K.G. Luke had a foundry in Queen's Parade, Melbourne which made badges and manufactured items for the Armed Forces during the First World War. He bought 40 acres of cherry orchard in Mitcham in 1952 from a Miss Cook, then went to England and attracted finance from Singer Brass Founders. The company became Luke and Singer. The three factories on site were Luke Manufacturing - stainless steel products and hospital equipment, Luke and Singer - a non-ferrous foundry producing components for industry such as nuts and cutlery, and Concentric Engineering - machinery components. Built in late 1912 for Mr Edmund Holt and his wife Ruby Ellen (nee Sutton). Edmund came from Coburg where his family had a grocery business. The Holt family lived there from 1913-1945. There were 3 children: Alan Judge (1912-1993); Frederick Sutton (1914-1992) and Raymond James (1918-2000). When Edmund Holt died, Mrs Holt remained there until 1952. Alan Judge Holt was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and a keen and meticulous local historian who contributed significantly to this collection. The house has been demolished and there are units on the site. The photo is significant as a record of past built heritage and for its association with the Holt family who were long-time residents of the area.A black and white photograph of an Edwardian style house. Juli HAAS (1952–2014) Born Melbourne Juli Haas studied under Euan Heng’s at the Monash University Churchill campus. Haas completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1989, a Graduate Diploma of Arts in 1990 and a Master of Arts (Research) in 1995. Juli Haas has won Sir John Sulman prize in 1995 at the Art Gallery of NSW and in 1994 and 1997 the Martin Hanson Memorial Works on Paper Prize. The Gippsland Art School collects examples of limited edition prints to use as a teaching collection. The 59th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. Initially raised for service during World War I, the battalion fought on the Western Front in France and Belgium between 1916 and 1918, before being disbanded in 1919. In 1921, it was re-raised as a part-time unit of the Militia in Victoria. They remained in existence until 1942 when, due to a manpower shortage in the Australian economy, the decision was made to amalgamate the battalion with the 58th Battalion to form the 58th/59th Battalion. Together they remained linked throughout World War II, serving in New Guinea and Bougainville in 1943–1945. Gladys Machin was the first female Councillor for the City of Caulfield. She served between 1950-1965 and was Mayor in 1955-56 and 1959-60. Machin championed the opening of the Caulfield Elderly Citizens Club in 1952 (later renamed in her honour as the Gladys E Machin Senior Citizen's Club). Machin was also President between 1953-1974, as noted on the engraving. The club now forms part of the Caulfield Senior Citizen's Centre at 8 Cedar Street, Caulfield South. Caulfield was one of the first local councils to establish an elderly citizen's club. This photograph used to hang in the main hall at Caulfield Senior Citizen's Centre alongside a photo of the Queen.This object is considered of historic significance for its portrayal of Gladys Machin, first female Councillor for the City of Caulfield. The RSS&AILA was the name of the RSL in 1956, called Returned Sailors and Soldiers and Airmen Imperial League of Australia. The Australian Imperial Service of Women’s Auxiliary of the RSL was formed by mothers, wives, widows, sisters, daughters and aunts of men who served in the Australian Imperial Forces in the First World War (1914-1918). The auxiliaries grew from this beginning to raise money for the welfare of men and women who served and their widows and families. In Victoria, the RSL Women’s Council of Victoria is headquarters for Auxiliaries throughout Victoria. The aim of Women’s Council is to support the Auxiliaries, in assisting the Returned & Services League to give a helping hand to Service Members, their families and the wider community. RSL Sub-Branches and their Women’s Auxiliaries work together towards the same goals. As of August 2015 there are 64 Women’s Auxiliaries with approximately 1250 members. The Lara Ladies Auxiliary was disbanded in September 1952, due to not enough members to continue the auxiliary (the ladies from the beginning becoming too old – First World War). Those left promised to continue to support the RSL in all its future activities, which the ladies continue to do today as members and Associate members. Here is the last entry, dated 8th September, 1952: “Since our last meeting our President Mrs Marshall has passed away. It was decided that as there is not enough members to continue the Auxiliary the Lara Sub Branch was requested to have the Auxiliary disbanded. Assistance was promised the League by the ladies present in all its futher activities.” There were four present at this meeting. Signed by P. The Daily Telegraph is a broadsheet newspaper published in London by Telegraph Media Group and distributed across the United Kingdom and internationally. It was founded by Arthur B. Sleigh in 1855 as The Daily Telegraph and Courier. