This compact was owned by Rose Alice Normington, nee Lupton. She was born in Roto, NSW in 1880 and moved to Victoria with her parents and siblings when she was five years old. They settled in Barker's Creek via Castlemaine. In 1899 Rose married Maurice Normington Jnr who also lived in Barker's Creek. They had six daughters and one son. Rose Normington died in 1966. Information provided by Pam Strijder 2017 - granddaughter of Rose Normington. I think this compact would originate from early in the twentieth century, based on the fact that it contains a zipper.This compact is an example of a high-quality compact which it is thought would be widely owned by ladies early in the twentieth century.Round, black leather lady's powder compact with embroidered top. In 1877 the Victorian Infant Asylum was founded in Kew. In 1881, the asylum relocated to Berry Street in East Melbourne. By 1908, it was called the Foundling Hospital and Infants Home. It was non-denominational and controlled by a committee of management. By 1956, Berry Street consisted of a Mothercraft Training Centre and two main residential units: Berry Street for infants aged zero to 18 months, and Vale Street for toddlers aged zero to two years old. In August 1956, Berry Street was declared an approved category 2 Children's Home. In 1960, Vale Street was converted to an adult nursing home. In 1964, the name was changed to Berry Street Babies Home and Hospital. Berry Street was also an approved adoption agency. By 1968, Berry Street comprised the Training School for Mothercraft Nurses, the adoption agency, an infant life-protection house, a long-stay home for children to three years of age (the toddlers’ wing) and a small house for unmarried mothers. The home's infant life-protection work was seen as a critical agency function, particularly where family illness was putting pressure on mothers and Berry Street was able to provide respite and support. By the late 1960s, 30–40 adoptions annually were being arranged from Berry Street. By 1974 the home's orientation had shifted. Four family group homes had been established (two in Burwood, one in Ashburton and one in St Kilda), the mothercraft training function had been phased out, the toddlers wing converted to day care, and the main building (containing the nursery, administration, kitchen, dining room and single mothers accommodation) was demolished in favour of four home units, which housed 24 children, supervised by cottage parents. Berry Street provided short term, emergency and residential care for 'protection of infant' cases and state wards. Two flats were also established for short-term family accommodation. The nurses’ home was converted to house the home’s administration function and a social work service. The social work service coordinated family aid and family counselling services, and a neighbourhood house. In 1975 Berry Street also provided short-term care for 42 Vietnamese children brought to Australia in the official government-sponsored airlift. In 1976 Berry Street made application to change its category 2 Children's Home classification to category 1, as it was now catering for a wider range of children. It had ceased to be a babies’ home and hospital, and had started providing child and family care, including residential care. In 1977 Berry Street to established a family group home in Richmond to house children affected by the closure of St Cuthbert's Children's Home in Colac. Berry Street changed its name to Berry Street Child and Family Care in 1977. In 1978, the range of services provided by Berry Street Child and Family Care consisted of a social work counselling service, a financial aide, a family aide program using volunteers, two temporary accommodation units each housing eight children, an information and referral service, a neighbourhood house in Richmond, a day care centre for 36 children, and four family group homes. In 1980–81 the family group homes in Burwood were sold and the resources moved to the Richmond area. In 1994, Sutherland Youth and Family Services Inc. amalgamated into Berry Street Inc. During the 1990s, Berry Street combined with the Sutherland Community Resource Centre in Watsonia in Melbourne’s northern region. Diary was owned by Evelyn White and was found in the estate of Neil Russell. It was donated to Museum Victoria in 2006 by Neil's son, Barry. MV passed on the diary to Southern Sherbrooke Historical Society who kept it after ascertaining that Healesville Historical Society didn't want it.A leatherbound diary with closing flap and press stud closure, and an expanding pocket at the front. There is a pencil holder. The first 254 pages have been torn out. Pages 255 to 318 have printed information of benefit to GPs. The remaining pages, 1-150, are a diary plus engagements list. There are pencil scribble marks on some pages. Handwritten lists of women patients and dates, presumably when women gave birth. Also lists of patients and death dates. 'Healesville' is mentioned alongside some names.

