The author arrived in Victoria at the age of 10 years in 1839. His family gave their name to the Victorian town. He and his brother settled at 'Tyntynder' outside Swan Hill in 1845. His brother was killed by Aborigines. Brought into daily contact with the Aborigines of the area he gradually acquired their language and was permitted to learn much denied to other whites. By 1883 he had amassed a large amount of information which he put into the form of a Paper, read before the Royal Society of New South Wales. National Wool MuseumMedallion, CENTENAIRE DU DELAINAGE MAZAMET, 1951
This medallion was struck to celebrate the 100th anniversary of fellmongering in Mazamet in 1951. Fellmongering - In French, ‘delainage” means, literally, ‘de-wooling'. It is the industrial process of separating wool from sheepskins. In the 19th century, the southern French town of Mazamet became the world centre of délainage and played an important part in the Australian wool industry. At one time Mazamet was reputed to be the 15th richest town in Europe, and it was said that the town’s branch of the Banque Nationale de Paris (French banking firm) was the second largest in France. At its height, Mazamet had 48 fellmongeries and imported more than 100,000 tonnes of sheepskins a year from the southern hemisphere, mostly from Australia and Argentina. It also supported numerous associated industries such as tanneries, spinning mills and clothing manufacturers. In the 1980s Mazamet’s fellmongering industry fell into decline under pressure from environmental concerns and cheap imports. The town’s last two fellmongeries closed in 2004. The town continues to have a strong relation to Australia, with street names such as, Rue de Australie, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in recognition of a connection to the two distant lands. Today, half a century since wool importation largely ended, there remains a link to the past. Elite quality leather and woollen clothing companies such as Hermes and Chanel still source much of their stock in Mazamet. This medallion was presented to William Haughton and Co. who were one of Australia’s largest wool-buying companies of the first half of the 20th century. Wm Haughton had a major presence in Geelong and its “SKINS WOOL HIDES TALLOW etc.” signs were prominent on railways stations throughout the Western District and beyond. Haughtons had branches in all Australian capital cities, New Zealand, London and Bradford. Its agents in Mazamet were Maison Louis Maffre, an enterprise founded by M. Louis Maffre, mayor of Mazamet from 1912 to 1919. This medallion was donated to the National Wool Museum by the family of Sir Robert Southey AO CMG, former managing director of Wm Haughton & Co.Bronze medallion contained within purple case. On one side of the medallion, a mill worker is seen scraping the wool off the treated sheepskin. This quilt is called "Anzac Anniversary" and was made by Lois Densham in Melbourne in 1985. Lois Densham was a member of the Running Stitch group of quilters. This quilt was displayed in "Wool Quilts Old and New", a touring exhibition presented by the Running Stitch quilters group in 31 Jan. 1986 to Feb. 1987. It was catalogue entry no. 3. The artist's statement reads: "A veil of violence over a calm surface. Violent angles of the tartans and plaids with elongated curved segments which bring to mind Scottish warfare and Australians with Scottish forefathers. I began this quilt because of Anzac Day and the 70th anniversary of the First World War. Anzacs rededicate themselves yearly to peace within their circle of family and friends." Till CollectionTHE TILL COLLECTION SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT|The significance of the Alwyn Till Collection is that Alwyn was born in Mitcham in 1921. He attended Mitcham Primary School and Box Hill Boys High School. He served his Community mainly through his activities within the Christ Church Anglican Church Mitcham. He joined the Royal Australian Airforce in World War II in September 1939. He trained as a Pilot in Australia and Canada, was posted to England and saw action in Europe. He was shot down over France and rescued by and then joined the French Resistance and while fighting with them was fatally shot. A Baron fighting with him wrote to his mother to inform her of his death.|Alwyn's parents were Evaleen Victoria Till (nee Maggs) and Sydney Norman Till who first lived in Creek Road Mitcham, before moving to 573 Whitehorse Road Mitcham. His father served in World War I where his eyesight was damaged and he was taught by the then Blind Institute in suitcase making of which we have two examples in this collection. He died in 1931. Alwyn took over responsibility for his mother and sister Alison. We can understand how devastated his mother and sister would have been at the news of Alwyn's feeling that he must serve his country in World War 11.