The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Club (later The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Society) held their first annual meeting at the Temperance Hall, Napier Street, South Melbourne on Monday 22 Aug 1899. They held regular concerts and balls and generally celebrated all things Scottish. They had a male Pipe Band and during the First World War when many men were serving in the military they formed a Ladies Pipe Band. The Thistle Cricket Club played in the Scottish Cricket Competition around the time of, and after, the First World War.Small blue & white edged badge with 'SOUTH & PORT MELB' on the blue edge and 'THISTLE C.C.' on the white edge. The Ballarat Teachers' College opened at Dana Street Primary School in 1926. From 1927-1931 it was conducted at the Ballarat East Town Hall. Returning to Dana Street Primary School in 1946 to 1955, and eventually was held in a costume built facility in Gillies street from 1955 to 1976. In 1976 pre-service teacher training was moved to the Ballarat College of Advanced Education at Mt Helen Campus. This image was hung in the corridor of the School of Education (Mount Helen). It most probably dates from around the time of the transfer of Ballarat Teachers' College to the Mount Helen Campus of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Although undated, this plan is probably from the late 1940s or early 1950s. Around this time Port Melbourne Council were looking to built a basketball court in Lagoon reserve, and shelters and a senior citizen's clubhouse in Edwards Park. PMHPS does to believe the basketball court shown in the plan was built but the Port Melbourne Senior Citizens and Trugo Club is at the location shown on the plan. A shelter is in a similar location to the one on the plan. A children's playground existed in that location shown in a photograph from the 1930s. Distributed to nurses during campaigning for improved wages and working conditions in the 1980s, probably during the historic 1986 Victorian 50-day nurses strike. The 'White' in 'WHITE LIES' refers to David Ronald White, who was a state M.P. and the Victorian Minister for Health from 1985-1989. David White regularly featured in Branch newsletters around the time of the strike, and was regularly portrayed as a magician, skilled in 'white magic' that made 'nurses wages disappear'. The Hobart rescued the bulk of crew and passengers. Many of the entries are prefaced by Bro and a loose slip of paper in the ledger has The Ancient Order of Foresters, Warrnambool United District. The United Warrnambool District of the Ancient Order of Foresters was formed around 1869. It was changed to the Court Warrnambool No. 4126 at a later date. The Ancient order of Foresters was established in Leeds in England in the mid 1700’s to provide financial and support to its members in times of illness, unemployment, disability and old age. They were particularly active in the lives of members around the time of both world wars and during the depression in the 1930’s. The entries in this journal contain the names of many early people of the area as well as detailed financial records of an early friendly society. It has historical significance and social significance for the district. Allwood at Hurstbridge was named and first settled in 1837 by the Haley family. A house was built of one round of vertical slabs (red gum). Later it was the Hurst family home where Henry Hurst was shot by Burke the Bushranger on 4 October 1886. George Gray took over the property and the original home was eventually demolished. Gray, a fruit grower established an orchard and Allwood Nurseries which became a very successful business growing and exporting. This is probably around the time when this photo was taken where rows of fruit trees can be seen in the foreground. A house and associated buildings, possibly part of the nursery are behind. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' This Carte-de-visite (CdV) taken by renowned Wangaratta based photographer William Edward Barnes previously belonged to the donor's grandfather, Daniel Mullins who was a Police Officer stationed at Glenrowan soon after the Kelly gang siege. Today, the siege has become an important part of Australian culture and Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang (comprising of Ned Kelly, Dan Kelly, Steve Hart and Joe Byrne) has become ingrained in Australian history and mythology. A CdV is a sepia toned photograph mounted on card and is generally of a small size. This particular style was first patented by Andre Adolphe Eugene Disdéri (1819-1889) in 1854. In 1857, the CdV was introduced to England and after photographs of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family were taken using CdV in 1860 the popularity of this method reached a peak. In this photograph, eight men stand along the railway line near Glenrowan. The photo dates to shortly after 1880 and references the attempt by the Kelly gang to derail a police train in June 1880 on those very tracks. Ultimately, this plan failed and the police train was never derailed. Ned Kelly and the Kelly gang took their final stand at Glenrowan which has been immortalised through Australian popular culture.This photograph is part of the Burke Museum "Kelly album" which includes a significant collection of photographs and artefacts connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Ned Kelly and his gang have become ingrained in Australian popular culture and thus many museums, art galleries and private collections house material connected to the Kelly story which allows the events and people to be researched and interpreted. Artefacts and photographs pertaining to the Kelly gang are particularly valuable for Australian museums. This particular photograph is significant for its connection to Wangaratta based photographer William Edward Barnes and to the Glenrowan Siege of June 1880. Taken at an unknown time, after the siege at Glenrowan, this image depicts eight gentlemen standing about the railway line near Glenrowan. This is a reference to the Kelly gang's plan to derail a train which would barrel up to Glenrowan after news reached Melbourne that Aaron Sherritt had been shot by Joe Byrne in the Woolshed Valley. This