Orbost & District Historical Societymenu, 1912
This item is an invitation to a dinner given by the Shire President and Mrs Hugh Cameron for the State Governor and Lady Fuller to be held in the Orbost Shire Hall on November 19, 1912. The governor and his wife left Melbourne on November 14 on a visit to East Gippsland. Hugh Cameron (1850-1921) was on the Orbost Shire council from 1892-1915. (more info. in O.D.H.S. newsletter -Tambo Shire) The Shire of Orbost was a local government area about 380 kilometres east of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres (3,608.9 sq mi), and existed from 1892 until 1994. Originally, Orbost was part of the Bairnsdale Road District which was created on 30 April 1867. Splitting away as part of the Shire of Tambo in 1882, Orbost was first incorporated as a shire in its own right as the Shire of Croajingolong on 30 May 1892. It received its present name on 17 February 1893. On 3 January 1913 part of its western riding was annexed to Tambo as its Cunninghame Riding. On 2 December 1994, the Shire was abolished, and merged with City and Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Tambo, most of Shire of Omeo and the Boole Boole Peninsula from Shire of Rosedale into the Shire of East Gippsland. This item is associated with Orbost Shire Council which no longer exists. It is also associated with Hugh Cameron.A small menu on a cream folded card with blue print. This poster would heve been handed out to businesses for display. Produced by the Orbost and east Gippsland Agricultural Society, it was for the twenty-fourth Orbost Show. It was endorsed by the president, Mr Jac. Perry and the secretary, Mr Geo. D. Perry. This item was donated as a display item for the Slab Hut (Orbost Information Centre). Quadruple silverplate items were four times as heavily plated with silver as standard items. Quadruple plate hollowware was some of the highest quality made during the latter part of the 19th century.This item clearly has an aesthetic significance as silver cake baskets were a common sight in upper-class households in the 18th and early 19th centuries.A silver plated cake plate on a pedestal with a handle. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893. The site of the factory was purchased at a cost of five pounds from Mr James Cameron. (See In Times Gone By - Deborah Hall) The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893 and was an important source of income to the Orbost district.A time sheet book. The Lochiel barn was used as the church for all denominations until 1885 when the parishioners were offered the use of a school room, then used the Mechanics' Hall after it was built in 1887. Mr James Cameron, fostered the developing Church, not only by allowing his barn at Lochiel Park to be used for Church services but also by making a home there for Mr Martin ,First Church of England clergyman stationed at Orbost - 1884-1891 over a period of years, until a small Vicarage was built on the spot where the present church stands. From Mr Cameron’s barn the church migrated to the school building erected in the main street and thence after a short time to the Mechanics Hall, built in 1887. This item is reminiscent of the late 19th - mid 20th centuries when church-going was more common.A very old black / white photograph of a house with a barn in the background. This iron would have been used locally. Wehner's Blacksmith's was founded at Orbost in 1889. Oswald Wehner began working in 1910 with his father. In 1947 Ossie's son, Tom started blacksmithing, working alongside his father. Wehner's closed in 1991. (ref. Won in 1920 at a raffle for the Mechanics Hall, Orbost.A celluloid kewpie doll with painted eyebrows and eyes and smile, wearing a tulle land ribbon skirt/dress. The doll's joints are held together with elastic. Its hands and feet are not naturalistic and its legs are moulded together. The first meeting to form an Agricultural society in Orbost was convened by the then Orbost Progress Association and held in the Mechanics Hall on Saturday, 10th October 1891. Its first show was held on 3rd March 1904...on a site alongside the Bonang Road where the present Golf Club stands. It is currently held at the Recreation Reserve at Newmerella. These roof nails are from the Orbost Butter Factory which was on the corner of Lochiel and Browning Streets, Orbost. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co Ltd was registered on June 1st 1893. 3134.2 has been taken inside the Mechanics Institute hall. 3134.3 was taken in Munro Street. Cr J. Perry was the president of the organising committee for the Back To Orbost celebrations in March 1937. M.W. Cowell was the Secretary.These photographs are pictorial records of a significant community event in Orbost's history.Three black / white photographs and an envelope. 3134.1 is of a group standing in front of a banner - WELCOME HOME - and a welcome arch - 3-3-1937. A group of men, women and children are standing or sitting in front of the arch. 3134.2 is of a large group of men and women seated and standing dressed in formal outfits in front a stage inside a hall. 3134.3 is of two men in a jinker pulled by one horse. The person holding the reins appears to be wearing a false beard and wig. 3143.4 is an unused white envelope. On the left-hand side in brown print circle is a boomerang with "Back To Orbost 1937", two corn cobs and pumpkins. These photographs were taken on November 25, 1976 at the official opening of the current Snowy River road bridge. Included in the photographs are: John Duggan; Pat Hall, C.R.B. chairman, R.E.V. Donaldson (3240.7) and J.A.Rafferty, the state minister for Transport, who cut the ribbon (3240.8). Di Young and Cheryl Dusting (3240.9) distributed souvenir information pamphlets to official guests. The Snowy River road bridge is one of four built as part of the 8.4 km project spanning the Orbost flood plains. The Snowy River bridge and another over the nearby Ashbys Gulch are among the 10 longest bridges in Victoria, being the eighth and fifth longest respectively. The new bridge removed through traffic from Orbost township crossing the Snowy River 45 m downstream of the old bridge.This bridge is the fourth to provide a crossing to the township of Orbost.