|His letters home were so precious to them that they carefully kept all his correspondence, notices of death and condolences from friends. After Alison's death in 2007 her relation Joan Walker transcribed each of Alwyn's letters home into two bound volumes. The executors, Joan Walker and Anne Drew deposited the original letters with the Whitehorse Historical Society. Due to their significance as historical documents of one serviceman's complete correspondence with his family the Whitehorse Historical Society Committee after consultation with the donors deposited the original letters with the State Library of Victoria. The Whitehorse Historical Society retains the copies.|Alison and her mother kept many family memorabilia and personal items which make up this significant collection as they show how people lived, worked and served in the local community and municipality.|This collection represents the love and devotion of the women to their families during the course of two world wars. The father was disabled as a result of World War 1 and died an early death and a son who thereafter took on the responsibility as head of the family at an early age. This young handsome charismatic son served his community in peace time and gave his life in World War 11. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. It shows a view across the holding of Walter Jeeves. Walter was the second son of Ellis Jeeves and grandson of Isaac Jeeves, the pioneer. Walter was given the house 'Kalorama' and 20 acres of lnd - most of it sloping. He established a commercial garden, initially growing vegetables but later flowers and shrubs. This land now forms part of Kalorama Park. The building in the photograph is the Kalorama Homestead with shrubs and trees planted in rows on the sloping site. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Black and White photo on a brown cardboard mount, showing a large group of men (about 30) and children (about 6) in front of and on the wooden frame of the partially constructed Belgrave Catholic Church Hall, Austral Hall, corner of (now) Reynolds Lane & Burwood Highway. The men are dressed in various combinations of hats, ties, shirts, jackets, trousers and work aprons. Some have tool belts or are holding hammers and other tools. Two small girls are seated on their fathers' laps. A man is sitting on his haunches at the front. He is wearing a suit and loose bow tie and holding a hat. He appears to be an official. Another man is patting or holding a dog. The building seems to have two walls partially constructed. There are trees visible in the background which are on the high side of the main road of Belgrave. A moulded brown cardboard mount measures 24.7 X 20.00. On the reverse side is written in pencil, 'Building Church hall/ at/ Belgrave/ Saturday 11th Dec 1920.' There is a stamped business name which reads 'Watson's/ photos/ Belgrave.' The Hall was built by largely volunteer labour as the Austral Hall, financed largely by Harry Luscombe's dances and functions. The land was donated by the Buckley Family. On the reverse side is written in pencil, 'Building Church hall/ at/ Belgrave/ Saturday 11th Dec 1920.' There is a stamped business name which reads 'Watson's/ photos/ Belgrave.' -
Wangaratta High SchoolWWI Postcard, 15/16/1917
William Thomas Jarrot was a former teacher at Wangaratta high School, who went missing in active service on 7th June 1917. The William family preserved this letter, unopened and unread for exactly 100 years. Written by Jarrot to his sister from the battlefront of Belgium, it was opened and read by the Wangaratta High School Prefect team on the 7th of June 2017.Wooden Australia-shaped frame around an embroidered postcard reading 'Sonoenic de France'. Embroidered flap contains a small card which says 'Thinking of you'. On the reverse side of the postcard is a handwritten letter by William Jarrot in 1917.Sonoenic de France Thinking of you My Dear Sister I received your welcome letter a couple dated June 15. I am quite alright and going up the line again pretty soon. I have received both registered letters alright. We are having great success lately but he is fighting hard in places. Robbie told me about his father having an operation. The weather is extremely mild here now. I haven't had a letter from Annie for some time now. i don't know whether I can get this posted now or not. Hoping this finds you all as well as it leaves me at present. With best love to all.