image is important for its artistic information that it can provide about the Kelly story and the fashion and streetscape of Glenrowan.This sepia coloured Carte de Visite is attached to yellow cardboard. The obverse of the photo depicts the railway line near Glenrowan around 1880s. The rails are positioned in the centre of the image and are made on an incline of earth. In the foreground are three men, two standing next to the rails and one slightly off to the right of the image. In the background are trees which line the side of the rails and slightly in front of these trees is a group of five men standing on the rails. The reverse of the image is yellow card and contains printed and pencil writing. The printed writing is in the centre of the card. It reveals that the photographer was William E Barnes from Wangaratta. This is a program for a local theatrical performance. It was produced and directed by Frances Sinclair and contains a number of dance and musical items. There are a number of local Warrnambool names among the performers such as K T Swinton, Rex Fotheringham, Mavis MacDonald, Miss Rooney, W Goodall, John Reid, George and June Philpot. The dancers ranged from tiny tots, Petite ballerinas, Corp de ballet to the belles De Paris. Some of the other items on the program are the Scottish Samba, Tut and Khamen and Fiesta in Granada by Ferdinande Del Campo Caravani111 and Monty Bellow the Atomic Bull & Co which would suggest that it around the time of the Atomic testing in the Montebello Islands in the 1950’s. A program which shows the artistic side to the city and associated humour and talent. It has a large number of names of those involved in the production and performance and would be typical of concerts performed around the country at that time. There is a display of military hats as well. Likely to be a 'Dugout Night' where Legatees have a comradeship event around the time of Anzac Day in April. As well as flags there are signs such as 'Tiger Balm, Arrack, Jack Juice, Rice Wine, Suez Canal Water'. Identifiable legatees include John Stevenson (President in 1992), Fred Holdsworth (in airforce cap), Don Simonson (President in 1991) and Charles Munnerley who was chairman of the widows committee for many year to 1993. Black and white photo of girls in costumes on stage during an Annual Demonstration. They could have been butterflies. The photo was published in a news letter as the demonstration in October 1948. The album it was in is a collection of press photos taken during dress rehearsals from around that time. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Black and white photo of girls in costumes on stage during an Annual Demonstration. Some of them appear to be butterflies. The photo is very similar to one published in the newsletter as the demonstration in 1948. The album it was in is a collection of press photos taken during dress rehearsals from around that time. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Candles were the main source of lighting during the Colonial era. The candles were made at home from tallow, or animal fat, which was readily available and inexpensive. The tallow was soft, often had an unpleasant smell, band burned with a low, quickly fading light. Beeswax candles could be bought ready-made and lasted longer when lit. Bayberry wax could also be made into candles but was the process was labour intensive and time consuming. Spermaceti was from whale oil, a growing industry in the late 1800's, made firmer candles. Around this time wooden candle moulds were invented and uniform size and shape candles could be produced using the spermaceti wax. The candle mould is significant in the evolution of household lighting. It was an asset to the 19th century homemakers, allowing the production of their own candles in a uniform size. Candlelight allowed for the extension of time available for duties.Candle mould of tinplate for one dozen (12) candles. The tubular moulds stand upright, three rows of four, in a fitted tray. Another concave tray fits over the top ends of the moulds and has a hole above each of the candles, which is used for filling the moulds with melted wax. This photograph was taken at Riverview Farm, Victoria on Sunday the 5th of September as part of a day trip by the Wooragee Landcare Group. The event was about looking at land use on small farms and as a social get-together for the Group. Wooragee was also researching how small landholders could run some enterprises around the time of the trip. This photograph includes Julius Holt, Graeme Missen, Peter and Lesley Finedon, Sue Brunskill, Jacky Luisi, Bonnie Payne, Bob and Christine Stewart, Oliver Payne, and Gerri Boland. Wooragee Landcare Group was created in 1988. Its core mission is to work towards eradicating animals and pests from the land to protect the natural vegetation and promote revegetation projects.This photograph is a great example of the type of events that Wooragee Landcare Group has organized, while educating the public about the importance of land use management.Reverse: WAN NA E0NA2N2. Both photographs have arrows drawn on them pointing to the top of the cross bench seating windows where the unique drop bar latches appear. These were apparently unique to this class of tram. .1 - K class No. 100 - probably about 1920. Note the twin trolley poles on this single truck car when new. This car also apparently entered service with air brakes. .2 - K class No. 97 - probably about 1920. Photo taken in Glenferrie Road Malvern at High Street. The Shine Dome is one of seven projects that the Royal Australian Institute of Architects has nominated to the World Register of Significant Twentieth Century Architecture. In 1956 six architects were invited to submit plans for the Academy of Science's new building in Canberra and the Academy's building design committee selected Grounds Romberg and Boyd's proposal designed by Roy Grounds. It features a shallow arcaded concrete dome, sheeted in copper and was one of a number of domed buildings that appeared around this time internationally, expressing the optimism of the post-war years. It perfectly reflected the Academy's ambition to champion excellence in Australian science and promote international scientific engagement.
