Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser dated 29/5/1873. Mr. A. M. McHugh, Surveyor of Admiralty Dep't fell down the Golden Fleece Shaft on 28/5/73. The undergr'd Manager, Mr. Thomas Mann, was showing him around. They had been at the 300 ft level and the cage was below them. Mann knocked for the cage which stopped about four feet above the plat. Mann knocked the cage down, but it stopped about 10' or 12' above the plat. Mann said the cage had not stopped, and before he could remove his hand from the knocker, he saw Mr. McHugh fall down the shaft. He died. Four photographs framed together to produce a panorama. The four photographs were taken from the slope of the Ballarat School of Mines where the Wesley Church now stands. When joined they gave a panoramic view of one of the world’s richest alluvial goldfields. The town you see had over 50,000 people. Bridge Street on the left is well established. The crude pans and cradles of the early “diggers’ were already giving way to steam power and the deep shafts of the “miners”. Money and machinery were needed to get to the deeper leads, and the smoke stacks of the great company mines can be seen across the photo. The waterloo mines was one of the first deep shafts and was sunk at the foot of the Dana Street hill. A tilt-top Sphairistike lawn tennis racquet, with solid concave throat, leather crown protector, and white leather handle grip wrapped along almost the whole length of the shaft. Impressed inscription along throat and shaft on obverse: FRENCH & CO./46 CHURTON ST./LONDON/SPHAIRISTIKE. This historical racquet was literally one of the first lawn tennis racquets - sold as part of a lawn tennis set - to be produced by French & Co., upon the order of Major Wingfield, in anticipation of the patenting and publication of his game rules. Once the patent was granted, Wingfield had his rules published in two days, and had copies slipped into the already constructed French & Co. tennis sets, and from that point, the lawn tennis craze began. Cart was operated by the Briagolong Rabbit Suppression League. It was purchased by the donor at the clearing sale for Jim Kelly in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Jim was the son of the main organiser of the Briagolong Rabbit Suppression League. Copies of the Minutes and accounts have been obtained, and are catalogued separately. Wood on cart was in much degraded condition, whole cart repaired by George Parker of the Stratford and District Historical Society, 2010.Rabbit poison cart by T.H. Hicks of Sydney. Consists of wooden frame and floor 80cm high, wheels with cast iron hubs. Chain-driven from one wheel, operator's seat at rear, with a lever mechanism to control the trench forming attachment. Part of a set of laparoscopy equipment donated by Dr Geoff Bishop. Dr Geoffrey Bishop, whilst at the Department of O and G, University of Liverpool, UK, began laparoscopy in 1969. On returning to Australia, Bishop and Grimwade together with Mr Peter Paterson introduced gynaecological laparoscopy to Melbourne, practising at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital (QVMH), Melbourne in 1969. The College, through the Victorian State Committee of the Australian Council, RCOG, ran training courses in laparoscopy for local and interstate gynaecologists. These were conducted by Bishop, Grimwade and Paterson. They established protocols, with particular reference to safety, for the conduct of laparoscopy. Laparoscopy was used initially for diagnosis and for limited treatment using diathermy for conditions such as endometriosis. The real impetus came with the great upsurge of tubal sterilization in the early 1970s. Early techniques included diathermy and division of the Fallopian tubes using the Palmer forceps. [Dr Peter Renou, former honorary curator.] This object was used by Dr Geoff Bishop during gynaecological laparoscopic surgery. This instrument is commonly used for suction. It is also used for testing tubal patency by inserting dye through it. Cannula. Consists of a slender shaft with fittings at each end. There are two points for tubal attachments at one end, set into separate small metal tubes at ninety degrees to each other. At the other end, there is a bell cap enclosing a curved nozzle. The nozzle is punctured with six small holes. Manufacturers stamp on plate near the attachment points reads 'PRECIOUS'.infertility, gynaecology
