Information from donor: "The orange booklet was printed mid-to-late 1930’s or early 40’s by my father Curtis Drenen, and written by my grandfather Thomas Drenen. The original publication would have been handset by Thomas’s employees as he had a keen interest in the mines financially. This booklet has been set and cast in hot metal on a linotype machine my father purchased after taking over the Rutherglen “Sun” and passing of Thomas in July 1932. This booklet was one of half a dozen I put together when I found some flat sheets of 8 page sections stored away in a cupboard. I folded, collated the sections, stapled and trimmed these Sheets during my time at the “Sun” from 1951 to1969. Where the rest are I have no idea. I wrote the final paragraph on Page 44 from a copy provided be my mother." Thomas Drenen was Proprietor and Editor of The Rutherglen "Sun," from 1886 to 1932. In 1858 Hugh Wallace , undertaker and cabinet maker, moved from the Assembly Rooms at the corner of Gipps street, and opened his new Bank Hotel in Sackville street, next door to the grand Bank of Australasia. The hotel seems to have been the favourite meeting place for many of the sporting organisations of the time , including the Football, Rowing, Athletic and Gymnastics clubs . The second licensee was Thomas Pearson, who came to Belfast in 1855, working first for the Harbour master Capt. John Mills , then as the first Assistant Lighthouse keeper when it was built in 1859 . He was promoted to Lighthouse keeper 2 years later. The hotel continued in business with a further 8 licensees until it closed in 1918. Since which it has housed a diverse number of businesses, collecting a veranda along the way. It is still in use in Sackville street today. Quite a few of the Licensees of Belfast seem to have also had an interest in the Funeral business. Possibly, it was a good commercial undertaking, the same people providing them with a living selling spirituous liquor, and when they died of the effects , paid again for their burial. Keith Winterbottom was born in the small settlement of Moulamen near Swan Hill in 1891.He enlisted in the AIF on the 7 April 1916 as a private and allocated to the 1st refit for the 38th Battalion. He was single and 25 years old and a strong 6 footer after working as a labour/timber cutter around Swan Hill. He embarked for France in July 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth on the 10 August 1916. Proceeded to France [ Ypres] on the 16 September and taken on strength with the 59th Battalion on the 8 October 1916. He suffered very serious GSW to his chest, arm, and left leg on the 10 December 1916 and was admitted to the Casualty clearing station at Heilly on the 11 December. His wounds were extensive and major and he died of these wounds on the 12 December 1916. He was buried at the Hospital Cemetery at Heilly, France. His kit that was returned to his mother contained a football, scarf, a razor strop and two ties. On the 18 June 1923 is mother was given the Memorial Plaque 318573 inscribed with her son's name Keith Winterbottom Memorial Plaque [Dead Man Penny]Inscribed with the name Keith Winterbottom. A draft of a report that was compiled in response to a request for any information on the early history of Legacy. The author is unknown but it was addressed to President Foseltt - meaning it was 1972. It could have been in the 1960s when Syd Birrell was forming an archive, or the archive project by Frank Doolan in early 1970s. A collection of documents which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. He outlined which legatees suggested different things - such as Selleck suggested the name of Legacy, Doolan put forward the child scheme. He also recorded birth dates of some Legatees: Selleck born 20/8/1895 ; Savige 26/6/1890 ; Ellet 30/3/1880 ; TW White 26/4/1888. Other documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Newspaper articles about the Christmas Party held at Government House in 1960. One is from The Age on 12 December 1960 and two from The Herald on the same day. Melbourne Legacy would hold Christmas parties for junior Legatees at Government House for many years due to the Governor of Victoria being patron of Legacy. Two photos show the Governor Sir Dallas Brooks the reins of a miniature mail coach drawn by two small ponies. Sitting with the Governor is 10 year old Sandra Fitzpatrick of Moe. Children would come from all over Victoria. Two other photos show archery with the Kew City Bowman providing instruction of archery to the children. Judith Berry was instructing Ken Barberis 8 years old. Also a photo is of Mickey Hodder, 11, of Lower Templestowe and Ivy Murray, 5, of Box Hill. The articles were cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. Distinguish Flying Cross medal awarded to John Hudson WILKINSON 400444 born 18/2/1914 at Rutherglen. He was a Pharmaceutical Chemist prior to enlisting in the RAAF on 2/9/1940 He was reporting missing during air operations over East Prussia and later presumed to have lost his life on 30/8/1944 Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross - citation reads Pilot Officer Wilkinson is an air gunner of great ability and determination. He has taken part in a large number of operational sorties many of which have been against some of German's most heavily defended targets. On one occasion in March 1944 when engaged n an attack on Stuttgart a Junkers 88 attacked his aircraft five times but Pilot Officer Wilkinson by his accurate directions to his captain and coolly aimed return fire drove ff the enemy aircraft in a badly damaged condition. At all times his unwavering devotion to duty and constant alertness have inspired confidence in his crew. The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is the third-level military decoration awarded to officers, and since 1993 to other ranks, of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and other services, and formerly to officers of other Commonwealth countries, for "an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy"Black case which opens out from right side. Mr Hugh Brown farm, collecting logs for fence and preparing the ground to grow fruit trees. Mr Brown planted 8 acres of fruit trees. Hugh Brown (1830-1930), born in Ireland, arrived in Adelaide in 1855 and in the Mordialloc district in 1856. Mr Brown brought land in 1866 and built his farmhouse “Pine Vale” in 1870 near the site of the present Mordialloc Secondary College (then part of the property) and extended his property when the swampland was made open for selection in 1871. The property was a market garden and orchard. Hugh Brown married Zillah Baxter (1866) and they had six sons, five living to adulthood. The Brown family increased their land holding until they held a major part of the farmland between Mordialloc Creek to almost the Aspendale Railway Station. The property was a market garden and orchard. Mr Brown took an active interest in the public life of the community, a Justice of the Peace; Councillor of Dandenong Shire for over 30 years, was twice Shire President; and a founding member of the Mordialloc Mechanics Institute. Thomas Sweeney was born in Tipperary, Ireland, in 1803, the son of an Irish farming family. As a young man, he became embroiled in the continuing struggle against colonial domination and the injustices of the land tenure system and was captured when trying to burn down the farm house of Patrick Guyder at Cullahill in 1823. His sentence to be hanged was commuted to Life Transportation to New South Wales. After 8 years as an assigned convict within the confines of the NSW Colony, Thomas's 1831 Ticket of Leave allowed him to work for himself. His 1838 Conditional Pardon allowed him to finally break free of that colony and move to the Port Phillip District to start a new life as a free man.In June 1842, while living on the Yarra in Boroondara, Thomas applied to purchase 110 acres in the Parish of Nillumbik. He called his farm 'Culla Hill' after the place in Tipperary where he had been captured in 1823. The Dibb Report into mainland defence of Australia,1986, among other things identified the requirement for protection of key assets in Northern Australia and the possibility of involving Army Reserve (Ares) units in this thus releasing regular forces for offensive operations. Dibb also pointed out that this defined role would result in a huge lift in Ares morale. In June 1988, the 3rd Division (3Div) conducted a Tactical Exercise without Troops (TEWT), Exercise ‘Distant Trumpet’ in the Katherine- Darwin area to study problems associated with defence against low level incursions against Tindal RAAF Base. Exercise ‘Northern Explorer’ followed in October of that year when units of the 3Div including A Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles sent patrol groups to get a first taste of environment and conditions. Post-Exercise reports had to include recommendations re: health, equipment and adaptation of Standing Operating Procedures (SOPs) in preparation for the new role deploying to Northern Australia. The first deployment by 8/13 Vistorian Mounted Rifles was in 1988. Deployments continued i following years. In September 1993, 3 Troop (Wangaratta) VMR Squadron 4/19 PWLH commanded by Captain Kelvin Robertson deployed to NT. The training began with airfield defence at Tindal followed by a 1000km recon into Arnhem Land in four Landrovers. The troop reported on the conditions of the roads, airfields, bridges (mainly causeways) resources such as fuel supplies in the towns and infrastructure. Each troop taking different route. 