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as monarch of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon took place on 2 June 1953. Elizabeth ascended the throne at the age of 25, upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952, and was proclaimed queen by her various privy and executive councils shortly afterwards. The ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey. Celebrations took place and a commemorative medal was issued throughout the Commonwealth. Mrs William Wright operated a shop at 95 Liebig street Warrnambool around the turn of the 20th century, where she sold clothing as well as a large range of embroidery and needlework requirement.Some of the work listed in advertisements include shadow work,princess applique and Mount mellick work. She was an experienced and talented needleworker and held classes in a range of work. Mrs Wright advertised that her students had success at local shows in items such as shadow work,, embroidered blouse, best cosy, canvas work, novelty pincushion,floss silk work.Her name was Martha but she always traded under her husband's name. She died in 1952. This dish is a a simple reminder of Mrs Wright This pin dish provides a link with one of Warrnambool's early shopholders and needlewomen. She is featured in a soon to be released publication about women in Warrnambool called Silent Lives. The SS Diomed was the last ? of the Blue Funnel Line's coal burners and the 4th (of 5 vessels) bearing the name Diomed and built in 1922. She made her last voyage from Australia to England in 1952, where she was broken up. The ship had been in service in Australia for 30 years and as a parting gesture the ship's bell was presented to the Mission by Alfred Holt & Co., the ship's owner. The bell was originally presented to the Port Melbourne Mission to Seafarers. It seems to have been a mark of respect for one of the Mission workers who regularly visited the ship. On closure of the Port Melbourne Mission in the late 20thC , the bell was transferred to the Melbourne facility and has been in permanent residence since then. The bell underscores the strong working relationship between the Mission to Seafarers, as an organisation, and the various companies and agencies that work on the oceans. It also represents the traditional relationship between Australia and England in that seafarers who visited the Mission were once primarily of British backgrounds or descent. While this situation has changed in more recent times, it is that traditional relationship that saw the establishment of the Mission in Australian ports in the first instance.(NB the previous 2 Diomed's had both been sunk in WW1 1915 and 1918 and the re-use of the name indicates it was a well respected name subsequently re-allocated to the 1922. and 1956 vesselsA brass bell with the word "Diomed" embossed on its waist and the word has also been painted black. The bell is mounted overall on a heavy carved wood base with brass dolphins at either side forming a support frame for the brass crossbar mount from which the bell is suspended. These gloves belonged to Maria Frisch who had survived a number of concentration camps during the war and emigrated with her daughter Anne to Australia in 1948. Maria and her daughter Anne were Polish Jews. As a small child Anne had been smuggled out of the Krakow ghetto in 1942 and was taken in by a Polish woman. At the end of the war Anne was reunited with her mother in Krakow. In 1945 they travelled to Italy to be with Maria's sister Ida who had lived in Florence since the 1930s. When Maria and Anne emigrated to Melbourne, they lived in Martin Street, Brighton. Maria's husband, and Anne's father, perished in Mauthausen concentration camp. Gilda GUDE (1918-1996) Gilda Gude worked in various media throughout her career, favouring figure and flower studies. She attended the Ballarat Technical Art School during the early 1930s, and later the George Bell School. In 1938 Gilda Gude and Betty Brown, another Ballarat Technical Art School student, designed the flora carpet for the Ballarat Begonia Festival. This artwork was completed for a competition sponsored by the large art supply company Wiltshires. In 1952 Gude won the Royal Art Society Drawing Prize, and began lecturing at RMIT in 1861. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Murray WALKER (1937- ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Described as one of Melbourne's Figurative Expressionists Murray Walker educated at the Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the Ballarat School of Mines) in 1952 and 1953, followed by the National Gallery School and RMIT Art school, Melbourne between 1858 and 1859. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (London) from 1960 to 1962, with a Summer School at the Academia della Belle Arti, Perugia, Italy in 1961. Myth, narrative and people form an important place in the work of Murray Walker, and he has worked in many mediums including printmaking, painting, collage, assemblage, ceramics and tapestry design. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and federal level. They also undertook some Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Ethel Rose Douglas married George Dawson Garvin in 1906 and was twice Mayoress from 1931 - 32 and 1938 - 39. Mayoress Ethel Garvin died in 1952 aged 74 and had been an esteemed member of the Women's Central Auxiliary of the Bendigo Base Hospital, a member of the Baby Health Centre and Mayoral Ladies Auxiliary. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Daley, born c.1865, died 8 Aug 1949. Daughter of William and Eliza, Melton, sister of Ann. The Daley family's cottage was on High St north nearest to Alexander St. The photo of William Daley was taken in front of his Bootmaker Shop. The shop remained in the family later being run as a Haberdashery shop by Lizzie his second daughter John Lugg rented the cottage after Lizzie death. Max Myers built a house on the east side of the cottage in 1952. The cottage was demolished and the weatherboard house was eventually moved to another location when the street became a shopping area 1970’s.
