About the Window - The window in this photograph, once known as the Dr Connell Memorial Window, was a feature of an external wall adjacent to the Women’s and Children’s Wards of Warrnambool Hospital. Honorary Doctors had played a significant role in the operation of the hospital between the years 1900 to 1939. One of these doctors was Dr. Connell, who passed away in 1928. The green glass memorial nameplate has an inscription that dedicates the window to Dr. Connell. The inscription reads: "A tribute to Egbert John Connell M.B.B.S. who for 30 years rendered devoted and valuable service to this institution. Obiit April 4th 1928, A.D." The 150th celebrations of Eltham Primary School included the launch of this book to commemorate the event, titled "We Did Open a School in Little Eltham". The title is taken from a line in a letter from first head teacher David Clark who opened his first private school in a bark hut. This publication of some 262 pages far exceeds the standard of most school commemorative histories, both in content and presentation. The three joint writers are all parents of students at the school. Ian Anderson, Barry Carozzi and Tarja Fellowes have spent many months researching and writing. When the First World War broke out, Australian men from all backgrounds and professions were called to serve their country.  Members of the Victorian Police force were some of the first to answer the call with twenty men joining the first convoy of soldiers who left Australian shores in October 1914. Over the course of four long years, one hundred and thirty-eight Victorian Police enlisted from stations across the state. Of these, twenty-seven lost their lives. Whilst the fate of each man was different, a deep commitment to protecting and serving the public was common to all. HENRY SMERDON (Harry) HOLMES was born in 1897 at the family property, ’Sauchieburn’, 17 km north of Ballarat, in the Ascot district. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Henry joined the Holmes family farming interests. At the age of 18 he enlisted and served with AIF in Egypt, France and Belgium 1915-1918. Henry served at the famous battlegrounds of Ypes and Somme in the Australian Army 8th Battalion. He was a Driver with the 4th D.A.C. The postcard is of "The Ascot" boys. Cameron Stewart Baird, VC, MG was a soldier in the Australian Army who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia, the highest award in the Australian honours system. The practice of wearing emu plumes in hats began with the Queensland Mounted Infantry. It is thought to have begun when the unit was engaged in suppression of the Shearers’ Strike of 1891. It remained a Queensland tradition till 1915 when other AIF units of the Light Horse began to do the same. After some dispute and discussion, the practice was approved provided the soldiers paid for their own plumes. Some regiments did not take up plumes: 6th and 7th LH continued to wear wallaby fur puggarees; 4th LH refused plumes because of the association with anti-unionism. The post-war militia adopted plumes and today all Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) regiments wear emu plumes in slouch hats. In the 1950s 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles and some other RAAC regiments wore an emu plume tuft behind the regimental badge on black berets. This brief case was used by the secretary of the Association till its closure in 1980s, when it was passed to the 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles Heritage Collection with other regimental memorabilia. The 13th Australian Light Horse Regiment (AIF) was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in March 1915. Following service at Gallipoli the regiment was broken up with squadrons going to France as Divisional Cavalry Squadrons of 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions. The regiment was reformed as firstly 1st Anzac Corps Mounted Troops and later Australian Corps Mounted Troops. James Alexander Nicholl was born 1878 at Ballarat Victoria. He served four years with the 3rd Regiment Victorian Colonial Forces, receiving his commission as an officer after two years. On 1 May 1900, as a 22 year old lieutenant, he sailed with the 4th Victorian Imperial Regiment to South Africa serving there under Colonel NW Kelly for fifteen months. Upon his return to Australia he resumed service with the now, Australian Light Horse. He was adjutant of the 16th (Indi) Light Horse located in northeast Victoria when WWI began. He volunteered for the AIF and was appointed to ‘C’ Squadron 13th Light Horse with the rank of Captain. Nicholl served at Gallipoli, France and UK, returning to Australia in 1919. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The man is Alfred Charles Bignell (1890-1965), dairyman of 6 Parring Road, Balwyn. Alf served in WW1 (SERN 781); enlisted at Apollo Bay; member of 4th Light Horse Regiment, 3rd Reinforcement; spent time on Gallipoli and in France and England. Alf is remembered, as Alfred Bignell, in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour as he spent time in the area with the Williams family. He married in England and after the war briefly returned to Apollo Bay before initially settling in Surrey Hills, where he worked for dairyman Canterbury Oliver Towt. He went on to buy the dairy at 6 Parring Road, Balwyn from Charles W Woolfe. He named it Lone Pine Dairy and the family continued to operate it after his death until c2005 when it was sold. Title Australian Corps Memorial Park. Article covers a Memorial cost $1.3 million dollars for dedication on 4th July 1998 consisting of three curved memorial walls for Australian soldiers that died during Wold War 2. The photograph included in the article was taken on August 8, 1918 which shows B company of the 29th Battalion - a Victorian Unit - being addressed by their platoon Commander. All 5 Australian Divisions took part in the major Allied attack on the German Lines - the first time the five Australian Divisions had fought together as the Australian Corps. (Under Australian Command) It is the First memorial on the Western Front dedicated to the Australian Corps. This honour roll was found in poor condition in a district antique shop. It was fully restored by an enthusiastic local lady, It was presented to the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum on 20 April 2022. The Museum is now known as the Bendigo Military Museum. There is a gold rim around the inside of the picture frame. Inside are 15 oval openings, in which are black and white portraits of WW1 soldiers. The writing and captions are in white paint. This is a set of 12 photographs of A Section, 1st Topographic Survey Troop taken from the 25th of May to the 12th of June 1966 during their deployment to Vung Tau, Vietnam. Led by OC CAPT Bob Skitch, the ten personnel from A Section 1st Topo Svy Tp and six personnel from supporting units were the first contingent from the Royal Australian Survey Corps deployed to provide topographic support to the Australian Task Force in Vietnam. They arrived in Saigon, Vietnam on the 10th of June 1966 enroute to the Australian Reinforcement Unit (ARU) “back beach” camp in Vung Tau. The ten RA Svy technical personnel from 1st Topo Svy Tp deployed were: WO2 David Christie, SGT Stan Campbell, SGT Dave King, CPL Jim Roberts, CPL Dennis Duquemin, CPL Des Ceruti, SPR Derek Chambers, SPR Brian Firns, SPR Joe O’Connor and SPR Ron Smith. External personnel deployed were: WO2 Snow Rollston from Northern Command Field Survey Unit, T/CPL Peter Clarke – orderly room corporal, T/CPL Alan Carew – Technical Storeman, SPR Stan Johns – Map Storeman, SPR Boots Campbell – batman/driver and PTE BNF Brunning – cook. The ship featured in photos .1P and .2P was the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney on its 4th voyage to Vietnam. On board were SGT Stan Campbell and SPR Brian Firns, tasked to manage A Section’s stores and equipment. The rest of A Section deployed to Vietnam by air on the chartered Qantas 707B ‘City of Longreach'. A Section’s main tasks were to establish a Theatre Grid, map compilation and map revision; Engineer Survey Support in the camp and to the civil community; give assistance to the Cordon Search Missions by producing large scale plots from aerial photos with every house and fence etc plotted; and then reproduce these by silk screening usually, within a 24-hour period. RA Svy’s support concluded with the withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam in 1972.