3 Troop had the Northern route through Kakadu National park across the East Alligator River to Oenpelli then to Maningrida and Ramangining and south to the Central Arnhem Road and back to Tindal Air force Base. Kelvin Robertson enlisted on 6 April 1981 at Cobram where Lieutenant Dan Wyborn was the troop leader at 2 Troop A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles (2TP A SQN 8/13 VMR). He completed the Initial Employment Training Course (IET) and then an M113A1 driver’s course in March 1982. Course Senior Instructor (SI) was Captain (CAPT) John McLean and wing instructor Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2) Mick Baxter (ex-Driving & Servicing Wing instructor at the School of Armour). He served with 2TP at Cobram as a trooper Driver/Signaller until June 1982 when he was selected for officer training. He served two years as an Officer Cadet in Course 21 at Officer Cadet Training Unit (OCTU) graduating in June 1984. He returned to 8/13 VMR and completed the 1/85 Army Reserve (ARES) Regimental Officers Basic Course (ROBC Reconnaissance), then was posted immediately as 1 TP LDR for the Hay Booligal Annual Field Exercise (AFX). In 1985 he took command of 2TP at Cobram until Nov 1987 when he transferred to C Squadron First Armoured Regiment (CSQN 1AR). This began six months full time duty in which Lieutenant (LT) Robertson completed the regular army 1/88 (ROBC Tank), and then served as CSQN's first and only ARES Leopard Tank TP LDR until the next ARES LT was trained up as 2TP LDR. He later served as the CSQN Liaison Officer (LO) on the First Brigade (1 Bde) exercise ‘Predators Advance’ and as a staff officer on a Second Division (2Div) exercise. In Jan 1991 he studied at the Reserve Command and Staff College (RCSC). Upon completion of Grade 3 he was promoted to CAPT and transferred back to a reconnaissance troop, 3TP VMR SQN 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse (4/19PWLH) at Wangaratta. CAPT Robertson transferred to the Inactive List in 1994, but in 2011 returned to the Active List serving as Operations Captain (OPS CAPT) at Regimental Headquarters (RHQ) 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers (12/16 HRL)and later Second-In-Command (2IC) Tamworth-based Operations Support Squadron (OPSPT SQN), and at 9 day exercises at Singleton range and an exercise at Townville High Range in Protective Mobility Vehicle (PMV) Bushmasters. In 2013 after completing the ARES Grade 3 Staff Officers course in Brisbane he returned home to Jerilderie and served as 2IC A SQN 4/19 PWLH based at Latchford Barracks Bonegilla. He was awarded the Defence Long Service Medal (DLSM) in 2014. Highlights of his career included being Parade Commander for the 75th anniversary Beersheba parade in Canberra on 31 October 1992. The guard, drawn from the VMR SQN 4/19 PWLH represented the 4th Light Horse Regiment, a participant of the Charge. Then twenty years later, 2012, he was invited to speak at the Quirindi Anzac Day ceremony. On this occasion he was serving with 12/16 HRL, so in two ceremonies, 20 years apart, he had represented both the 4th LHR and the 12th LHR, the two lead Regiments that charged Beersheba. CAPT Robertson was placed on the Inactive List again in 2015. Shows Mrs J. Brown, one of her four daughtrers and her two sons who died in World War One with their dog posing in front of fence of Headmaster's house, at Eltham State School, Dalton Street. Date circa 1902. The building still stands. Reproduced p66 of Pioneers & Painters Mrs Jane Elizabeth Brown (nee Staines) and three children of her large family who left the Headmaster's residence when John Brown (Headmaster 1889-1906) died (on the job) in 1906. John and Jane had ten children eight girls and two boys. Their two sons both died in the 1914-1918 War; George Stewart Brown (1885-1916) and John Leonard Brown (1887-1918). The young girl may be Elsie Maria Brown (1889-1917) which would date the photo around 1902. Wall Bros operated at St Kilda from around 1889 to 1903. John Brown died 23 Sept 1906 after a short severe illness at age 55 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (Evelyn Observer 28 Sep 1906 p2). The deceased gentleman was highly respected, and always took a lively and active interest in promoting the progress and prosperity of the district, and his loss will be much felt, He was only 55 years of age, and leaves a wife and large family to mourn their loss, and much sympathy is felt for them. The remains of the deceased were interred in the Box Hill cemetery on Wednesday afternoon last.
