These four pages list the Office Bearers and Committees of Melbourne Legacy in 1942. This is a record of Legatees involved in the first 20 years of Legacy. Some very notable names that were key in establishing Legacy, including Sir Stan Savige. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1940-50s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1940-50s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. This is a record of Legatees involved in the first 20 years of Legacy. A photo of Badge Day in the 1960s, with Ivan Layton, Mrs Mack and Legatee Bert Davis counting the donations near a Legacy Appeal tin. Ivan Layton was the Chief Executive Officer for many years. Legatee Bert Davis was the Chief Financial Officer in the early sixties. Mrs Mack was a generous fundraiser. She lived at Mount Macedon and opened her beautiful garden to the public on a regular basis to assist Legacy with fundraising. She was given a Legacy lone pine tree by a grateful Legacy to add to her garden. The letter accompanying the photo said the garden and tree was lost in the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983. Further research shows that Mrs Margaret Mack and her husband Mr John D. (Jack) Mack first opened their garden at Dreamthorpe, Mt Macedon, in April 1950 for a garden fete. It raised £140 for Legacy (source: Trove). The exact date of the photo is unknown but would be early 1960s. ON Behalf of the Maldon Hospital, Nursing Director Katrina Sprrow and resident Ruby were please last week to accept two donations - a total of $1000 - from the Masons. Southern Cross Lodge Master Peter Thompson presented a cheque for $400 which will be used to buy an ice machine for the Hospital. This was welcome news to Ruby, who enjoys a few blocks of ice in her drinks. Peter was joined at the presentation by fellow masons Ray Lindstrom and Art Lynch. Newspaper cutting from The Courier, Ballarat 19/6/1972 of the moving of tram 26 into the depot. Has photo of tram 26 being moved into the depot using steel channels and rails on their side. Also Bob Davies crane in photo assisting with move. The method of moving 26 was slow and difficult, having derailed it at the depot access road and dragged it up the road and then onto steel channels pushing it into the shed. Information to members for June-July 1972 gives the moving date as 16 June and completed on 17 June. The other trams were not moved until temporary track had been laid between the depot and the kerb in Wendouree Parade, roughly along the same route as the depot access track. It was opened in their presence in 1925. Fred John Williams was the son of John Williams and Thomassina Whilley. Together with his brother Frank Williams, Fred Williams was the proprietor of J. Williams and Sons. The brothers took over the business when their father, John Williams, retired in January 1893. In 1918 Fred Williams left Ballarat for Melbourne, at which time he was described as someone who had ‘tried to benefit the whole of Ballarat’. He was highly involved with the Forward Ballarat Movement. At the time of his death in February 1926 at Lorne F.J. Williams was a partner in the firm Williams Shoemen Pty. Ltd. Lyons family history: Arthur's father, Fred Lyons initially worked for George Rea's cab service until he set up his own business. He started with a horse and hansom cab but in time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived his whole life at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. Arthur had no relatives to distribute the material to. The buildings date from circa 1887 and extended some way down Sunbury Crescent. The address was 63 Sunbury Crescent on the corner of Union Road. Built by Albert Mills for the Premier Land Agency; taken over by Timothy Leigh in 1893. The building housed a variety of shops – initially the land agency, but later shops included at various times a fruiterer, florist, carpenter, fishmonger, upholsterer, plumber. However, by the time this photo was taken in the 1930s it was occupied by Triumph Press. The printing industry continued to have a lasting presence. Triumph Press was followed by Surrey Press and in 1970 New Life Publications moved to the site from Abbotsford. It was about this time that this original building was demolished to make way for a modern print works. Gradually the needs of the printing business absorbed other properties along the Union Road frontage. The boy in the photo is Arthur (Tiger) Lyons and beside him is Alf Johnson, the local printer. This pessary belonged to Dr Olga Bolitho who inherited it from Dame Ella MacKnight. Used by Olga Bolitho once or twice, according to correspondence dated 14/5/00 from Olga Bolitho [held with the donation form] Dame Ella Macknight was an obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital, Melbourne. She was appointed as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on 1 January 1969 for services to medicine. She gained her MB BS in 1928 from the University of Melbourne. After qualifying as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, (MD, Melb.1931, DGO Melb 1936), she was associated with the Queen Victoria Hospital from 1935-1977. Her appointments included honorary obstetrician and gynaecologist from 1935-1964; vice-president of the Committee of Management for 1963-1971 and president from 1971-1977. She was president of the Council of the Royal College of Gynaecologists from 1970-1972.After her death in 1996, her family set up a post graduate scholarship in her honour with the Royal College of Gynaecologists & Obstetricians.Clear plastic pessary. Pessary is circular, with a wide flange and a short stem. The stem is attached to the flange, rather than the pessary being moulded as one piece. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Lily initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Shirley was born after they moved to Barton Street.
