Reverend James Noble MacKenzie was born on 08/01/1865 on the Isle of Ewe and died on 02/07/2956. He arrived in Victoria in 1894. He served in Santo and Korea. He is notable for his work among lepers. St John's Presbyterian was built in 1853. It was used for worship services 1853 - 1927. It was subsequently used by church organisations for a further 25 years. Demolished in 1953. St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church Stawell. Now United Church. This landmark of Stawell was opened on 11th April 1869. The tower and spire, overall height of 148 feet, cost 1352 pounds and was paid for by an early mine owner. In March 1869, a month before the Church was opened, the local paper reported that a large red flag on the top of the Presbyterian Spire meant that the last brick had been laid and the massive gilt ball and cross had been placed in position. The Church has some fine stained-glass windows. Two identical side views of a church with a tall steeple. These photos were taken from the original Post Cards in Album 13, p.41. The epergne was presented to Amelia Jane Donaldson (wife of Dr J.B. Donaldson Snr) "as a mark of esteem" by friends at the Presbyterian Church in 1907. Dr James Blair Donaldson had a medical practice in Linton from about 1889 until 1920, when his son, also named James Blair Donaldson, took it over.Silver-plate epergne for holding flowers. Epergne has a round base, and six branches radiating from a central stem. Branches each have a funnel-shaped small swirled-glass insert for holding flowers, while central stem has a matching, but larger glass vase insert.Engraved on base of epergne: "Presented to Mrs. J.B. Donaldson by her friends of the Presbyterian Church, Linton, as a mark of esteem. 26-4.07". The Presbyterian Church was built in 1871 by local contractor and grazier James Patterson of Nardoo Park, Woosang. The Presbyterian and Methodist Churches formed combined Parish in 1969. D 1871 in black are on the front of the church. There is also a bell tower, a small gothic arched window and a small round leadlight window on the front wall. The original Presbyterian church was in Rowan Street but the congregation outgrew it. In 1897 a new plot was purchased in Forest Street and a new church designed by Vahland and son was designed and then built by Fairbanks and Wilson. It was of a gothic design with incandescent gasburners for lighting. It was designed to comfortably seat 400 people and was opened 4/7/1897.Eight pages booklet. The booklet is titled "St John's Presbyterian Church Bendigo, Positive stewardship, 1957". On the cover a black and white photograph of the inside of the church showing the apse. Omn the back the name of the Canvass Committee and the Stewardship Prayer. The first page of the booklet records a mesage from the minister J.W. Extracts from The Church on the Hill: Presbyterianism in Kew 1874-1974 by John A. O’Neill (Mullaya, Canterbury (Vic), 1974, pp.58-60. “An outstanding family which gave devoted service to the Church was the Campbell family of which James Maitland was the “head”. He died at “Ramornie” on the afternoon of Monday 15 December 1930. … “James Maitland Campbell was born in 1847 in Melrose, Scotland, where his father, the Rev. A. J. Campbell D.D., was the Minister of the Kirk. The Rev. Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Campbell, with their family, came to Australia in 1861 and settled in St. George’s Church, Geelong, where he was the first Minister. James Maitland, after completing his secondary education at Geelong College, entered the Melbourne University where he graduated Master of Arts and Master of Laws, and eventually became a partner in the legal firm of Davies and Campbell. When he first came to Melbourne Mr Campbell attended Chalmers Church, East Melbourne, and married Miss Annie Harper, daughter of Robert Harper, a merchant and a sister of Professor Andrew Harper. In March 1875 the young couple settled in Pakington Street, Kew. After the induction of the Rev. Maxwell and the formation of a Board of Management, Mr. Campbell was elected its first Secretary. David Beath, James Maitland Campbell and Duncan Robert McGregor were the first Trustees of our Church. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell joined the Church Choir, and Mr. Campbell became Choir Leader. Members of their family, Bessie, Mary, Nellie and Lewis also sang in the Choir. Mary became a famed teacher of singing in Melbourne. She taught singing to members of the Choir, and gave lessons in voice production to students for the Ministry. In 1879 Mr. Campbell became Superintendent of the Sabbath School, a position he occupied for 27 years. In 1887 he was elected an Elder, and the Session Clerk for 37 years. In 1924 Mr. Campbell compiled a very complete Jubilee History of the Kew Presbyterian Church. Mr. J. M. Campbell saw our existing Church and the Old Manse erected, the Villa purchased, and, with the help of the Kew Congregation, the Charges of West Hawthorn, East Kew and Deepdene established. In the General Assembly of Australia and the General Assembly of Victoria he occupied the important position of Law Agent, and was a member of numerous Church Committees and Councils. … At the Annual Congregational Meeting on Wednesday 28 October 1931, it was decided to erect a tablet in the Church to the memory of the late Mr. J. M. Campbell to record his service to the Church. The tablet was unveiled at the morning service on 13 December by Mr. Legge. The Preacher was Rev. J. Barnaby.”James Maitland Campbell (1847-1930) the owner of “Ramornie” in Pakington Street was an important contributor to the community of Kew in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A Councillor of the Borough of Kew, he was to be elected Mayor on three occasions: 1889-90, 1890-91 and 1892-93. In addition to his political roles, he was the first Secretary of the Kew Presbyterian Church, being actively involved in the life of the Church until his death in 1930. The Kew Historical Society has a small collection of items once belonging to the Campbell family, including a series of invitations issued to Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Campbell for the festivities organised to commemorate the opening of the first Australian Parliament in Melbourne in 1901. Memorial Tablet to James Maitland Campbell (1847-1930) that was originally erected in the Kew Presbyterian Church in Cotham Road. The first Presbyterian Church service was conducted at the Orbost Station Homestead in 1885, during a visit by Sir William Clarke, who was accompanied by two ministers. The organist was resident Grace Jennings Carmichael. Services were later held in Mr J. W. Borland’s shop and the Mechanics Hall. In 1887 the land on which the church now stands was purchased from Mr James Hossack snr, for £50 ($100). The trustees were Mr John, Peter and Hugh Cameron, Mr John A Watt and Mr James Hossack Jnr. Timber from Richardson’s Tabbara Mill was used by builder Mr R. P Cameron and at a cost of £ 311.3.7 ($622) the church was opened January 9th 1898. This item is from the estate of Elsie Cooke. Elsie Cooke was a librarian in Orbost for many years. She was the daughter of John Cooke early Brodribb settler. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. The two etchings of Scots Presbyterian Church formerly in Adelaide Street Ringwood which was knocked down to make way for the development of Eastlands Shopping centre in the 1960s. The Pulpit and Window were moved to the Uniting Church in Station Street, Ringwood. The etchings were done by D.M.
