A postcard of Egypt from John Basil McLean, who signs himself Basil to his family. This item was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. Possibly these were with him during his time in the First World War and kept them as a mementos. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. His full war record is available from the National Archives of Australia (B2455, MCLEAN JBM).An example of correspondence between soldiers and their home during World War 1. Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. Photo shows a widow with a wreath and a member of the Defence Force near the Cenotaph. Her badge reads 'President' - Joyce Cleaves was president of the ILLC (Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club). A detailed list of duties broken into 4 parts; dealing with the occupants, the maintenance of the interior of the property, the maintenance of the exterior of the property and the catering and ordering of supplies. Also shows the conditions of employment, the salary was £5 a week with board included. The annual leave was 2 weeks a year. It was anticipated that a couple would manage the property so it outlines the days off per week could be taken together if proper supervision was arranged. The first manager was Mr Bert Frank and his wife was appointed Matron. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. Letter from Captain Bert Frank of 24 York St, St Kilda, applying for the manager position at the first Legacy Hostel, named Holmbush. It outlines his war service in WWI (with the 1st and 2nd A.I.F), civilian career running a Ford garage for 20 years and his interests. Also the education and experience of his wife, Clare Frank, and mentions their 10 year old son. It provides referees for both of them. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Three photos of the Historic Tall Ship 'Alma Doepel' at a beach and being viewed by a large group of children and adults. Presumably this was an outing for Junior Legatees to see the tall ship. The date is not known but Legacy has had a long relationship with the ship. The 1993 article in The Answer explains the ship offers 9 day voyages to approx 30 young people (15 to 18 year olds) and Legacy has sponsored 90 Junior Legatees in the first 3 years of the programme. 'Alma Doepel" is owned by Sail and Adventure Ltd, a Not for Profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of youth through sail training. The Alma Doepel is a three masted topsail schooner, Australian built and operated, with more than a hundred years of history behind her. She is currently under restoration in Docklands, Melbourne. Photos came from an envelope marked P8 Junior Legatee photographs, including the text "Photograph Alma Doepel". There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. Documents relate to aspects of Legacy committees from as early as 1923 to 1950. In the original archive project these documents were put together. The card (two copies) is a promotion of the Deceased Soldiers Children Welfare Committee. It is asking the Legatees where they would like to help - for instance the Junior Boys Club, the holiday camp, Big Brothers for deceased comrades sons, or with vocational placements. This shows that the legatees were being reminded of their obligation to Legacy. It also captures the part of the poem 'In Flanders Field' that relates to the Torch and a quote about Legacy's work. It is from approximately 1927. A letter dated 1966, that accompanies these cards is from Frank Doolan and it claims that this might the sole surviving example of the brochure. He says it is an 'early Legacy story' that is now nearly 40 years old. It also says : 'In those days Literary and debating amongst boys was an important part of our weekly Boys Class, under Jim Gillespie, Alan Murray, Harold Peters and Co, and we turned out some remarkable boys including Ted Kennedy, Graham Billiet, Jack Covue and Jim McGregor, and entered several of them at Ballarat South Street in this year of 1928, which was also the year of the first demonstration in the Melbourne Town Hall.' Another letter is to Legatee Joynt from Legatee J Barnes dated 18th November 1938, it mentions that the recent Clothing Committee meeting had decided it was better to approach Legatee wives directly to get donations of clothing for the junior legatees, by ringing them. It was attached to a report on the meeting of the Clothing Committee from 11 November 1938. A third letter is a a cover letter to the Chairman of Legacy (W E Orr) attached to the resolutions made at the Welfare Sub Committee meeting on 29 August 1950. A photo of Frank Doolan standing by the Olive Tree of Peace planted in the Western Lawn of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1973 to commemorate the first fifty years of Legacy. Legatee Frank Doolan was a long serving member of Legacy and given the honour of planting the tree. Four gentlemen at a afternoon tea event, presumably two are visiting Melbourne. Two have Legacy name tags, one says "Frank Meldrum, Melbourne". Other names and date unknown. It is possible it was the Legacy Conference held in Melbourne in 1973 which was the Golden Jubilee year, celebrating 50 years of Legacy. The general aim of the Australia-wide conferences was an exchange of ideas and methods of carrying out Legacy functions, and to form general policy for cooperation between clubs and groups.
