The Sunbury Post Office with a residence pictured in the image was the first official post office building in the town. It opened on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets in 1892. Prior to that time postal services were conducted in an office at Sunbury Railway Station. This Catholic Church was built between 1872 and 1874. It was the first permanent Catholic Church building in Bacchus Marsh. Catholics had lived in the Bacchus Marsh area since the early 1840s and in this early period religious services had been conducted in a number of different buildings including peoples' homes. This Church still stands and continues to be the main place of worship for Catholics in the Bacchus Marsh area. The students in the photo were attending Sunbury Common School No. 1002 which was first permanent government school building to be erected in 1871 in the town on the corner of Macedon and Stawell Streets with an enrolment of 32 students. Photographs taken of the first computer of Ballarat School of Mines / Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education Mount Helen Campus. This mainframe computer was purchased in 1969 for $116,000 and set up in the First Stage Engineering building (later F Building). It was the first operational teaching facility on the new campus. The initial computer centre staff were Arch McKinnon ad Manager and Judy Wilson as Key Punch Operator.. In 1972 Brian Dixon operated this computer for a night or two a week. He obtained an operators certificate as part of a Maths course at Ballarat College of Advanced Education, and lecturer Arch McKinnon offered Brian Dixon a night job.Four photographs relating to the ICL1911A computer. This photograph taken between 1883-1888, shows the Steam Packet Inn, which was at the end of Stanley Street in Warrnambool, close to the Breakwater and Port of Warrnambool. It was renamed later as the Lady Bay Hotel. THE STEAM PACKET INN The Steam Packet Inn was originally located at the end of the first jetty that ran out into Lady Bay. It was purchased by Manifold and Bostock in 1854 with the first building being a private BOND STORE. An old horse-drawn tramway went past the Bond Store and out onto the Jetty, providing a method of transporting goods. The Bond Store was converted in 1863 into a hotel named the Western Steam Packet and then called the STEAM PACKET HOTEL or INN, a stone building. The Steam Packet Inn building was owned by E.D. Evans of the firm of Evans and Gleeson, livery stables. The Steam Packet Inn’s licensee between 1883-1888 was B.C. Jewell. In 1889 the building was reconstructed and a second storey added. At this time (1889-1890) the name was changed to the BAY VIEW HOTEL. The hotel was extensively damaged by the first of the two earthquakes in Warrnambool in 1903. The hotel was renamed LADY BAY in 1954 and altered and enlarged. It then occupied the site of two former hotels, the Bayview and the Prince of Wales. When the Lady Bay Hotel was demolished a few years ago to make way for the Lady Bay Apartments the original walls of the old Steam Packet Hotel were still clearly visible inside the main bar area. Alfred Patrick Armstrong was born in England in 1825 and was employed under the renowned Isambard Kingdom Brunel as a civil engineer during the construction of the Great Western Railway and the South Wales Railway. He came to Melbourne in 1852 and purchased property in Eltham. He became a mining surveyor and was Inspector of Mines and the Mining Registrar for the St Andrews Division of the Castlemaine Mining District. In 1855, he chaired a meeting calling for a bridge to be erected across the Yarra River between Eltham and Temple Stow. He was registered as an innkeeper in 1858, was a recognised collector of the £110 raised for the building of the first building of State School No. 209 (Eltham Primary) and was a Trustee for the Church of England site on the Eltham Cemetery Trust in 1860. He was elected to the Eltham District Road Board (forerunner of Eltham Shire Council) from 1867 to 1871 and then served as an Eltham Shire Councillor from 1871 to 1878 (including Shire President in 1873). Margaret Armstrong to whom he was married in 1854 at St Pauls Church, Melbourne, died on the 27th March 1887. Alfred died in 1893, having been in ill health for some time, and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with his wife Margaret. The monument features a tall pillar capped with a draped urn: a symbol of death. Stuart Hats commenced manufacturing hats in about 1948 and closed their factory in Orbost around 1953 probably because of the high transport costs. The company's head factory was in Melbourne. The hats made in Orbost were sold all over Australia as well as in Melbourne at Myers and David Jones. Orme Andrews Ladies' Wear was the only store in Orbost to stock the locally produced Stuart Hats. The building became first a Dry Cleaners and then a private home.Stuart Hats was a significant manufacturing business in Orbost in the 1950's employing nearly 20 local people.A woven straw hat with a wide brim. This catalogue was written by Joan Luxemburg for the Art Gallery