Book - Minutes, Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club Minutes, 1985-1993
... service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated.... During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC ...This is the Minute book of the Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club, from February 1983 - October 1993, detailing the activities and decisions of the ILLC. The Intermediate Legacy Club was established by Junior Legatees who had outgrown the junior activities. Initially just males but later the Intermediate Ladies also formed a club. From this book it appears to have functioned from at least 1953 to 1990. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing.Records of financial information and fund raising activities undertaken by the ILLC to assist Melbourne Legacy.Red mottled covered book with faint blue numbered pages. Binder Victorian Education 1947, Circa 1947
... produced during the second World War and made special references... World War and made special references to it. This publication ...These educational publications covering a topical monthly theme and providing a slice "of the era" in general knowledge, was used by schools in Victoria as a basic starting point for a particular level of perceived knowledge. The general articles and extracts contained within, were not targeting a specific gender or socio economic sector but designed for all children at a particular stage of their development. This publication did have a format of: 1st page topical, e.g. ANZAC day scouting (U.N.), one page of regional Victoria, one page of poetry, one page of short stories, one page of world history and the last page of a song, complete with appropriate notes. These publications were produced during the second World War and made special references to it. This publication occurred during a period when the Education Department was highly authoritarian in its approach to State levels of learning. Fragmenting "special" schools like later "New Age" teaching methods and doctrines (home schooling) were repressed with considerable force. This binder full of monthly educational studies was particularly important to "hidden away" rural communities such as in the Kiewa Valley, especially at this point in time (World War II). The teaching methods used by local schools provided the necessary break through required by local school children to stop any adverse knowledge deficiencies due to factors of regional isolation. School children with in the Kiewa Valley would be able to integrate with children from all regions, weather in cities or larger towns. This hard cover (card) binder contains 11 monthly publications produced by the Victorian Department of Education for Grades 7 and 8 in the year 1947. Each issue has 16 pages with the cover page covering the major theme for the month. Each issue is placed within the folder by the folded middle page constrained by a thin cord. This is the only method to contain each monthly edition as they have no clasp or are stapled. The folder"SCHOOL PAPER COVER" underneath and to the left is a sketch of the world (revolving desk top stand) on top of a book and next to this "Name ------------ " underneath "Grade-----------" underneath "School---------" all enclosed by a thin border line.school paper, victorian education curriculum, education news letters, loose leaf educational binders -

... . During the Second World War the business was requisitioned... in the partnership at 23. During the Second World War the business ...C. Glover and Sons Pty. Ltd. was founded on Brougham Street, Geelong c.1870. They operated as a wool and sheepskin storeroom situated on both sides of Brougham Street; where the current Elders building is located. The store was owned and operated by Joshua Glover with his brother Cyrus. A third brother Arthur also worked at the store. It was a very successful business and employed up to 40 men at its peak. Cyrus Glover died quite young, around 54, with his son Howard taking his place in the partnership at 23. During the Second World War the business was requisitioned by the Australian Government. Their wool was utilised to produce defence uniforms for Commonwealth personnel C. Glover and Sons was a very successful business which reluctantly closed its doors around 1975, as a result of the wool industry taking a downward turn Australia wide. It was decided by the family that this was the only option at the time. Howard Glover was Jan Glover’s (donor) father in law. Jan Glover donated these images to the National Wool Museum in 2021. Image 1 is a black and white image of a truck with 11 men standing in front. The truck is loaded with dumped bales of wool. The image is taken outside of the C. Glover and Sons' building. The reverse of the image is stamped. Image 2 is a black and white image of 2 rows of men. The first row of six men are sitting in their cricket whites. The second row of 10 men are standing in suits bar one-man 3rd from the right, who is also in his cricket whites. The image is taken on a cricket oval with the grandstand visible in the background. Image 3 is a black and white image of 12 men. The first 3 men are sitting on wool bales while the other 9 stand behind. The image shows the word 'record' spray painted on a piece of timber hanging behind the man. This is expressed in the men's faces with emotions of joy and celebration coming through. The men are standing in front of large machinery presumed to be used for wool pressing/dumping. Image 4 is a black and white image of 15 men and 5 horses in front of two large white sheds with triangular rooves. The men are all standing with the majority having their arms crossed. On the left is a cart carrying sheep skins. On the right are two smaller carts that appear to be carrying wool bales. Image 5 is a black and white image of a wool and hides storeroom. The ceiling is lined with multiple sheep skins while the floor has multiple wool bales neatly stored. In the background of the image, two men can be seen inspecting wool while sitting at a small white table. Behind this, 5 men are standing in a crowd while another man is seen to the left of the men at the table. This separate man is standing inspecting a wool bale. Image 6 is a black and white image of a wool storeroom. Numerous bales of wool can be seen open for inspection stacked semi-neatly one next to another. 6 men can be seen inspecting a bale of wool in a group. World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed ...Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. This cane basket was used at QBIC for transporting heavy items. The side has been reinforced with wood and four metal bands to help the cane keep it's shape and take the weight of heavy items. The base has two pieces of board and rotating wheels are attached to the middle of the lower board which allows it to sit above ground level and be wheeled over flat surfaces. Plane Compass, 1941-1943
