Old Ballarat Pottery was set up by John Gilbert as part of the Old Ballarat Village, opposite Sovereign Hill. The name ‘Ruttledge’ may have no local significance thought the name ‘Rutledge’ is important in our history, commencing with William Rutledge who purchased the Farnham Special Survey in the 1840s( Tower Hill to Dennington). The name ‘Swinton’ is prominent in our history. Mrs John Swinton (Charlotte Scott nee Dunn, 1871-1944) was married to John Swinton, the son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854. William established a store in Timor Street in the 1850s and opened branches of this store in several local towns. The Swinton family still has commercial interests in Timor Street. This book is of interest because it belonged to Charlotte Swinton, a member of the Swinton family important in Warrnambool’s commercial and community history. This is a black leather-covered book of 656 pages plus a Supplement of Hymns of 32 pages. The cover has gold lettering on the front and the spine. The pages have a gilt edging. The album is a collection of items of interest, mainly newspaper cuttings, from 1982, 1983 and 1984. The folder contains information and records relating to the Warrnambool Bird Observers' Group and includes records relating to Lake Pertobe, Tower Hill, The Maam, Kelly's Swamp, Nirranda, Allansford, Timboon, and Port Fairy. They were collected by Jill Heathcote (1927-2011), a Dennington resident who was for many years a member of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society, the Warrnambool Bird Observers' Group and the Warrnambool Field Naturalists Group. The cuttings and bird records reflect her interest in both local history and natural history. These two items are of considerable interest, particularly to those interested in local natural history. The scanning of the items has been completed.1. One brown plastic folder sold commercially for the storage of photographs and documents. The cover has an ornamental gilt border. The folder contains 24 cardboard pages and plastic sheets. The pages are bound with two metal screws. Christ Church is the main Anglican Church in Warrnambool. The Anglican Church held services in Warrnambool from 1847 on and a Sunday School operated from that time. The building of Christ Church was commenced in the early 1850s with the tower and spire added in the 1880s. The program under study here was for the annual concert of the Anglican Sunday Schools in Warrnambool. The concert featured items from Christ Church Sunday School and two other local Sunday Schools from St. George’s, East Warrnambool (established 1906 and now closed) and St. Peter’s, South Warrnambool (established 1911 and closed in 1974). This item, though ragged, is of interest as an example of the type of entertainment featured at Sunday School concerts in Warrnambool during the 20th century. At that time Sunday Schools would have been important as the children of the adherents of most Protestant religions in the city would have attended a Sunday School which provided religious instruction and some social activities. The program contains the names of those participating in the concert and these are useful to researchers. This is a piece of paper folded in two to make four pages, three with typed material. The pages are now completely detached and are a little torn and crumpled. It is a program of a mid 20th century Warrnambool Christ Church Sunday School concert. It has probably been produced by church officials as it is not a professional printing job. Ballarat Railway Station photographed from Platform 2. The tower can be seen without the clock which was only installed after a fire in the 1980s. The B class diesels were the first mainline diesel locomotives built for the Victorian Railways, in 1952-3. They were unusual in having a streamlined drivers cab at each end. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga It is one of many souvenirs produced to represent landmarks in the Albury-Wodonga district. The Albury and District War Memorial was opened on Anzac Day 1925 by General Paine. Designed by the Architect Louis Harrison, the site was chosen by the town planner Charles Reade. The monument is a white ferro concrete tower, in the form of a tapered lighthouse painted stark white and surmounted by a 'torch of liberty'. This torch is 1.8 meters high and faced with 40 panes of prismatic glass. During the day sunlight plays through this glazing giving the torch the illusion it is lit.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. Henry Beater Christian (1886-1962) , was a descendant of one of the earliest settler families in Kew. Employed at the Kew Asylum as a 'public servant', he was a skilled amateur photographer, photographing numerous scenes in Kew and on his travels around Victoria. The majority of his photographs date from 1916 to 1929. His finest photographs are housed in two photograph albums. Digital copy of a photograph from page 3 of the 47-page photograph album containing 261 gelatinous silver images, loaned by Diane Washfold with permission given to digitise and hold a copy in our collection. This photograph is of a stretch of the Yarra near Macauley's Boat Sheds. In the distance, elevated above the river are the towers of the Kew Asylum. Henry B Christian developed his own photographs and often selected those he considered artistically fine for visual modification, such in this instance, where he used an oval framing technique in the development process. This album contains a collection of family photos, greeting cards and hand drawn floral emblems. Among the photographs are two which have details on them: a young girl named Margaret Clarke aged 8 1870 and another of Charles Alexander Clarke. The photographers are from many places including Britain, Melbourne, Portland and a number by Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke was one of Warrnambool’s more important photographers, operating a business for thirty years in the town. He also worked as an artist and taught art in local schools. He painted a number of versions of Tower Hill. He died in 1918 at the age of 91.This album shows a collection of photographs and cards which were important to families in the later part of the 19th century. It has artistic and historical significance, with the photographs in particular depicting many different styles of clothing and household details of the time. This insulator disk for the high voltage carrying electrical cables was manufactured in 1964 and used by the SEC Vic (Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme) from that date until late 1900's. It was used to connect high voltage cables to their "towers" going from various Hydro Generators to and from power "stations". During this time period, high quality "cable" insulators were