Instrument, Ballarat Junior Technical School Bass Drum, Early 20th Century
The Ballarat Junior Technical School was opened in 1913. Originally situated at the Dana Street Primary School, it was relocated to a custom built school in 1921 in the grounds of the School of Mines Ballarat. The building is now used as the Prospects Restaurant (2012). The drum was one of the BJTS school instruments and seems to have been signed by the many students who played it over period that the school was in operation. This drum appears to be the same one as is shown in a 1913 photograph of the whole school although the skins have been replaced and one of the oldest signatures on the current skins is dated 1939. Photograph, Ballarat Junior Technical School at Dana Street, c1913
In February 1913 the Ballarat Junior Technical School opened its doors to its 86 pupils. The old bluestone building in the grounds of the Dana Street Primary School became their temporary for eight years. In its early years the school offered only a two-year course. The first year was of a general nature giving a thorough grounding in Mathematics and Instrumental Drawing, and introducing students to the various branches of trade work. The second-year students studied for the Junior Technical Certificate and specialized in a course of their choice - either a trade (Woodwork or Fitting and Turning) or a course leading to higher studies at the School of Mines. The photograph shows the students outside the school building. Musical instruments, trophy and shield are shown. When World War 1 began, the school formed a 16 piece Bugle Band. A squad of Junior Cadets led by Mr A Williams and later Mr H Wakeling competed at the South Street contests. Photograph - print, B. Ireland, The Eureka Stockade, c1890 -1900
This image was taken for the purposes of illustrating Jack Harvey's book 'Eureka rediscovered'. This is based on the evidence that the pulleys and brick wall are discernible at the top edge of the image which B. Ireland has not over-painted. Poster, Public Meeting at Ballarat to Fight TAFE Cuts, June 2012
In October 2011 the Ballieu Government announced funding cuts to public and private technical training organisations as a cost saving measure. The government reduced funding for seven subject areas including business and clerical, finance and hospitality, totaling $300 million across the state. During a visit to Ballarat on 15 June 2012 Premier Ted Ballieu was met by hundreds of protestors angry at the TAFE cuts. It was expected that the Ballarat TAFE sector would be cut by $20million (or 40%), and up to 60 TAFE programs would be cut. A report in 'The Australian' on 01 June 2012 projected the TAFE cuts would result in the loss of almost 2000 jobs across the state. 'If the projections are correct, Victorian college redundancies would dwarf those in manufacturing and aviation, matching the worst predictions of job losses across Australia's entire banking sector.' Ballarat's National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council (BTLC) are following up their earlier protest campaigns with a monster meeting to be held at Ballarat Trades Hall, Camp Street on Sunday 8 July. The monster meetings will take place in close proximity to Bakery Hill where over 10,000 diggers protested against an the gold license system in 1854. .1) A brown and black Monster Meeting poster based on the Eureka Monster Meeting poster. The post uses text similar to the 1854 Eureka Poster to advertise a meeting to fight TAFE cuts as announced by the Victorian Government led by Premier Ted Ballieu. .2) A white hand flier with red text calling on the people of Ballarat to attend a meeting at Ballarat Trades Hall to fight TAFE cuts. Poster, Reward Poster for the capture of Frederick Vern, 11/12/1854 (original)
After the storming of the Eureka Stockade on 03 December 1854 a number of reward posters were posted for the capture of rebellion leaders. Frederick Vern was born in Hanover. A reward of 500 pounds was offered for his reward. This was the greatest of all the reward posters (ie a reward of 400 ounds was offered for Lalor and Black). It is not known why Vern was targeted with the high reward value, but it was probably something to do with the fear of the preceived foreigners at the time. The poster gives a description of Vern: "Tall, about 5 feet 10 1/2 inches, long light hair falling heavily on the side of his head, little whisker, a large flat face, eyes light grey or green and very wide asunder. Speaks with a strong foreign accent. A Hanoverian by birth, about 26 years of age."Printed copy of the post Eureka Stockade reward poster for the apprehension of Frederick Vern.
