Prior to this he had attended Williamstown North State School then Williamstown High School. He changed to Footscray Technical School as he was less interested in the academic subjects and more interested in technical subjects. He chose Engineering as it gave access to Diploma Courses and tertiary studies. This enabled him to enter the University of Melbourne and do a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering - 1945, 1946, and 1947. In 1948 he did a Diploma in Education at Melbourne University. From this path he was able to follow a career in teaching and his first appointment was at the School of Mines in Ballarat, (SMB) 1949. He became the first Vice Principal of SMB in 1960 and then Principal in 1964 to 1976. From 1976 to his retirement in 1987, he was the Foundation Director of Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). Solid wooden box with rope handles was used to move library books from the Library at Ballarat School of Mines to the E J Barker Library at Mount Helen Campus. The Mount Helen Campus Library was opened in 1973. At that time it was Ballarat Institiute of Adult Education. This was the fore runner of what is now Federation University. The SMB library was in the Ballarat Gaol Building. This was demolished and the new E J Tippett Library was built on the site in 1977.Wooden book box with rope handles.Sticker with 8 on each end. World War One honor roll of former students of the Happy Valley State School No 376 who enlisted. The original honor roll no longer exists. There is a framed photograph of it in the current Happy Valley School building now used for community events. This honor roll would appear to be made before the end of WW1 as Ernest Alfred Yung died in September 1917 at Ypres. His brother George Alfred Yung returned who was also in the same battle returned to Australia. Honour rolls were also made to encourage more men to enlist. Margaret Young studied at Ballarat West Art School in 1894. This was one of Ballarat's Art schools. In 1907 they merged and became Ballarat Technical Art School (BTAS). Margaret became a teacher and taught for many years at BTAS, specialising in woodcarving. At the end of the First World War, Honour Boards were requested to be made to honour the men who had served. Ballarat was the main provider of these boards. Margaret Young was one of the people responsible for the carvings and specially mentioned for her work by the Caulfield School in Melbourne. On her resignation, Margaret moved to Adelaide. At the past students Reunion Celebrations in 1930, Margaret Young was to be the Guest of Honour. Unfortunately she was unable to attend due to ill health. Andrew John BALSILLIE MBE, JP. Jack as he was known enlisted in the Australian Army near the end of WWII No 31224 age 16 years. He then served in Malaya 1959 - 1961then Vietnam with the rank of Captain with 1st Aust Task Force HQ Light Aid Detachment (LAD) 7.5.1969 - 7.11.1969, HQ Aust Force Vietnam Army component 8.11.1969 - 7.5.1970. He retired with the rank of Major in 1985 after 40 years plus. He was awarded an MBE in 1969 for his services to the Australian War Memorial. Elected to Committee Bendigo RSL 1988 - 1993 with Snr Vice President 1989 - 1993, re-elected 1999 - 2000. Re-elected again in 2002 as Snr Vice President. A plane table compass, sometimes referred to as a trough compass, used by surveyors and artillery crew to accurately establish magnetic north. The compass is precision machined of brass material with a long needle to ensure accuracy. The compass scale is marked with a centre zero (for magnetic north) and graduations indicating plus and minus five degrees. The compass is housed in a protective wooden case with a sliding lid. The lid has a brass slide which locks the compass needle during periods when the compass is not in use. This compass is the type used by an artillery unit of the Australian Military Forces during World War 2. This compass was manufactured by J. W. Handley P/L of Melbourne in 1943. Refer 00330 and 00330.2The side of the compass body is stamped: "J.W.H." with the letter "V" under a line, "SERIAL No 1082", MARK.II-D^D-1943". Tobacco cutters were important tools for pipe smokers until self-made or manufactured cigarettes began to dominate the tobacco sales market from the 1920s. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was invented in Italy in the late 1930s. ECT is a medical treatment most commonly used in patients with severe major depression or bipolar disorder that has not responded to other treatments. Psychiatrists had already discovered that inducing seizures could relieve symptoms of mental illness. Before ECT, this was done with the use of chemicals, usually one called Metrazol. The traditional scale consists of two plates or bowls suspended at equal distances from a fulcrum. One plate holds an object of unknown mass (or weight), while known masses are added to the other plate until static equilibrium is achieved and the plates level off, which happens when the masses on the two plates are equal. This small, portable 1930’s Sanax First Aid in Accidents Kit has been strongly constructed, the case reinforced with metal to take knocks and bumps as it was transported to the site of an emergency. Having these supplies organised into a kit made them easily accessible and reduces time to take them to the accident site. The text of the printed brand “Sanax - First Aid” embossed on the lid. In Aradale Mental Hospital and J Ward, people are well aware of the institutions remoteness and of the importance of quick treatment when accidents occur. However, prior to the first commercial First Aid Kit being produced in 1888 by Johnson & Johnson, there was limited knowledge about treating injuries and about medical supplies to have ready for emergencies. A quote from Johnson’s & Johnson’s 1888 price list states, “It is a fact ... that many lives are lost and much suffering entailed in such accidents on account of the lack of the simple but necessary articles required to afford prompt assistance to the wounded.” [cited Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village]The kit is significance because it illustrates the first aid paraphernalia used in the care of staff and patients at Aradale Mental Hospital and J Ward. With the advent of electricity, so to came the invention of the Electrocardiograph Machine. This piece of medical equipment gave nursing staff and doctors a more precise indication of a patients heart beat and was used extensively across Victoria's medical institutions. Microscope were essential medical tools in diagnosing blood and tissue samples of patients. Microscopes were used at Ararat Mental Hospital from the time of its opening. The microscope is significant as an example of medical equipment used at the mental institution in the 1800's.This microscope sits in an flat tripod, much like the American style foot. It has an inclination joint. The mirror is on a double jointed arm, allowing oblique illumination and above stage illumination of opaque objects. The substage ring fitting can be removed to allow for extremely oblique lighting. Removing the ring is easy as it is fixed by a simple bayonet arrangement. Many microscopes had a bullseye condenser which attached to the stage, but this is lacking in this example, perhaps because the mirror can articulate above the stage. Coarse focus is by straight rack and pinion, fine by micrometer screw acting on the stem. There is an extendable drawtube which extends to allow optimal use of the objectives and a single objective and ocular are present.
