The Book - Purple Devils, a History of 2/6 Australian..., a History of 2/6 Australian Commando Squadron, ISBN 064607125-4 ...The 2/6th Commando Squadron (Australia) was one of 12 independent companies or commando squadrons raised by the Australian Army during WW2. The 2/6th served in four major campaigns - Kokoda, Buna, Markham-Ramu and Borneo and was involved in the Battle of Kaiapit. Late in the WW2 hostilities 2/6th Commando Squadron was at Balikpapan and attached to 25th Brigade to provide support to the Brigade - reconnaissance patrols, fighting patrols, ambushes and humanitarian assistance to local inhabitants. The 2/6th Commando Squadron was disbanded in 1946. The Sword returned to Australia with a member of 2/6th Commando Squadron VX132826 W G H Burrell. The Book Purple Devils was written by Syd Trigellis Smith in his retirement, he had served during WW2 with 2/2 Field Regiment in New Guinea.VX132826 W G H Burrell served with the AIF during WW2 in New Guinea and posted to 2/6th Commando Squadron and was on Borneo and at Balikpapan. George Burrell was able to being back the sword at the end of hostilities. The HMAS Australia (D84) was a County-class heavy cruiser of the Royal Australian Navy. The HMAS Australia (D84) was Commissioned in 1928 and de Commissioned in 1954. These photographs show the ship during her service in the Leyte Gulf and Lingayen Gulf 1944 - 1945.A colour photograph of HMAS Australia (D84) in a gold colour frame. Contents: Ely family tree Frederick Ely was born in Cowlinge Suffolk, in 1838. (His parents were George Ely b1793 and Sarah Poulter b1792, both born in Cowlinge. Frederick came to Australia on the ship 'Ocean Monarch' in 1856 with (most likely) his brother George, aged 34, his wife Elizabeth Piper, aged 22, and daughters Elizabeth, aged 2, and Harriet, aged 1. George and his family settled in the Harcourt area of Victoria, as did his brothers William and Henry. In 1857, Henry, his wife Mary Anne (Parker) and a daughter came to Australia, and settled in Greensborough for a short time, then moved to Harcourt, taking a large amount of apple tree cuttings and plants from Greensborough, where he, brother William, William Eagle, a childhood friend from Cowlinge, and a Nathan Vick, planted and stated apple orchids.History of the origins of this Greensborough family.20-page plastic binder, spiral bound, clear cover. History of the origins of this Greensborough family and the family tree of James Chapman (1805-1875) and Susan Palmer (1808-1895). James Chapman, his wife Susan and all his family including his son-in-law William Poulter left the Port of London in November 1848 on board the 'Francis Ridley' of 536 tons on her maiden voyage to Australia and Bombay India. The Master of the ship was Henry Hudson. VX46562 N J Richmond enlisted in 2AIF on 12 July 1940 and discharged on 04 December 1945, he was Posted to 2/9 Field Ambulance. After December Leave in this Unit left Australia on 3 February 1941 and arrived in Singapore on the 18 February 1941. On 10 April 1942 VX46562 N J Richmond was reported Missing and on 02 November 1943 was Listed at POW. XV46562 N J Richmond returned to Australia on 15 October 1945. George Cox was in Gibraltar with the British Navy when he heard about "gold" in Australia. In his latter days, as the mailman, he was granted a fisherman's license which enabled him to build a hut on the foreshore below the Isle of Wight and eastward of the Jetty.
