These boots belonged to Captain Charlie Rogers of the Australian Army who wore these and ceremonial regalia when he was part of the Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and an Army identity. He built a house in Birdwood Avenue, Warrnambool, in 1935 and was a long-serving Warrnambool Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the boots worn by Army Lighthorse personnel in the 1930s. The mechanism for keeping the boots in good condition is of some technological interest. They are also of interest because they belonged to a well-known 20th century Warrnambool person. These are two knee-high brown leather boots with brown laces. The boots are slightly scuffed. Inside the boots are two pieces of red-striped canvas. The boots have wooden inserts to support the boots in storage. These wooden inserts, all varnished, are in four pieces - a solid foot shape to fit in the foot of the boots, two pieces shaped to fit the calf of the leg padded with green felt, one with slight indents at the top and the bottom and the other with a decided groove and the centre piece that has a hole cut out to fit the shape of the other two. This last piece has a wooden handle with a metal attachment. There is only one handle as it can be screwed out and fitted to either wooden insert. The centenary of Presbyterianism ...This is a program for the Order of Service for the Induction of the Rev Rhys Miller to St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool in 1946. St. John’s Church was officially opened in 1875, burnt down in 1920 and rebuilt around the skeleton structure remaining on the same site. The Rev. Rhys Miller had been a R.A.A.F. Chaplain during World War Two before coming to Warrnambool in 1946. He was absent from Warrnambool for most of that first year undertaking post-graduate studies in Scotland. The Rev. Miller was the Minister at St. John’s Church until 1952 when he transferred to a Gardenvale church in Melbourne. The centenary of Presbyterianism in Warrnambool took place in 1949 and Rev. Miller wrote the booklet, ‘100 Years of Worship and Work’. In 1984 he published his autobiography, ‘Calling and Recalling’. This program is of interest because the Rev. Rhys Miller, as a Minister of St. John’s Presbyterian Church on Warrnambool, was a significant person in Warrnambool’s history. This is a program, the Order of Service for the Induction of the Rev. Rhys Miller to St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Warrnambool in 1946. It is a small sheet of paper folded in two to make four pages. The printed material is black on white. This book belonged to Charles Rogers. Captain Charles Rogers was an Australian Army officer in the 4th Lighthorse Regiment. He was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was well-known as a Warrnambool resident in the 1930s, 40s and 50s and was often seen on horseback leading parade and celebrations in the city. He as a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. He died in 1961. This book is of interest, firstly as an example of a military handbook for cavalry officers and secondly because it belonged to Captain Charles Rogers, an army officer (Lighthorse regiment) who was a well-known resident of Warrnambool in the early to mid 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 198 pages. It has a yellow cover with black printing on the spine. Most of the pages are white, with several pink pages at the beginning and the end. This is a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ celebration in Warrnambool in 1934. There had been a large-scale ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1930, perhaps prompted by the growing interest in the history of the town ( this was evidenced in many country towns in Victoria at the time) and the need to gather together the remaining older local people as those regarded as pioneers of the district were fast dying out. In 1934 the State of Victoria was celebrating the centenary of the first permanent white settlement at Portland and many other places besides Melbourne took this opportunity to have a reunion of past and present citizens. Also Warrnambool had at the time two men very interested in the history of the settlement – Henri Worland and Patrick O’Grady and the first Warrnambool Historical Society was established the following year with Worland and O’Grady prominent in its establishment and Martin Carter on the first committee as well. Martin Carter, whose name appears on this envelope was the organizer of the 1934 reunion. The Carter family had long been established in Warrnambool as saddlers and Martin Carter was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1917 to 1925 and Mayor during three of those years. No information is available on the ‘Miss Adams ‘ in the address but ‘ R. F. Kennedy & Co.’ refers to the well-known pharmacy business in Timor Street Warrnambool.This envelope is of interest as a souvenir of a ‘Back To’ in Warrnambool in 1934. This is a small envelope with most of the back flap missing. The inside of the envelope has a blue lining. The envelope has a franked green Australian stamp and a Warrnambool Post Office stamp. A handwritten address is on the right side of the envelope. On the left side is a printed poster/advertisement in blue, black and grey colouring. This ceremonial regalia belonged to Captain Charles Rogers of the Australian Army (Light Horse Regiment). He wore this regalia when he was part of the mounted Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s Centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Charles Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and Army identity and he and his horse frequently led parades and celebrations in the city. He was a long-serving Warrnambool Agricultural Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the regalia worn by Australian military personnel in the 1930s. They are also good mementos of Charles Rogers, a notable personality in Warrnambool in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.1 This is a piece of ceremonial regalia worn over the shoulder and called an aigullette. It has a plaited silver-coloured cord ending in silver metal tagged points. The metal points or stakes are highly decorated. The cords also have an accompanying smaller silver-coloured cord and another attachment of cord with an end of interwoven material in the shape of an elongated pear or acorn. The item is a little tarnished. .2 These are epaulettes worn on the shoulder. One is attached to the aigullette and the other is detached. The belt has a cloth-covered metal clasp. There are two tassels hanging from the clasp area with beige and maroon threads with tops covered in silver mesh. This coin was issued to commemorate the centenary of Federation in Australia in 2001. The six Australian States were federated into the Commonwealth of Australia in January 1901 after several years of campaigning and planning. The first Prime Minister was Edmund Barton and the first Federal Parliament was held in Melbourne and continued to be held in Melbourne until the establishment of the Australian capital at Canberra in 1927. In 2001 ceremonies and celebrations were held all over Australia to commemorate the centenary of Federation. The colonies of Australia were federated into the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 The first parliament was held in Melbourne in May, 1901. In the newly established capital of Australia, Canberra, the federal parliament sat in 1927. This of minor interest as a memento of the centenary of Australian Federation.This is a gold coloured metal stylised map of Australia and a star . This is a photograph of an engraving showing the first train arriving at the Echuca Wharf on 25/09/1865. The photograph appeared in the Illustrated Australian News on 25/09/1865. It also appeared in Susan Preiestly's book, 'Echuca; A centenary history' in 1965 on page 46.. The picture is of interest because it shows the size of the wharf in 1865. It also shows all the crowds to welcome the first train. It also shows the buildings along Murray Esplanade. In the far left the Steam Packet Hotel, Shackell's Bond Store and the St George's Hall, next the The Bridge Hotel. Five large steam ships are visible, all carrying crowds of people. In the foreground is the S.S Melbourne. Two rowing boats are in the left foreground.This engraving is significant because it shows the welcoming of the first train onto the wharf. The photograph shows the size of the wharf in 1865, as well as the street scape and the vessels on the water at the wharf. There is also some activity at Evan's sawmill. There are crowds on the wharf, and lining Murray Esplanade. It also shows that most of the crowd are males, which helped describe the role that women played in public life in the 1880's. This is a picture of the railway station building which was built in c. 1865. The railway line was built from Bendigo to Echuca in 1864. The left wing of the present building has an additional floor to the original building. Refer page 62 of Susan Priestley's book. "Echuca; A Centenary History." The Building of the Echuca Railway station was very significant to life in Echuca. It made travel easier for residents, but also it helped develop Echuca as the largest inland port in the world. Traders brought wool and wheat down the Murray-Darling river basin to Echuca where it could then be sent by rail to Melbourne for shipping overseas, or to other ports around Australia.
