St. James' Anglican Church, Orbost, was conceived and built as a memorial to the men 'who served and suffered during the Great War' as noted on the foundation stone. The Right Reverend GH Cranswick, DD, Bishop of Gippsland, laid the stone on 1 October 1927. This parish newsletter was published regularly to inform church members of all the latest news, events and information.For many years the Anglican people of Orbost have enjoyed the fellowship of the church and the children, in particular, were socially and spiritually involved. This item is reminiscent of the first half of the 20th century when church-going was more common.A four page newsletter titled, Parish Messenger for Orbost, November 1933, Vol 6 -No 83. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. From Victorian Heritage Database citation for HO57 Alnwick, 11 Railway Parade Murrumbeena https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35369 as at 30/10/2020 Alnwick" is situated at no. 11 Railway Parade, Murrumbeena, and was built for Sir James Patterson, former Commissioner of Public Works and Railways and Premier and Chief Secretary at the time. It is historically and aesthetically significant. It is historically significant (Criterion A) as the home of a former Premier and MLA who held a multitude of senior positions during his term of office spanning between 1870 and 1895. These positions included Commissioner of Public Works, Vice President of the Board of Land and Works, Postmaster General, Commissioner of Railways and Commissioner of Trade and Customs and Minister of Railways. Importantly, he held these offices during the period of Colonial expansion leading up to the economic crash of the early 1890s. The Orbost Rifle Club existed in the early 20th century. (There are records from 1900). It folded in the late 1970's.Target shooting is one of the oldest organised sports in Australia. Records date back to the British Marines at Sydney Cove in 1788. The Victorian Rifle Association (VRA) was formed in 1860. One of the most important adjuncts to the militia system from 1903 to the re-organisation of 1912 was the role played by the Rifle Club movement in Australia. At the time, these clubs were seen as the reservoir of manpower for a potential guerrilla force should any invasion occur. For Australia, the invasion fear was uppermost in the minds of the population. So important were the rifle clubs for the defence of Australia that the Commonwealth provided the training staff, rifles and ammunition so the clubs could function. Members were drilled, wore uniforms and practised all the basic skills of soldiering as well as target shooting. Orbost Motor Works was in McLeod Street, Orbost behind the Club Hotel. It was a dealer for Dodge cars and trucks. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of the book-keeping used by an Orbost business in the early 20th century. This is one of eight embroidered panels, completed during the 1988 Australian Bi-Centennial, and carried out under the auspices of City of Kew Council and the Kew Historical Society. Nearly 600 residents, including many children, participated in their production by adding a few or more stitches. A book records their names and the panels upon which they worked. The mid 1960s were boom years in flying training in Australia and the number of Aero Clubs grew rapidly. The Club played a significant role in the establishment of the small airport at Marlo and in the ongoing operation and development of the airport over the years particularly for patient transfer by aerial ambulance. The Serviceton Railway Station was completed in 1889 , with the Colony of Victoria and the Colony of South Australia sharing the cost. Ut was at Serviceton the the Victorian rail line and the Adelaide-Wolseley railway line of South Australia joined. The Railway Station included customs offices which were no longer necessary after the Federation of Australian States in 1901. This ledger was used by the Shire of Orbost from 1960-1962. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council This is a handwritten record of accounts for the Shire of Orbost Council. It vpredates computer records. The Shire of Orbost no longer exists having been absorbed by the East Gippsland Shire Council.A heavy cash book with wooden covers and metal hinges. These notes were used extensively in the book the "Wielands of Heathmont", pages 18 and 19, written by Pat Talbot and her husband Don. The notes tell how in 1922 a Railway League was formed with Herman Pump as chairman. The Wieland brothers used their horses and plough in 1926 to help build the Heathmont station. Pat was the-great -Granddaughter of Carl Wieland. The notes also include the Heathmont Information League. Orbost Town Band amalgamated in 1913 to form the Orbost Municipal Band under the conductorship of Mr Charles Spink. The Orbost Municipal Band played a major role in the Orbost community activities. Charles Spink made sure each soldier returning home from the 1914 to 1918 war was welcomed home in front of the Shire Hall to the music of the Orbost Municipal Band. The band played in the main street on most Friday nights.