of Ballarat Exhibition of James Meek works (13th June to 9th August 2015). It is not intended as a full biography of James Meek and concentrates on his decorative works. Joan Luxemburg has spent many years researching the life and works of James Meek and the exhibition and catalogue are part of a PhD project at Federation University. A biography of James Meek by Joan Luxemburg is due for publication in 2016. English-born James Meek, a fisherman, cannery operator, poet, writer, explorer in the Otway district, librarian, calligrapher and accountant, was one of the first settlers in Ballarat, building the first house and establishing a cordial and sly grog business. After some time in Melbourne he came to the Warrnambool area, becoming an early settler in the Peterborough area and establishing a cannery there. In Warrnambool he set up a commercial fishing company which failed, organized an Otways exploration trip looking for gold and established a reputation for producing fine calligraphy works. He was in New Zealand from 1874 to 1890 and died in Warrnambool in 1899. This catalogue is important because it records the decorative works of James Meek, an important early settler in Warrnambool and district. Meek was well-known in Warrnambool in the 1850s and 60s as a commercial fisherman, an Otways explorer, a writer and lecturer and a calligrapher. One of his daughters married Peter Dallimore, a fellmonger at Lake Gillear and the Dallimore family is also prominent in our history. Gordon Hall was the first public building in Buchan. European settlement first entered the area in October 1838 and Buchan station was established in January 1839. Free selection after 1868, and a township was proclaimed in 1873 taking its name from the station. The Grand ball was held on race night, Monday 28th December 1896 in the Gordon Hall at Buchan. From the estate of Elsie Cooke. Elsie Cooke was a librarian in Orbost for many years. She was the daughter of John Cooke early Brodribb settler. Elsie Cooke lived all her life in Gippsland,. She was born at Brodribb in 1895 and died in 1970, Elsie Cooke lived at Bruthen for a short time and, in 1937, moved to live with her aunt, Miss Jean Munro. Miss Cooke was Librarian at the Mechanics Institute for many years. Kindness and consideration for other were Miss Cooke’s attributes and she endeared herself to all who knew her. She was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church and a stalwart of the Ladies’ Guild, an energetic worker for the Municipal Auxiliary and a member of the Red Cross. (ref. Taken in Beechworth 1859, this photograph depicts the south side of Ford street looking towards the Methodist Church. The Methodist Church was built in 1857, and was the first permanent church building on the Ovens goldfields. It was one of the first permanent churches built on the Victorian goldfields, and the first on the Ovens goldfield. It demonstrates the rapid development which occurred in the goldfield towns following the discovery of gold in the early 1850s. It reflects the importance of Methodism in Victoria at this time, and the early activities of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in taking their religious message to the gold miners. The Torquay Life Saving Club was formed in 1922. Members operated from a large bathing box on the Torquay front beach. Eventually at a meeting at the Palace Hotel in January 1946, it was resolved to form the Torquay Surf Club but the name was changed to Torquay Surf Lifesaving Club on 20 February 1946. Building of first clubhouse was completed in 1946. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was established in September 1968. On its establishment, the institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College which had commenced diploma teaching in 1929. Initially, all the Institute's teaching was conducted in the diploma building of the Yallourn Technical College. In 1972 the Institute transferred part of its operations to the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surrounds near the township of Churchill south of Morwell. The Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education was opened on 20 November 1976. These Christ Church Warrnambool badges were made about the mid 20th century and were either given to church members assisting with the fair held in the church buildings and grounds in the latter part of the year or were sold to community members to raise funds for the church. The Anglican community in Warrnambool first met in a building in Liebig Street in the early 1850s and in 1856 Christ Church in Henna Street was opened with additions in the 1860s and the tower being erected in 1882. Today Christ Church in Warrnambool still holds an annual fair in late spring.These badges are of interest as souvenirs of the fairs held at Christ Church, Warrnambool about the middle of the 20th century..1 A metal badge with blue edging, an image in blue of Christ Church and yellow printing. Buninyong had no railway station so residents would travel to Yendon to catch the train. The Yendon Railway Station building was demolished soon after this photograph was taken. The bluestone was purchased by John Vernon, and was used to construct retaining walls in a garden enclosure between the first two buildings at the new Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education campus at Mt Helen. This is now known as the courtyard between building 'F' and building 'G' at the University of Ballarat mt Helen Campus. The following article was published in the Ballarat Courier on 06 December 1968. 