Alex was the brother of Frank Wright who was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. There were several small private hospitals in Orbost in the early 20th century. Babies were born at these private hospitals and mostly only a midwife attended as the doctor could be away on horseback treating another patient. As the new Orbost and District Hospital ( officially opened June 30th, 1930) developed and its facilities grew private hospitals closed. By the 1930's in Victoria there was an increase in the demand for beds in public hospitals by those who found private hospital costs prohibitive and wanted the higher standard of care provided in public hospital . This meant that many small private hospitals closed. It is a very important research tool for those studying and writing the history of Warrnambool. This copy has the names, ‘Murdoch Macdonald’, ‘D. Drynoch’ and ‘John Hyland’. Nothing is known about the first two people except that Murdoch Macdonald was the donor of the booklet but John Hyland was a well-known 19th century identity in Warrnambool – a policeman, a Council rate collector and an auctioneer. This is soft cover booklet of 71 pages plus several pages of a gardener’s almanac and advertisements. The original cover is missing and has been replaced by a plain piece of cream cardboard which is attached with a metal pin. The front and back pages are partly torn away and some pages of advertisements may be missing. There is a typed note on the inside front cover regarding the first Standard Almanac of 1875. Book was given to Mr Robert 'Bob' Edward Mitchell in 1938. Mr Mitchell trained as a wool classer in the 1930's and was awarded this book as the senior prize. Mr. Mitchell grew up on the Moorabinda sheep property and is on the honour roll as a past student who served in World War II from Wharparilla West State School.Large black bound book containing 12 double-sided pages, each with several wool samples mounted to a blue paper with the name of sheep breed which the wool came from. Each page also has a loose sheet of wax paper over the wool. Book can be closed and secured with a length of black material which can be tied up.

The Melbourne Electric Supply Co. operated a Power Station in Richmond and provided power to the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust and the Hawthorn Tramways Trust. They also provided power to Geelong and operated the Geelong Tramway system. MESCo Geelong and Richmond operations were taken over the SECV in 1930. The book gives the requirements for wiring of building and switchboard. Yields information on the electrical requirements that electricians were required to work to where MESCo supplied electricity. Moira Bird Oliver (nee Good) daughter of Rev Good of St Jude's Carlton first met Frank Oliver circa 1915. They were engaged for some 7 years while Frank did wartime service and then on return to Melbourne completed a Theology degree at Trinity College and was then ordained. They married on the 18th of July 1925 at St Jude's Church in Carlton. Frank Oliver was then naval chaplain on the HMAS Platypus. After various postings the married couple eventually arrived and were appointed to the Chaplaincy to the Mission to Seamen based at 717 Flinders St from 1930-1960. The Olivers weathered many significant issues between 1930 and 1960, a depression, WW2, strikes and waterfront unrest in the 1950s and financial struggles resulting from changed shipping patterns. This photograph was gifted by a descendant who told us that Mrs Oliver was a very enthusiastic photographer. Mrs Oliver was a well loved and respected woman and is memorialised by a window in the Mission Chapel. It is possible she is one of the many anonymous photographers who contributed various photographs especially of the 1930s and forties that make up a substantial part of the Mission Heritage Collection. Ministry was as Wesleyan Home Missionary ?–1897; Congregational churches – Dover (Tas) 1897-1907; Tamar St Launceston 1907-1909; Devonport 1909-1914; Gatton (Qld) 1915-?; Redcliffe (Qld) 1921-1927; Beechworth (Vic) 1927-1930; Hughesdale 1930-1934. Was a Wesleyan lay preacher at Allandale and Woodbridge (Tas). Obituary - "… For ten years carried on an energetic evangelistic ministry, riding his horse over the roughtest roads in his scattered district, which was 25 miles long, and visiting even the southern-mosst home in the island (Tasmania)" As a Wesleyan Home Missionary he was not allowed to marry. The Congregationalists had no such restrictions so he joined the Congregational Church and married his Emily. A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, 11-18 January 1969, at Lord Somers Camps. Big camp was for older Junior Legatees. This photo shows 27 people who took part. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring near the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays.