... world war 2... of the Australian Military Forces during World War 2 and made by J W Handley... the industrial capability of Australia at the start of World War 2 ...This compass is the type used by an artillery unit of the Australian Military Forces during World War 2 and made by J W Handley. Although having owned the factory site since 1935 at 657 Victoria St J W Handley began to produce various items for the Australian Military forces after purchasing and expanding the factory to 655 Victoria St. It appears that he, or some one else may already have been occupying the site for industrial purposes, such as (Manufacturing, Foundry and Electroplating) since at least 1929. J W Handley Pty Ltd was actively producing items for the Military during the war years, a newspaper article from 1939 shows the factory in production and employing 420 people during 1939. J W Handley after the war moved into producing other non military items including a range of fishing reels. The company ceased trading in 1987 and was deregistered as J W Handley Pty Ltd in 1990.The item demonstrates the industrial capability of Australia at the start of World War 2, this item is actively sort by collectors of Australian Military memorabilia and represents a time in Australian history when the country was at war and the general population was concerned about an invasion from Japanese forces. It also therefor is of social significance as many Australians served in the Military forces at that time and the item is complete and in very good condition.A plane table compass, sometimes referred to as a trough compass, used by surveyors and artillery crew to accurately establish magnetic north. The compass is precision machined of brass material with a long needle to ensure accuracy. Mention is made of the restrictions and difficulties (petrol rationing, scarcity of paper to name some) that occurred with running a wartime economy, and trying to implement the social welfare programme of Legacy. In particular, The Welfare Committee. Despite the difficulties of the time, Legacy not only continued its work but expanded the programme e.g. the establishment of a Legacy Dental Clinic in Collins St, Melbourne. The document also notes with some sadness the death of some Junior Legatees due to war service, and the realisation that the work of Legacy will need to be expanded due to World War 2. Legacy Probation Officers paid tribute to the never failing support of the Police department. To quote, "In all cases the Police were just as anxious as we to save the boys from the Reformatory of Gaol." There are many documents styled as 'The work of 19XX' so it was a way legatees reported the main events of the year. Many were put into the original archive started by Frank Doolan and were labelled with the letter 'H' to signify History.A record that Legatees were recording the major events of the year in a report for future reference. Significant in that the Law Courts valued the work Legacy was doing to reform their Junior Legatees who had appeared before the courts.White quarto paper, black type. Pages held together by a sewing pin. Pages numbered in pencil, top right hand corner. ... Vasey and during the second world war she became secretary... and during the second world war she became secretary of the AIF ...A newspaper article about the 10th Anniversary of the War Widows Guild published on 23 November 1955. The War Widows Guild was founded by Mrs Jessie Vasey. She was the wife of Major-General Vasey and during the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. This reproduction on display board may have been for an exhibition of Guild memorabilia at some time. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this board, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. Both organisations helped war widows in various ways.A record of the work done by Jessie Vasey and the War Widows Guild.Newspaper article 'Women can get along' reproduced on a display board for signage of an exhibit.war widows guild, jessie vasey, wwg -

Following the Second World War he held many important ...A typed copy of a speech by Legatee Brian Armstrong delivered as the Savige Memorial Oration at the Federal Conference of Legacy Clubs in Canberra on 22 October 1954. It is an account of Savige's life, his war service and his role in Legacy. Legatee Armstrong was a good friend of Savige. The moving address described General Savige's life and service career, and how he formed Legacy in 1923 at the suggestion of his former Commander, Major General Sir John Gellibrand. He said at the time of his death the late General had been a member of Legacy for 30 years, and had been chosen to represent Legacy at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Following the Second World War he held many important posts, one of the most notable being Co-ordinator of Demobilisation. Legatee Armstrong told the conference that if a memorial to the founder of Legacy was required, they only had to look around themselves. This is a photocopy on flimsy brown paper, two other copies are in the archive.A record of the life and service of Legatee Stan Savige.Brown quarto paper with black type x 11 pages of a speech about Legatee Savige.Typed on top of first page 'Sir Stanley George Savige KBE. Memorabilia - Shoulder titles
