during the 1920s and 1930s that continued when he came to Australia in 1947. He signed his fashion illustration with the initials 'nac', a phonetic interpretation of his surname spelled backwards. In this illustration on newspaper we can see Kahan playing with the graphic effects of line and text, while communicating the cut and drape of late-1950s fashions.’ Kahn was born in Vienna in 1905 and first travelled to Australia in 1947. He moved to Melbourne in 1950 where he became friends with artist George Bell, writer Alan McCulloch who introduced him to Clem Christensen, editor of the literary journal Meanjin, where many of his portraits of Australian writers were published. His 1962 portrait of the author Patrick White won the Archibald Prize, bringing him national recognition. He also designed sets and costumes for the Elizabeth Theatre Trust (Opera Australia) and the Melbourne Theatre Company. In 1993 his contribution to Australian cultural life was recognised when he was made an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO). He died in Melbourne, at the age of 97 in 2002. Photograph - Cabinet Card, Mrs Merritt
The photographic firm of Morrison & Co., were active at 81 Bourke Street East during the 1880s. Like numerous other photographers in Melbourne, their business must have been severely curtailed by the Depression of the 1890s. The sitter’s identity has been established as a Mrs. Merritt. While we know that she is not the Mrs Merritt who was to be the wife of the future Mayor of Kew, there were two Mrs Merritts who were shopkeepers in High Street, Kew. Mrs Lucy Merritt operated a bootmaker’s shop, and subsequently a “boot warehouse” from 1888 until the 1920s. Miss Laura Merritt established a dressmaker’s shop in High Street in 1910. Her business also lasted until the 1920s, albeit changed to that of a bookseller and stationer. Both portraits are of the same woman.Cabinet Card by Morrison & Co. Charlemont & Co., operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. Silver albumen cabinet card by Charlemont & Co., who operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. In this portrait of Mrs Merritt, she is posed gazing directly at the lens, thus achieving a potentially more intimate relationship with the viewer. All that is revealed however in this supposedly more direct pose is her face. As with an earlier generation, her hair is centrally parted and flattened to accommodate her bonnet, which is surmounted by feathers. The detail in her coat-dress is sharply revealed by new photographic processes that allowed firms like Charlemont & Co., to capture greater light and shade, as well as the detail of fabrics. The entire garment is beaded with what is probably Parisian jet. The beading is arranged in a ‘paisley’ design. The paisley pattern was to become ubiquitous in the 19th century as a design on everything from carpets, to shawls, to clothing.Mrs Merrittcharlemont & co., mrs merritt -

Photograph, Subdivision sale of Black's Mont Albert farm in 1924, 1924
Photo was taken in 1924 when the land was subdivided. Black's dairy farm occupied the area just east of Hamilton Street to near Elgar Road. It was subdivided into 88 house allotments along Churchill Street, Bruce Street, Black Street, Proudfoot Street and View Street. The solicitors were Proudfoot & Horton, 360 Collins Street; estate agents were Duncan & Weller, 29 Queen Street. The real estate subdivision notice on the SLV website states that Neil Black had been the owner for 50 years. To date no trace of a Neil Black has been found. Box Hill rate books simply give BLACK as the owner in 1877 (no first name); the entry for 1878-1884 states Robert Black. The 1909 electoral roll has entries for Mont Albert Road for Robert Black (farmer), Thomas Black (carter) & Elizabeth Black (HD). The 1912 electoral roll has entries for Mont Albert Road for Robert Black (farmer), Thomas Black (labourer), John Arthur Black (carter) & Elizabeth Black (HD). Robert Black died in 1920 (b. 1836) and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (CE-*-0057). His parents were John and Margaret Black. He married Lizzie Foley in 1878. She was the daughter of Margaret & John Foley, born in 1859. She died in 1902 aged 43 years and is buried in the same grave, although the cemetery records record her age as 0 years (presumably as no age or date of birth were given at the time of burial). Children: 1. James Hughbert (1880-1954) 2. John Arthur (1881-1959) 3. Alice (1882-1883) - died aged 6 months 4. Laura Elizabeth (1883-1951) 5. Thomas (1885-1965) 6. Isabella (1887-1963) 7. Eleanor (1889-1963) 8. Ada Maud (1890-1968) 9. Robert (1892-1930). BDM Victoria states places of birth as Box Hill, Surrey Hills or Mont Albert. Many of the family are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. None of the girls appear to have married. Communication from a descendant of John Arthur Black gives the following: "John Arthur Black, son of Robert & Lizzie Foley, married Gladys Anne Layton had 4 children, Robert, Elenore, Marion (Follett) & Annie; they had farm on Stud Road, Dandenong where they milked 30 cows that he retired to after being a earth-moving contractor with draft horses and dug irrigation ditches around Shepparton." This is important as documentation of the area's transformation from farming land to residential land use.Black and white photo of a large 3-poled tent in an area of flat land with eucalypts in the background. Photograph, Surrey Hills Reservoir No 1
Copied by Ken Hall from an early postcard. This is Surrey Hills Reservoir No 1 on the corner of Tower Street built in c1892 at a cost of £12,000 to supply higher sections of the area. The builders were Jack and Bob Laudehr, partners in a wood yard in St. Kilda (Vic). They began by delivering firewood but extended to contract work involving timber. Another of their projects was to lay cable tram tracks commencing in Acland Street St. Kilda and running along The Esplanade. The reservoir in Canterbury Road was a large concrete structure built before the introduction of reinforcements. The excavated material was banked against the sides and pine trees were planted in it to add strength to the embankment. They were paid £2,000 for their work. Construction of Surrey Hills Number 2 Reservoir was completed in 1913 and the accompanying tower was built in 1929. It is assumed that the Miss Hill as the source of the donation (via Bill Dempsey) was Ivy Annie Hill (1902-1984). She was the only female child of William Valentine Dempsey to not marry. Bill Dempsey's mother was Laura Constance 'Birdie' Hill (1900-1968) who married Albert Dempsey.A sepia photograph within a post card of a reservoir on Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. In the background to the left you can see the top halves of two houses and the tops of some trees. The photo takes up only the central section of the postcard.Below the photo on the front of the postcard on blue biro "Reservor [sic] Canterbury Rd / Surrey Hills." On the rear in grey lead pencil in Jocelyn Hall's handwriting: "Donor W Dempsey ------------- Keep / (nephew) / [arrow pointing down] / From Miss Hill / 10 Pembroke St SH / This house can be / seen in front of / No 12 which has / tower"1890, water supply, mmbw, edward d dyer (mr), 10 pembroke street, 12 pembroke street, surrey hills, ivy annie hill (miss), william valentine hill (mr), canterbury road, tower street, water supply structures and establishments, dams and reservoirs, jack laudehr (mr), bob laudehr (mr) -

Photograph, Norman Carter, Part of Black's dairy farm in Mont Albert in the 1920s, 1920s
Photo is likely to have been taken pre-1924 when the land was subdivided. Donor information is that this was taken from a home in Churchill Street, Mont Albert; it would be looking south towards Mont Albert Road. She died in 1902 aged 43 years and is probably buried in the same grave, although the cemetery records record her age as 0 years. Communication from a descendant of John Arthur Black gives the following: "John Arthur Black, son of Robert & Lizzie Foley, married Gladys Anne Layton had 4 children, Robert, Elenore, Marion (Follett) & Annie; they had farm on Stud Road, Dandenong where they milked 30 cows that he retired to after being a earth-moving contractor with draft horses and dug irrigation ditches around Shepparton." This is important as documentation of the area's early farming land use.Black and white photo of a paddock with cows and sheep grazing.