This photograph depicts a MDNS Sister visiting a male patient to give him nursing care. He is lying in bed in his home and the Sister is applying a bandage to his left wrist. Under her white gown the Sister is wearing the MDNS winter uniform of a grey dress with peaked collars and grey wool beret which has a central red Maltese cross attached. The Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885, provided wound care to their patients who ranged in age from the very young to the elderly. The patients required their wounds to be dressed following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, cancer, leg ulcers etc. As research developed better products and dressing materials, the methods and medication applied to wounds changed. MDNS received Royal patronage in 1966 and as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), the Education department developed wound care programs, such as the Leg Ulcer Management Program to provide their Trained nurses (Sister) with methods of best quality care. They ran a program for Wound Care Specialists who made assessments and provided advice and support to the District Sisters working in the field as needed. The Sisters liaised with the patient’s Doctors and hospitals to provide information on the progress of patient’s wounds and to receive any change of wound care from the Doctors. Standing on the left of this photograph is a Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS) Sister who is wearing a white gown over her grey uniform, the collar of which can be seen. She is wearing her uniform grey wool beret over her short dark curly hair and is smiling as, with her outstretched left hand, she supports the partly bandaged extended left arm of a gentleman who is sitting up in bed to her right; his right arm is resting on the bed and supporting him as he is partly turned towards the Sister. She has part of a rolled bandage in her right hand. The male patient, who has short dark hair, is looking at the camera and smiling. He is wearing a white and striped pyjama top and his lower body is covered by a patterned bed cover. Part of a pillow with check pillow case sits flat behind him and part of a wooden horizontal slat bedhead is seen. On the wall behind the bed hangs a framed photograph of a couple on their wedding day. Correspondence between Aaron Beattie Esq from Beattie Physical Culture College Melbourne and E. Hilmer Smith Esq about Girls’ Physical Culture Classes in July 1928. It was intended to aid the Sydney Legacy Club establish classes for girls. Excerpts include the following information: "I would suggest that you form a special C/tee to handle the Physical Culture work. . . . I would suggest that special care be taken to see that none but fully-qualified and trained teachers handle the children - this is all important. . . . We charge every child 5/- per year, payable quarterly. We have been most fortunate here with the girls section. An old friend of mine - Mrs Gillies - is our Hon. Directress. She was - until her marriage - in charge of all Physical Culture training in the State Schools of Victoria, and is a wonderful woman. She takes complete charge, appoints her own staff and so on. We pay some of her assistants from £2.2.0 to £5.5.0 per term of 12 weeks. The class was formed in May last year with 42 girls - we now have 121, and they have left the boys far behind. Enclosed you will find a copy of our measurement chart, which is an important part - every child should be recorded before starting, and again at the end of the year. I am also sending you a copy of our Demonstration Programme. This show was given after the girls had been going for 10 months, and it was a wonderful success - all these things help to bring success, and children seem to want these things to keep them going. . . . We spend about £600 per year on our Children's Work and nearly all of that goes to the Physical Culture side." The correspondence is a good snapshot of the undertaking of Melbourne Legacy running girls' club at that point in time and that Melbourne Legacy was trying to help Sydney Legacy establish a similar program. Two legatees with James Tierney and his Corps of Commissionaires service medal. The notes on the back infer that Legatees were involved in the commemoration of James Tierney's life by arranging his burial at sea. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. He also became one of the two Commissionaires at the Shrine of Remembrance for 12 years up to 1953. The service medal he is receiving in the photo comes from the Corps of Commissionaires Association (Australia), which has information at http://www.thecorps.com.au. A summary: "The Corps of Commissionaires was founded in London 1859 by Sir Edward Walter KCB. The original aim was to provide to employment and welfare support for veterans of the Crimean War. The Corps of Commissionaires was established in Australia in New South Wales in 1939 and became based in Victoria in 1946. There are Corps members in all states in Australia from all three Australian military services. Our members range from World War 2 veterans through all conflicts to Timor and Peacekeepers. The Corps is currently an ex-service, welfare and philanthropic organisation that is located at the Veterans Centre in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Victoria." The details of the three legatees mentioned are: Legatee Samuel J. Benson (Lieut.Commander) – born 12.7.1909, inducted 17 October, 1950, died 26.7.95. Served in WWII with the RAN for 6 years. He was a Junior Legatee before the war, and Legacy found him a job in the office of an Adelaide Shipping Company. After the war he became a Master Mariner, Sea Pilot. He was proposed as a Legatee by Stan Savige. Legatee Donald J. Simonson (Captain) – born 21.5.1920, inducted 27 July 1953, died 11.7.2010. Served in WWII in 39th Battn., Decorated with M.C. Worked as an Importer and Manufacturers Agent after the war. President of Melbourne Legacy 1970. Legatee Adrian Beattie (Captain) – born 21.3.1920, inducted 10.10.1950, died 8.8.1989. Served as a Signal Officer in 24th Btn.