'Yendon Station to be demolished - The old bluestone railway station at Yendon is to be demolished. C.A.D. Fisken told Buninyong Shire Council of the proposal at its meeting yesterday. Fortunately, he said, the beautiful stonework would not be lost. It would be used and incorporated in the new School of Mines building at Mt Helen. the retention of the century-old building was the subject of representations by Council to the Railways following the closure of the station for goods traffic 'some time ago'. The building had also been noted by the National Trust as one of special interest. The Railways Department advised the meeting that an inspection had been made at the Yendon level crossing, but no recommendation could be made at present for installation of flashing light signals.'Bluestone building with dressed bluestone door and window jambs and chimney. The building is the former Yendon Railway Station (now demolished) on the Ballarat -Geelong main line (the original Melbourne to Ballarat mainline). Federation University Australia’s Student Commons Area at the Mt Helen Campus was the first FedUni building to be officially given an Aboriginal name, Gnarrwirring Karung. Meaning Learning Place in the local Wadawurrung language, the re-named centre (pronounced Narrowing Ker Ung) will provide recognition of the area’s cultural heritage and increase the vibrancy, diversity and rich culture throughout the campus. The re-naming ceremony was held at the Gnarrwirring Karung Student Commons Area, S Building, Mt Helen Campus. “The choice of name follows an extensive process of seeking suggestions from the student body, the University’s Aboriginal Education Centre and local Aboriginal custodians,” Geoff Lord, Chairman of the University’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Committee, said. “The official naming meets many elements recognised within the FedUni RAP such as enhancing community, embedding culture, providing opportunity and, most importantly, respect. “The ceremony is a fine example of putting Aboriginal culture at the centre of our daily lives.” Jasmine Graham, Manager of the Aboriginal Education Centre, said the re-naming was a milestone for the local Aboriginal community. “The University is committed to greater recognition of Aboriginal heritage and culture throughout all of its campuses,” Ms Graham said. “Gnarrwirring Karung will be an impressive landmark throughout the Mt Helen Campus and a welcoming learning place.” A number of photographs taken at the naming of a Federation University space in the Mt Helen Campus 'S' Building. Meaning Learning Place in the local Wadawurrung language, the re-named centre (pronounced Narrowing Ker Ung) will provide recognition of the area’s cultural heritage and increase the vibrancy, diversity and rich culture throughout the campus. The re-naming ceremony was held at the Gnarrwirring Karung Student Commons Area, S Building, Mt Helen Campus. “The choice of name follows an extensive process of seeking suggestions from the student body, the University’s Aboriginal Education Centre and local Aboriginal custodians,” Geoff Lord, Chairman of the University’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Committee, said. “The official naming meets many elements recognised within the FedUni RAP such as enhancing community, embedding culture, providing opportunity and, most importantly, respect. “The ceremony is a fine example of putting Aboriginal culture at the centre of our daily lives.” Jasmine Graham, Manager of the Aboriginal Education Centre, said the re-naming was a milestone for the local Aboriginal community. “The University is committed to greater recognition of Aboriginal heritage and culture throughout all of its campuses,” Ms Graham said. “Gnarrwirring Karung will be an impressive landmark throughout the Mt Helen Campus and a welcoming learning place.” A number of photographs taken at the naming of a Federation University space in the Mt Helen Campus 'S' Building. This was the first building in what is now Eltham’s present shopping town centre. Haley previously ran the General Store and Bakery on the corner of Main Road and York Street until his lease expired and the premises were bought by Mrs Sarah Burgoyne in 1902. Haley sold the store to Hannah Lloyd in 1917 who operated it until 1920. It then went through a succession of owners until Eric Staff purchased it in 1939. Ray Staff succeeded his father in 1954 and eventually demolished the store in 1965 opening up a new supermarket, the Eltham Big Star Food Centre. That building still stands at 929 Main Road and is the Nongkhai Thai Restaurant. On the eastern (right) side of Main Street is Haley’s