Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer Born: 10/03/1935 From: East Perth (WA) Height: 191cm Weight: 94kg Natural kicking foot: Left Guernsey number: 5 First senior match: Round 1, 1962 v Carlton at Princes Park Many people believe that he became the Cats’ greatest player in his relatively short six-season career. Arriving to play at Geelong in a blaze of publicity at the age of 27, his participation in the 1962 intra-club practice matches attracted unprecedented spectator interest. Despite suffering a severe knee injury in the opening minutes of his first League match, he immediately demonstrated his wide range of skills. He is regarded as the greatest handpassing exponent in the history of football and was one of the first players to use it as a method of attack. Frequently he achieved distances of 30 to 40 metres with hand passes to team-mates in better position. His ruck work was also quite revolutionary. He developed the technique of leaping for the ball slightly earlier than his opponents and gaining a 'ride' higher into the air. Often he would, in preference to a conventional tap-out, roll the ball down one arm and handpass to a team-mate running past He developed this technique with Bill Goggin in particular. Dewrang Guest House is situated at the corner of The Crescent and the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road at Sassafras. It belonged to the Green family who owned the garage and coach service which operated from the site of the current Sassafras Tavern. Dewrang burned down in 1931. The Argus July 27 1931 FIRE AT SASSAFRAS. Guest House Burnt. SASSAFRAS - Sunday ‘Dewrang’ one of the oldest guest houses in the town was, with its contents, burnt yesterday. The property was owned by Mr J Green, of Kallista, and was occupied by Mr R Gros. Mr Gros and family lost all their belongings. Clovelly Guest House was formerly Braco Park Guest House, owned and run by Eliza and Grace Murdoch. The original Guest House 'Clovelly' , owned by Mrs. Techow, was situated in The Crescent at Sassafras. After it burned down in 1921, Mrs. Techow purchased Braco Park and renamed it Clovelly. The site was purchased by the Education Department c1985 and is now Sherbrooke Community School. Scene looking down Farringdon Road showing Jeeves horse drawn coach going along the CRB road (Mt Dandenong Tourist Road) in 1920. Detailed inscription on the back handwritten by John Lundy-Clarke in 1974.Jeeves Coach on CRB road at foot of Farringdon Road Kalorama (Mt Dandenong North) 1920. Road was formed most of the length from Montrose by contractors Bladin and Dick employing Robert Logan the younger, in 1919 and lay unmetalled till metalled by the contractors in 1922. Mountain ash trees in foreground were on Thomas Hand’s original 23 acre holding. Those beyond coach were on Isaac Jeeves original 160 acre holding Selection Crown Allotment 925(B). This was the area forming part of the inheritance lost by John William Richardson because of the expense of his wife’s illness. Hand enlarged his 23 acres to 305 in 1874. William and his family grew large crops of raspberries on his area, part of which is in the foreground. It had been cleared by his father’s employees before 1877. The section below the Main Road was cultivated by Fred hand, son of William and grandson of Thomas in the twenties before he moved to Redcliffes where he is today (1974). B&W photo shows Cissy Johns and friend on a motorbike at Glen Park Farm, Selby. The photo shows two women in their 20s or 30s, sitting on a motorbike with the registration number 12169. The woman on the right who is most likely Cissie, is sitting astride the bike, holding the handlebars. She is possibly wearing a peaked cap. She has a long knitted jacket over a pale blouse, and a medium coloured skirt which is rucked up by the bike's petrol tank, showing her right leg from the knee down. She has dark stockings and what appear to be medium-heeled, laced shoes with a high shine. The woman on the left is sitting sideways on the pillion seat, with her arms loosely around the first woman's waist. She is wearing a cloche-style hat, a dark knitted v-necked cardigan or jumper, a light-coloured, mid-calf-length skirt, dark stockings and dark shoes with large buckles. B&W photo of a scene in Belgrave, taken Easter 1922 presumably by Miss Field. The view is downhill towards a paddock surrounded by trees. There is a cluster of perhaps half a dozen animals which may be cows or horses They are standing near fencing. There appears to be a building further down the slope and possibly another building to the right of the paddock. On the treed hills in the background another two or so buildings are visible. On the back of the photo 'Belgrave Easter 1922' is written in pen. -

