Coaster showing 'Pannam's Store 1900' is historically incorrect as Pannam did not come to Vermont until c1934. It appears that it was known as 'Vermont Store' in 1900.Boxed set of six square coasters with rounded edges. Gilded alloy surface etched with black line graphics featuring scenes of early of the former municipality of Nunawading. Each coaster is backed with blue foam/felt. Photograph: Flowers sent to Norm Borchers by the Australian Labor Party. The occasion for sending these flowers is not known. The flowers are positioned on a table next to an ornate lamp. Norm Borchers passed away in 2008. Borchers was a Club President of the Sebastopol Lions Club (1975-76). He worked for the railways as an engineering employee and was long-term trade unionist (Amalgamated Engineering Union and the Australian Railways Union) and ALP member; he lived and worked in the Ballarat area. Norm was active in workplace disputes during the ALP split in 1955. Photos of the 50th Anniversary Dinner on 6 October 1973 held at Chaucers during the Legacy Conference. (date to be confirmed) 00452.1 shows 6 men with Legacy Torches lined up along the front of the high table. A caption found when the photo was published elsewhere says 'On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Annual Conference of Legacy Clubs of Australia, held in Melbourne in October 1973, the Chairman of the Legacy Co-ordinating Council, Legatee George Cowan, presented an illuminated Torch emblem to the President of the capital city Legacy Club of each of the six States. Members of Legacy are determined that the Torch shall continue to burn brightly throughout Legacy's second half century of service to dependants of deceased ex-servicemen.' Other photos are of table groups or room shots. Chaucers was a reception and conference centre in Canterbury, Melbourne, before it was sold in 1999 after operating 28 years (Telegraph news article from web). While the first train arrived at Beech Forest on 17 February, 1902, as a special train for a race meeting at Beech Forest Turf Club, two special trains ran for the official opening of the railway by the State Governor, Sir George Sydenham Clarke, KCMG, R.E., F.R.S., that took place on 27 February, 1902. After seeing round the area the guests attended a celebration of the opening at a banquet at Beech Forest. The menu included four impressive courses, coffee and cognac, and included a number of toasts - The King, the Governor, the Minister and the Parliament of the State, Success to the Beech Forest Railway, the Colac Shire Council and the Railway Trust, and the Railway Department, a total of 19 people speaking. The official guests then returned to Colac.B/W. Opening banquet for the Colac-Beech Forest railway line in 1902. The State Governor, Sir George Sydenham Clarke, KCMG, the Premier of Victoria, Hon. Functional object - Infant Welfare Centre Table
The table was used in the Charing Cross Infant Welfare Centre. The Maternal and Child Health Service (Infant Welfare) began in Victoria in 1917 when, in response to high levels of infant morbidity and mortality, the first voluntary Infant Welfare Centres began to emerge. The first centres were established in Richmond and Carlton and received a Council subsidy.A table with an open box fixed to the top it 100 centimetres long 55 centimetres wide with 14 centimetre sides. The table was used to measure the length of babies to record growth. One end is shaped the fit a baby's head when it is lying on the table, the other end slides to the baby's feet. The Victorian Municipal Directory provided annual details, and later bi-annual details, of all councils. Published by Arnall & Jackson (Printers and Stationers), copies were published in 'cloth' for sixteen shillings and 'half roan' for eighteen shillings. This copy was owned by Cr C.S.Parry. Elected to the Kew City Council as a representative of North Ward, Cr Parry was elevated to the position of Mayor in 1931. Elected to the Kew City Council as a representative of North Ward, Cr Parry was elevated to the position of Mayor in 1931.