... World War. Decolonisation coupled with competing ideologies... the Second World War. Decolonisation coupled with competing ...Embroidered shoulder titles were worn on the upper sleeves of uniform prior to the introduction of colour patches c.1990. Regular regiments used the numerical designations First, Second, Third and Fourth. CMF regiments used their territorial designation: Victorian, Queensland, New South Wales, Hunter River, South Australian, Prince of Wales's and 10th Light Horse. Australia’s defence plans and priorities changed after the Second World War. Decolonisation coupled with competing ideologies created an unstable situation in the Asia-Pacific region. Australia recognised it needed both regular and citizen forces. Six Armoured Corps regiments were formed in 1948, all with territorial titles reflecting their Light Horse heritage. In Victoria they were 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse and 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. The 1st Armoured Regiment, formed July 1949, was the first regular RAAC regiment, followed by 2nd, 3rd and 4th Cavalry Regiments decades later. Unique collection of regimental titles worthy of preservation and display.Display board containing the badge and shoulder title of 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles flanked by the formation signs of 2nd Armoured Brigade. Following rapid growth after the Second World War, the High School... the Second World War, the High School was established as a separate ...Post primary education in Wodonga began in 1923 when the existing primary school, which opened in 1857, became the Wodonga Central School. It extended students for a further 2 years of secondary schooling. In 1938 the school was declared a higher elementary school with 90 students in the secondary classes. Following rapid growth after the Second World War, the High School was established as a separate school in 1954 with 249 students and the primary students were relocated to premises in Ariel Street. However it rapidly became evident that a new school building needed to be established to cater for growing enrolments and specialist facilities. After persistent pressure from the Advisory Council, Stage 1 of the new school was built and occupied by Form 1 and 2 students in 1960. The final stages were completed during term 3, 1962. The official opening of the new Wodonga High School was declared by The Hon. J. S. Bloomfield M.L.A., Minister for Education, on Friday 30th April 1965.This program marks the an important occasion in the development of secondary education in Wodonga.A pocket from a Wodonga High School blazer made of a wool blend fabric. Repatriated to Australia he was emaciated and clutched his prize possession, an old spoon. Part of his daily life during the extreme hardship of the camp, the spoon was a symbol of his survival, a constant in extreme uncertainty.’ ‘Home again Jack married, started a family and embraced peace. A kind and gentle man, I was fortunate to have known him. The coming of peace had given back what war had nearly taken away.’ This item won the Lucato Peace Prize and is part of the Federation University Art Collection. During the Second World ...A group of Australian soldiers photographed outside "The Dome of the Rock" shrine in Jerusalem. During the Second World War, Palestine was under a British mandate and Australian and New Zealand soldiers were back helping the British army to stop the Germans from capturing Egypt and the Suez Canal. They fought alongside several Palestinian brigades enlisted into the British Army under The Palestine Regiment. The soldier sitting second from right is Sergeant Stanley Swainson BEDFORD VX79894 2/24 Battalion. Bedford was born 30/12/1907 and enlisted at Caulfield on 18/5/1942 aged 34 years. He served in the Middle East between August 1942 and February 1942 and Milne Bay New Guinea between August 1943 and March 1944 prior to his discharge on 9/6/1945. He was the Battalion Tailor and is mentioned on page 251 of the book 2/24 - A history of the 2/24 Australian Infantry Battalion edited by R.P. Serle. World famous "Dome of the Rock", site of the ancient temple of Solomon and now a Muslim shrine. During the 7th century it served as a testament to the power of the new faith of Islam. The Dome of the Rock is one of the earliest surviving buildings from the Islamic world. This remarkable building is not a mosque, as is commonly assumed and scholars still debate its original function and meaning. With the exception of the two uniformed females, presumably nurses, one soldier if not all identified as serving with the 2/24th Battalion known as Wangaratta's Own.Original black and white photograph of soldiers standing in two rows and a row of soldiers and two females in uniform seated on step with ancient building in background.dome of rock, jerusalem, stanley swainson bedford -

Painting - Portrait of Dolly Barton for Peoplescape, Betty L. Barberis, 2001

She kept the family dairy ...In February 2001 the National Council for the Centenary of Federation called upon Australians to nominate someone whom they felt had significantly affected their lives, their community or our country. Thousands of these heroes and quiet achievers were selected. Betty Churcher, a member of the National Council, chaired the Peoplescape Selection Panel. Nominators then made life size, cutout figures to represent their "hero". The sculptures were installed in alphabetical order, on the hill at Parliament House and down to the Federation Mall in Canberra, each with a plaque at its base outlining the individual's achievement. This portrait was painted by Betty Barberis to represent her mother "Dolly" Barton. Dolly raised 12 children, lived through 2 World Wars and the depression. She kept the family dairy farm running whilst her husband was serving in World War 2 whilst still supporting the war effort through the Red Cross and CWA and the church guild. Betty’s great body of work included landscapes, banners, millinery, ceramics, and a bronze sculpture of her husband Vern Barberis who was a fellow schoolteacher and represented Australia as a weightlifter, winning a bronze medal at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. She was also an art teacher of 22 years. Betty passed away at The Grange, Wodonga on 26 November 2013.This portrait was created by a renowned and highly regarded artist from Northeast Victoria for a national celebration of the centenary of Australian Federation in 2001.A large oil painting depicting a portrait of Dolly Barton, mother of the artist Betty L. Barberis. The painting includes representations of her 12 children, her farming way of life, her commitment to the community and to the war effort.