B&W postcard, 'Gembrook Train Leaving Fern Tree Gully'. The postcard has a photo of a level crossing at Ferntree Gully. The down train has just cleared the crossing and a large group have either just crossed the line or are about to. One woman is carrying an umbrella. A horse-drawn carriage is in the process of crossing the track, obscured by a large shrub. There is a warning sign at the crossing saying 'Railway Crossing, Look out for trains'. Behind the train is a hill with scattered trees. The photo has a patterned, printed frame around it. On the back of the postcard is a written message. 'Am sending ad/vanced birthday/ cards to the/ little girls with/ love. Had a letter from Addie last/ week. A.S. Hunt' and in the address panel, 'Mrs W. Upton/ Wyndham/ Werribee.' A postage stamp has been removed from the card, obscuring the date stamp. -

The Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Trained nurses (Sisters) are receiving their morning briefing from Matron D. Tupper before leaving their Headquarters at 39 Victoria Parade, Collingwood to go to their areas (districts) in the Melbourne suburbs to give nursing care to patients in their homes The Sisters averaged 30 calls a day each, mainly wound dressings; personal care, mostly sponges in bed; and injections (insulin and diabetes management). The Trained nurses of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), later known as Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), visited patients in their home and gave best practice care in many fields of nursing, and to people of many cultures, throughout its 130 years of expansion. Initial visits not only assessed the specific nursing situation but the situation as a whole. Their patients ranged in age from babes, children, adults to the elderly and referrals were taken from Hospitals, General Practitioners and allied Health facilities. Some of the care the Sisters provided is as follows: – Post-Natal care given to mother and babe, Wound Care following various types of surgery, accidents, burns, cancer, leg ulcers etc. Supervising and teaching Diabetic Care, including teaching and supervising people with Diabetes to administer their own Insulin, and administering Insulin to those unable to give their own injections. Administering other injections and setting up weekly medication boxes. The Sisters performed Catheterizations on adults suffering from conditions such as Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Guillan-Barre Syndrome, and when required at school on children for e.g. those with Spina Bifida. The Sisters visited those requiring Cystic Fibrosis support and care; those requiring Haemo-Oncology care, including visiting children at school; those requiring Home Enteral Feeding care, and those requiring IV therapy at home and home Dialysis. Palliative Care was given including pain relief with the use of syringe drivers, personal care as needed, and advice and support to both patient and family. The Sisters provided Stoma management to those needing Urostomy, Ileostomy and Colostomy care and those requiring Continence care. HIV/AIDS nursing care was provided; visits to Homeless Persons were made. Personal care was given to patients ranging in age and with varying mobility problems, such as those with MS, MND, Guillan-Barre Syndrome, Quadriplegia, Paraplegia, Acquired Brain Injury, to those following a Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke), those with severe Arthritis and those with a form of Dementia. When necessary the elderly were assisted with personal care and advice given on safety factors with the use of hand rails, bath or shower seats, and hand showers. Rehabilitation with an aim towards independence remained at the forefront of the Sister’s minds and when possible using aids and instruction on safe techniques enabled the person to become fully independent. All care included giving advice and support to the patient and their Carers. The Sisters liaised with the persons Doctor, Hospital and allied Health personal when necessary.This photograph depicts five Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Sisters of varying heights standing in a row. Taking a train from Beech Forest to down to Gellibrand required the train to be controlled at 10 mph (16 km) without running out of air. When a brake application was made the brakes on the locomotive were applied harder than the train brakes. The brakes locked up and the engine would just slide along. Drivers used a retention valve on the loco, then released the loco brakes so as not to wear out the brake shoes. So the train pulled into Gellibrand ready to pull out again after refilling the loco with water.At Gellibrand, a Down goods train is about to depart the station on 14 December 1955. Timetable, Victorian Railways, Amendment to Opening of Extension, Beech Forest to Crowes, 16 June 1911
