The quilt was made by members of seventeen Soroptimist International clubs across Victoria to celebrate the Year 2000. The quilt squares illustrate some of the projects initiated, funded and supported by Victorian Soroptimists as well as illustrations of broader affiliations and responsibilities, including to the UN. Examples include the S.I.A.M. (Soroptimist International Aids Mediation) project by SI Berwick in Northern Thai villages which established industries and health programs for women and girls as viable alternatives to the sex industry. Revegetation of woodlands, wetlands and cleared land by SI Deakin. Donation of toiletries to women's shelters, police lock ups and church emergency centres in the western suburbs of Melbourne by SI Cut Paw Paw. Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a global volunteer movement with a network of around 72,000 club members in 121 countries. Advocating for human rights and gender equality, at the heart of Soroptimist International’s advocacy is its work across seven UN Centres, where UN representatives ensure that the voices of women and girls are heard. Memberships work on grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in communities worldwide. It has a flourishing Club in Geelong. The quilt was displayed from 2001 until 2023 in Soroptimist Headquarters Victoria at 383 Toorak Road, South Yarra (Soroptimist House) since touring the State of Victoria in 2000. The church in the photograph is the former Methodist Church which is on the NW corner of Barkly and Harker Streets inn Sunbury. It was built on land donated by Thomas Woods at Lot 14 Barkly Street where in 1870 a small weatherboard building was built. In 1879 John Browning gifted land at 13 Barkly Street for the building of a new brick church on that site. The brick church continued to be a place of worship until the June 1977 when the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches came together and worshipped as the Uniting Church. St. Andrews Uniting Church have been the owners of this building since that time. This certificate was awarded to Violet Murrell for a race sponsored by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria in 1929. Violet Murrell (formerly Violet Farmer) was one of the best female riders in Victoria, who won many events for dressage, show jumping and straight-out gallops at country meetings. She protested loudly that she was not allowed to ride at city tracks against the male jockeys despite beating them at country meetings. When she married Bill Murrell, a well-known jockey, they came to live in Mentone. Violet Murrell died in a tragic fire at her home in 1934 while trying to save her favorite horse, Garryowen, and her husband, who had tried to help her, died a few days later.Horse race award certificate awarded to Violet Murrell, riding Garryowen. The title Weeds, Poison Plants and Naturalised Aliens of Victoria is printed on the spine at the top in gold lettering with double gold lines above and below. The author Ewart. is printed in the middle with the date of publication 1909 at the bottom. Alfred J.Ewart, D.Sc., Ph.D., F.L.S. was the Government Botanist and Professor of Botany in the Melbourne University and was assisted by J.R.Tovey, Herbarium Assistant. Detailed coloured plates are throughout the book. It has two parts. P.110 Inside is a tan coloured piece of paper printed with the Department of Agriculture, Victoria. Chris. Christiansen had a barber shop in Sunbury and was the photographer in the town from 1895 until 1916. He conducted his business in a building situated on the corner of Evans and Brooks Streets. The print was created using a traditional woodblock technique. After ink is spread over a rectangular block carved with words and religious images, a thin piece of paper is placed atop the block and a roller is run over it. Then the paper is put aside to dry. This woodblock print on hand-made paper depicts Gesar, a legendary Tibetan warrior king who is invoked as a protector of the Buddha's teachings and emanation of Padmasambhava.
