A portrait of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh that has been owned by Legacy for many years. It was previously hung alongside a painting of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, but has been moved to storage in the archive. Extremely similar to a portrait of Price Philip that is owned by the City of Melbourne. It had been painted in 1956 just before Price Philip opened the Olympic games in Melbourne. Perhaps this was a draft or copy of the City of Melbourne portrait. This document was sent from Sydney Legacy to assist Melbourne Legacy with fund raising. In 1974 Sydney Legacy raised $4,070 using this technique, and $163,883 in 1984 . The Citizens Committee was made up of non Legatees who were prominent within the business community. A prominent leader of industry was selected to chair the committee. The committee only met three times a year. The document sets out in detail the formation of the Torch Appeal Committee, Format of the invitation, Programme for the luncheon, Table lay out for the Official Top Table, Publicity, and 5 general points to be noted. A 'Lone Pine' was planted at Caulfield Racecourse in 1995 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II - as part of 'Australia Remembers'. This photo of Vice President Lucky Luscombe laying a wreath of remembrance at the tree was taken in 1996 when many Legacy widows, Legatees, and friends of Legacy participated in the Commemorative Race Day at Caulfield on Sunday 25th August 1996, marking the 75th Anniversary of the RAAF. Photo of a legatee marching on Anzac Day, his name is not known. The year is not known but the photo was with others from the 1980s to 1990s. His medals include a Companion of the Order of Australia around his neck. Other medals indicate he served in Korea and Vietnam. He is also wearing a sprig of rosemary and a small Australian flag. Information on the life of Legatee Frank Doolan from a dinner held to celebrate his 50 years of service on 27 May 1974 at the Oakleigh and Waverly Branch. Speakers included President Bill Braidie, Legatee Jim Gillespie and Legatee Frank Doolan. Frank recalls how he delivered the Toast to Legacy at the Perth Conference. In it he likened Legacy to a valuable cloak with foundations of gold and silver laid down by the founders, and additional threads added by successive legatees to become what the public see today. Legatee Doolan was a very active Legatee, starting within the first year of Legacy when he was nominated by Bill Laver and Charles Copp in 1924. While he never sought 'office but he was always there - in the background - able and willing to actively serve'. In World War 1 he enlisted in November 1917 and served with 1st Division Signal Company and in France. After Armistice he attended a course for young AIF surveyors at the British Ordnance Headquarters at South Hampton. Famously it was Frank that proposed that the spirit of Legacy is service to the widows and children. "Here it received its soul. The thoughts transmitted to the Board by this quiet man." He was part of the Legacy team who worked enthusiastically for the establishment of the Shrine. It was his technical skill as a surveyor that enabled the ray of light to shine on the Stone of Remembrance at 11 am on 11th November. Also to solve the complication of daylight saving by positioning two mirrors. For this he was awarded the British Empire Medal. He was involved in the purchase of Legacy House in 1955 and also in the Lone Pine project in 1964. He was also established an archive at Legacy House to try and capture the history of Legacy. A speech introducing the first Foundation Day speaker. Part of the speech says:- "Last year our Board of Management considered that it would be very fitting if the importance of this historical occasion in the life of Melbourne Legacy could be recalled annually, consequently it was unanimously decided that our weekly luncheon meeting on the Tuesday nearest to the 25th September each year should be henceforth known as 'Foundation Day' luncheon. This therefore is our 'Foundation Day' Luncheon No. 1. Melbourne Legacy is privileged also to have quite a few of our foundation members still serving the Legacy cause in one way or another. Furthermore, we are truly delighted to see so many very early members of Melbourne Legacy in attendance here today, and one of them in the person of legatee Brian Armstrong who was inducted into Melbourne Legacy back in 1928 and who was elected President of this Club for the year 1937, has graciously agreed to be our speaker of the day and Brian has appropriately chosen as the title for his talk on this special occasion - 'Forty Years On'." For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. 1995 was the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and the race day was part of the "Australia Remembers" commemorations. Also a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: "Over 800 members of the Legacy family (past and present) reunite at the "Australia Remembers" Back to Caulfield Commemorative Race Day held on August 12th. It was a special day which incorporated a wide range of activities, including a display of military vehicles, a flyover, a parachute jump by the Red Berets, military bands, and displays of memorabilia when the racecourse was used as an army camp. An official ceremony also included the presentation of a Legacy 'Lone Pine' (a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine') by the President of the Melbourne Legacy, Legatee David Millie, which was very warmly received by the Chairman of the V.A.T.C., Mr Peter Lawrence. A certificate showing that the Legacy Club of Melbourne was a corporate member of the Australian National Flag Association (ANFA) in 1984. ANFA was founded in 1983 to promote the importance and significance of our national symbol – the Australian National Flag. The certificate was signed by Bruce Ruxton who was chairman of ANFA at the time. Widows would often volunteer to visit other widows in hospital. Here Vi Scales is visiting Maeve Kirchert, a patient at Azalea Lodge, Dandenong.