The circular, S.2628/11, opening the extension of the railway line from Beech Forest to Crowes in June, 1911, is amended by S.2779/11 of 1911. The DOWN train runs from Colac to Beech Forest on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing at 3.00pm and arriving at 6.45pm. The UP train departs Crowes daily at 12.45pm arriving at Beech Forest at 2.15pm, and Colac at 6.26pm, stopping where necessary at Tulloh and Ditchley to pick up or set down passengers.B/W, photograph. Laurie McCabe was in charge of Beech Forest Station until October 1929. When the timber industry went into decline because of poor markets and the crippling effects of the 1929 strike, and when road haulage signalled the beginning of a new transport era it was the beginning of the end. As a result staffing levels were severely cut over the period 1927/29 with the two station masters at Beech Forest and Gellibrand replaced by caretakers in October 1929. The line was then supervised by travelling station masters of whom Laurie McCabe was one of two.B/W. During construction of the railway in 1901 a ballast siding was originally opened 4.5 km south of Barongarook but the ballast proved inferior and a new ballast siding was opened 4 km south of Gellibrand to provide material for track construction. A spur siding, with points facing Beech Forest and a capacity for six trucks, was cut into the side of a slope. Above this was erected a loading bin and chute. This stone was of durable quality so the siding continued in commission after 1902 for periodic track re-ballasting. By the mid-1920s Victoria Railways found it more economic to use ballast from elsewhere so the siding was closed by 1925 and the rails lifted.B/W. In 1955 staff numbers were reduced to an absolute minimum with one track gang at Beech Forest and one at Colac, one of whose members resided at Gellibrand. No new sleepers were issued to the track gangs after 1955/56, cut down ones being used instead. Albert Denning, the son of a Gellibrand selector, worked at Driver's planing mill and Hitt's Lardner mill before joining Victorian Railways in 1928 as an engine cleaner at Beech Forest and Crowes, the last one in both places. He later became a track repairer at Gellibrand and worked with this and the Colac track gang until 1962. Bill Jamieson was a track repairer on the Colac-Gellibrand gang from the 1950s until 1962, and witnessed the official policy of minimum maintenance in the last years of the line.B/W. 201mm x 254mm. Originally known as Loves River it became Kawarren station on 16 June 1902. It consisted of a loop siding and combined office and passenger shelter. Goods loading was sawn timber (brought in on four tramways operating between 1905 and 1939), firewood, charcoal and limestone. In 1920 the limestone company built a store shed and a covered loading area at the terminus to assist operations. The company also requested the siding to be extended by three metres, which Victorian Railways did in the same year. This gave the loop a capacity of 21 trucks. Around 2,000 tonnes per year of limestone traffic kept the station busy until trade ceased in 1957. A postal motor started in October 1938, Kawarren being a point where the postal motor and trains were permitted to cross.B/W. G42 with a Down goods train at Kawarren on 14 December 1955. Lavers Hill General Store, or more usually, Hampshire's Store, was owned initially for two years by Hampshire and Hutley, and then for 17 years by Mr and Mrs P. Hampshire (senior) who serviced the area including during the Depression. On their retirement their son, Percy, went into partnership with Leo Brauer for four years, and then ran it with his wife, Nea, for a further eight years until the store burnt down. The Store was a placed where the community congregated. It was a place where people met or waited for the train or the Cream Bus or the Mail Bus. Inside it was a place where you could buy groceries, fruit and vegetables, footwear, petrol, and so on. It was a place where children could buy a big stick of licorice for a halfpenny or 3d. worth of broken biscuits. Blackwood Gully Tea Rooms now stands in its place. B/W.
