Four folders containing an Engineering Design Part II Project. Each has detailed written information and drawings. No.1: To design an Extruder Addition to the hydraulic press in the plate shop to enable it to be used as an extruding press to operate on materials similar in behaviour to a wax. No. 2: To design a flywheel of uniform strength of not less than 25 feet. No 3: To design cams, valve gear and inlet and exhaust valves for a 6 cylinder truck engine. No 4: To design an experimental brown coal autoclave for drying brown coal in 10 kilogram lots. Jack chose to do Engineering while still at Footscray Technical School as it gave access to Diploma Courses and tertiary studies. This enabled him to enter the University of Melbourne and do a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering - 1945, 1946, and 1947. In 1948 he did a Diploma in Education at Melbourne University. From this path he was able to follow a career in teaching and his first appointment was at the School of Mines in Ballarat, (SMB) 1949. He became the first Vice Principal of SMB in 1960 and then Principal in 1964 to 1976. From 1976 to his retirement in 1987, he was the Foundation Director of Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). The Library building at Mount Helen Campus is named after him.Four manila folders with design assessment in each. .1) Charles Henry Ernest Williams No 1108 enlisted in the AIF in G Coy 15th Batt on 26.9.1914 age 29 years. Embarked for Egypt 22.12.1914, embark for Gallipoli 12.4.1915, KIA 2.5.1915, buried at Popes Hill. His body was later exhumed and buried in Quinns Post Cemetery. .2) Stanley Melville De Ravin had some 5 years military service prior to enlisting in the AIF on 24.8.1914 with the rank of Lieut in G Coy 7th Batt age 24 years. Embark for Egypt 19.10.1914, embark for Gallipoli 12.4.1915, promoted Capt 26.4.1915, awarded MID for “Conspicious Gallantry and Services” between 25.4.1915 - 5.5.1915, WIA 8.5.1915 GSW to Foot, returned to Aust classed unfit for General Service, promoted Major 13.7.1917, returned to France July 1917, transferred to Senior Officers School England Oct 1917, hospitalised in November 1917 he then left England for Australia with effects of a dislocated knee on 24.1.1918, his appointment in the AIF terminated on 24.4.1918. He was one of the “First Lot” of 93 men who volunteered in Bendigo. .3) Alfred R Williams No VX53411 enlisted in the 2nd AIF with 2/28th Batt on 21.4.1941 age 21 years. Promoted to Cpl he was KIA at El Alamein on 23.10.1942. .4) James Andrew Williams “MM” No 742 enlisted in the AIF in C Coy 40th Batt on 15.3.1916 age 29 years. Embark for England 1.7.1916, embark for France 30.9.1916, transfer to 15th Batt 13.10.1916, allotted Regt No 742A, hospital 26.1.1917 with Fracured Rib, rejoin unit 7.3.1917, WIA 11.4.1917 GSW left forearm severe remaining on duty for a short period, rejoin unit 16.7.1917, WIA 2nd occasion 26.9.1917 GSW neck and arm, during this action he was awarded the “Military Medal” at Zonnebeke, promoted Cpl 2.10.1917, rejoin unit 18.12.1917, WIA 3rd occasion 25.8.1918 Gassed, while recovering admitted with Diarrehoea 26.10.1918. After all this he gets himself into some trouble refusing a duty and is charged and reduced to the ranks. The patches and insignia belonged to Arthur COWLEY RAAF. He enlisted on 22.1.1942 age 18 years 6 months as No 50704 which was a ground staff No. From 12.2.1942 to 12.9.43 he went through various courses at Sale, Lake Boga, Somerset, Richmond and Adelaide. Finally accepted into Aircrew he embarked from Melbourne for Canada for training as a Bomb Aimer on 27.9.1943, arriving Canada via San Francisco 19.10.1943. He then attended Bomb Aimers Courses at Mossbank and Edmonton. Granted a Commission as a Flying Officer on 24.3.1943, embark for England 10.4.1944 and posted to various bases for advanced training. Finally on 7.3.1945 he is posted to No 462 Sqd RAAF flying Halifax Bombers in Bomber Command and begins operations from Foulsham. Arthur completes 8 missions before the war is over with Germany. Donated by Frank Verco service number R62418, who enlisted in the RAN as a young man. Frank was posted to the HMAS Voyager and was on board when the ship was involved in an accident which resulted in it's sinking in February 1964. Fortunately Frank was uninjured, he was in the bow area of the ship at the time of the accident Frank and went down with that section of the ship. Frank later served on the HMAS Sydney ferrying troops to Vietnam. Frank was in the RAN for three years, his rank was Ordinary Seaman/Electrical Mechanic.Royal Australian Navy ratings cap worn by able seamen when in uniform, this white cap has a tally band and chinstrap in black material with the embroidered name "H.M.A.S. VOYAGER". This type of cap is a personal purchase for 'wearing out' and is known to sailor's as a "tiddly" hat. The hat has internal red (for Port) and green (for Starboard) lining bands and a blue sweat band.embroidered tally band with the inscription : "H. M. A. S. VOYAGER" and the name "F. J. VERCO" written inside. The inside lining has the imprint "Manufactured Expressly for Sinbad Trading Company Melbourne, Made in England" -

E.Ashton joined the Victorian Police force in 1896;appointed a horse mounted constable in his first year of service and had a distinguished career that included arresting criminal "Squizzy Taylor in 1919 in Bourke Street, Melbourne. Ernest finished as Superintendent of Sale Police Station. His career is detailed in the Wycheproof family history section of our archive.