Paddock, which was used on occasions for community picnics. Capable of holding 10,000 people, with ample shade and hilly surroundings it was an ideal place for any community gathering such as the State Schools’ Picnic in 1904. It was not until the early 1920s that stores started to appear between Luck and Dudley Streets. John Henry Clark was the youngest of three boys born to William Henry Clark (1823-1877) and Maria White (1843-1914). He and his brothers, William Charles Clark (1872-1945), Clement Kent Clark (1874-1912) operated a photography business (Clark Bros.) from 25 Thomas Street, Windsor near Prahran during the period c.1894 to 1914. Following death of Clement in September 1912 and their mother in 1914, the Clark Bros business appears to have dissolved, the premises demolished, and a new house was under construction in 1915. John set up business independently in 1914 operating out of 29 Moor Street, Fitzroy where he is registered in the 1914 and 1915 Electoral Rolls. By 1916 John had relocated to Eltham where he continued his practice as a photographer and took many of the early images around the district of Little Eltham. Around 1930 John changed professions and opened a small cobbler's shop in 1931 near the pond opposite Dalton Street adjacent to the Jarrold family cottage. He never married and continued his profession as a bootmaker from this little shop, maintaining a close relationship with Mrs Jarrold for the rest of their lives. The Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works was established in 1891 to oversee the introduction of a sewerage and water reticulation system in Melbourne and its suburbs. This complementary map was produced by the Department of Crown Lands & Survey [Victoria] in the same decade showing the distribution of water in Melbourne for use by fire brigades. Australia House is the oldest Australian diplomatic mission and it is the longest continuously occupied foreign mission in London. King George V laid the building’s first foundation stone in 1913 but it was not until August 1918 that he officially opened the completed building. The stringencies of World War I – principally shipping difficulties and labour shortages – had delayed construction considerably. Federation of the six Australian states formally took place on 1 January 1901 but it was not until 1906 that the Federal Government sent an Official Secretary to London to represent Australia. In the intervening years Australia was represented by State Agents-General, the first of whom was the Agent-General of Victoria. The building is significant for its unique design, Beaux Arts style and the materials used in its construction. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. The Australian Historical Records Society existed in Ballarat between 1896 and 1906. They were one of Australia's first historical societies, and were in the position to still be able to talk to early pioneers. They invited such pioneers to either submit letters or memoirs, or to address the Society's meetings, where their reminiscences were taken down in shorthand and later typed up. The Society also attempted to preserve memorabilia from Ballarat's early days, but on the disbanding of the group in 1906, materials were stored at the Ballarat Town Hall and were later lost. It is not known how the papers made their way to the then Ballarat Municipal Library, but they have been part of the Library's collection for many years.Mr. James McCain Meek boasted of building the first house in Ballarat, on the corner of Dana and Lydiard Streets, which was also a lemonade store and some say a sly grog shop. Meek arrived in Australia in 1847. He was in Ballarat 1851-1853, and in later life he returned to Ballarat to live at the Benevolent Asylum. When he became very ill in 1898 his daughter Marianne Dallimore took him to live with her, and he died at her property near Warrnambool in 1899. He wrote these reminiscences for the AHRS, of which he was a member. He was an excellent penman and illustrator and he produced several extraordinary complicated works. The original founder, a Mr Warren. engaged a builder named Wallace, to erect the hotel, and being unable to finance it, the story goes, handed it over to Mr Wallace, who finished the job, and received the first licence. The building was constructed of hard basaltic blue stone, quarried in the Eltham district, and partly of bricks made at Eltham. At that time the town owned not only an hotel, but a flour mill, a brewery, a brickworks, and other important industries. The hotel was carried on for the benefit of the first owners for over 30 years and was then purchased by Mr Chris Watson. The hotel was in the early days a well-known resting place for the gold diggers during the gold rush at Woods' Point. A new hotel was erected on the same site by Mr H. The Eltham Community and Reception Centre was Australia's first public mud-brick building. Commissioned in 1977 by Eltham Shire Council, led by Shire president (and architect) Robert Marshall, architects Whitford and Peck were asked to design a multipurpose facility in mud-brick and timber.
