... Methodist Church is a finely designed 1850's church building ...The bluestone 1857-58 former Wesleyan Church, on the corner of Fitzroy Street and Princes Street St Kilda, was one of the first Wesleyan churches in Victoria designed in the gothic style. It had a square central entrance tower and early English stepped buttresses and pinnacles above. It was later the St Kilda Uniting Church and was closed on 25 June 1978. It has now been covered to flats.According to Heritage Victoria: The old St Kilda Methodist Church is a finely designed 1850's church building and centrepiece of a group of individually significant buildings in an urban conservation area. Towered churches from the 1850s are rare in Melbourne and this building is thus of special significance in this regard as well as for its design and detailing. This building is an important work of architects Crouch & Wilson. Thomas Crouch was prominent in St Kilda Methodist church affairs and lived locally. He served a term as mayor of St Kilda and also designed the chapel at Pentridge and Methodist churches at Fitzroy, Collingwood, Flemington, Daylesford and Maldon. St Kilda was the home of many of the better off Melbournians in the 1850s, '60s and '70s. The adjacent former Sunday School is one of Melbourne's finest and the combination of fine church and hall side by side gives each added significance. https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/1110churches, fitzroy street, st kilda, crouch, st kilda uniting church, st kilda wesleyan methodist church, princes street -

It has aesthetic and historical significance. The building's aesthetic value is derived from the manner in which it demonstrates aspects of the Cottage Orne style, popular among Melboume's gentry during the mid Victorian period. Its historical value is derived from its association with J. W. Stephens, MLA, for East St Kilda and a prominent Caulfield resident.Page 20 of Photograph Album - two black and white exterior photographs of a house with both photographs on the right hand side of the page, the top in landscape mode and the bottom portrait. French influence is demonstrated by the high nave, apsidal sanctuary, spirelet and trumeau. The building is locally important as a historic focus for Anglican worship and early mission activity whilst its architectural grandeur is expressive of mid Victorian Caulfield's status as a suburban location for the Metropolis gentry.Page 56 of Photograph Album with three exterior photographs (two portrait and one landscape) of St Mary's Anglican Church.Hand written: St Mary's Anglican Church Eira Road [top right] / Neg 235 8 Oct 1966 [under top left photo] / 3 Sep 1972 [under bottom left photo] / 56 [bottom right] trevor hart, 1880's, elsternwick, glen eira road, st kilda east, church of england, gothic, st mary's, bluestone, apsidal sanctuary, spirelet, trumeau, anglican, 1870's, caulfield north, french-influenced low and mixed gothic style -

All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. The mansion has been the site of Shelford Church of England Girls’ Grammar School - now Shelford Girls’ Grammar School - since circa 1922.From Victorian Heritage Database citation for HO115: "Helenslea" 3 Hood Crescent, Caulfield North https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35212 as at 21/10/2020 ''Helenslea'' was built for Sir George Stephen, MLA, barrister and mining investor by 1863. It was built with an address to Glen Eira Road with the driveway gates close by the present Helenslea Road corner. The present address is no. 3 Hood Crescent, Caulfield North. It is historically, aesthetically and socially significant. It is historically significant (Criterion A) as the home of Sir George Stephen, MLA for Collingwood, barrister and mining investor and for its capacity to demonstrate Caulfield's early attraction as a residential retreat for Melbourne's eminent citizens. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as a villa residence characteristic of the mid Victorian period, predating the use of cast iron and comparing in this respect with Charles Webb's "Farleigh" (1865) at 6 Farleigh Grove, Brighton. Its substantial nature causes it to be the earliest surviving mansion house in the Municipality. The porch, external austerity and opulent entrance hall and staircase are important contributory elements whilst the survival of the exterior surfaces predominantly in an unpainted state enhances its level of integrity. It is socially significant (Criterion G) for its association with Shelford C.E.G.G.S. since 1922.