manufactured in Japan. In an earlier time they would have been sourced from Europe or England. After the 1950's the sourcing of electrical hardware was being influenced by the lower costs obtainable from Japan. Later on other Asian sources also became available.The need for a mountainous and a large area of operational requirements, such as the SEC Vic Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme, to distribute the electricity produced in the Victorian Alps to the major users required power transmission lines to "carry" high above the sometimes inaccessible land mass electricity generated at the power stations to the various sub stations along the valleys and ranges to flatter populated regions. The significance of this insulation "high voltage" disk to the Kiewa Valley region relates to the impact of modern technology (at that time) upon a mainly rural environment. These power lines are a stark visual "show" of the impact that the "Scheme" has on the mostly rural landscape of the Kiewa Valley and what a boost of "modern" equipment into the area has taken place. The "Hydro Scheme" had facilitated the transition of a semi rural area to an advanced rural region within a shorter time frame, than would have taken under "normal" evolutionary time. The speed of information of all "new technology" had a relatively slow assimilation rate before the SEC Kiewa Hydro Scheme came to those living in the then quieter rural communities. This high voltage (330 KV) insulation disk is made from non conductive porcelain stoneware. It is highly polished brown in colour and has a clip fastening for the high voltage cable to be attached to. This disk was hit by lightning and the burn marks are quite noticeable. The top metal connector has a "mushroom" extension jutting below the semi cone like insulation disk. The City Fire Brigade tower painted white can be seen to the right, while St Andrew's Kirk dominates the middle ground of the photograph. George Edward Doery (was one of 3 children of William Henry Doery and wife Theodora M Bartholomew who were married in 1914 and resided from this time until c1963 at 16 Tower Street, Surrey Hills. The Doery family were stalwarts of the Canterbury Baptist Church. George graduated MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 1949. He married Mary Elizabeth Weller (1922-2004) in 1950. He joined the Mont Albert medical Group and practised there until his retirement, The photo was taken to mark his retirement and appeared in a local newspaper. He died 21/9/2011. This book is a 2015 transcription of a 1995 book by Helen Tolcher. It contains the story of the establishment in the 1870s of the Nappa Merrie station on the South Australian- Queensland border on the Coopers Creek. The station was established by John Conrick after he and three other men set off with 1600 cattle in 1872 from Koroit in Victoria, arriving at the new property site eleven months later. John Conrick (1852-1926) was the son of Patrick and Ellen Conrick who were farmers in the Tower Hill area. John Conrick had four sons who continued to run Nappa Merrie until family connections to the property ceased in 1960. This book is of interest as a record of the legend-making overland cattle droving feat by Koroit resident, John Conrick and three others in the early 1870s and of the establishment of an important property in Queensland following the overland trip. This is a soft cover book of 132 pages. The cover is multi-coloured with photographs of John Conrick and the Dig Tree site at Coopers Creek. The pages contain a preface, 19 chapters of text and an index. A small number of heavy cast iron weights and two rods remain at the Point Hicks Lightstation. These weights comprise one rod with a forked top and four circular weights attached to the bottom of the shaft. The weights and rods were part of the original clockwork mechanism that was fitted beneath the lens to keep the kerosene‐fuelled light turning. They were attached to a cable or chains and moved vertically in similar fashion to the way weights move on grandfather clocks. As the weight fell, the optic clock was driven and the lens was turned. To keep the clock turning, the weight needed to be wound back up to the top of its travel. The cables and weights in this lighthouse were visible as they moved through the length of the tower up to the lantern room. It was usual for systems to move inside a tube extending up to the top, but in this case the tower’s cast iron spiral staircase, which is supported on cantilever cast iron brackets set into the concrete wall, spiralled around the space in which they moved. Lighthouse keepers had the arduous job of having to constantly wind the clock to keep the light active, and at least two keepers needed to observe a strict roster of hours. When electric motors were invented, all of this became redundant and the motors were able to turn the optic for as long as there was power to drive them. In December 1964, the original 1890 Chance Bros kerosene‐fuelled light and clockwork mechanism were replaced by small electric motor, and the number of keepers reduced to two. The six circular weights and rods originate from the obsolete system and may have been part of a larger set. Wilsons Promontory retains seven of its original set of ten weights, all of which are detached from the tower’s weight tube. Cape Schanck has a set of fourteen weights remaining in situ as well as another four detached weights, which have inscriptions. One weight is displayed in the lantern room at Cape Otway. The image shows four of the clockwork weights attached to a rod with a forked top. They were part of the original clockwork mechanism that was fitted beneath the lens to keep the kerosene‐fuelled light turning. The Aldis lamp in its case sits on the floor next to the weights. Source: Parks Victoria.The Point Hicks weights have first level contributory significance for the insights they provide into the superseded technology and operations of a late nineteenth century lighthouse. They are well provenanced and are significant for their historic value as part of the lightstation’s Chance Brothers optical system installed in 1890. Four circular metal weights are stored on a metal rod with a forked section at the top. The weights have a cut out section which allows the weights to be removed easily.

The purpose of the annual Port Melbourne Holy Trinity Church Queen and King competition was to raise Parish funds. The ceremony held on Saturday 28th November 1931 was to Crown Miss Dulcie SMITH as the Carnival queen. As Queen of the Sunday School, she gained the most votes. On the church tower each day leading to the crowning a coloured flag was flown representing the group which was currently leading in the voting. the flying of the orange flag announced Dulcie's win.
