The font was donated by Miss E. Davidson and is in memory of two young apprentices who died on the Galgorm Castle with 9 others crew members, after it was torpedoed by a U-49 on 27 February 1917. Fred Hyde was 16, a former pupil of Bury Grammar School. Nigel Hockly was 17. 7 Sunbury Crescent was the home of Mr and Mrs Albert Tacey, associated with the Tacey family butchers at 629 Canterbury Road from 1888 – 1950s. Lucy Myra (MS Sparkes) was the wife of Albert Arthur Tacey (1902-1959) who worked in the family butchers business from the time he left school at 14 until 1952. They bought their Sunbury Crescent home at the time of their marriage in 1923 and had 3 surviving children – Elaine Merle, Frank Newman and Donald Arthur. Early settlers established market gardens, farms and business in the East Brighton ( East Bentleigh) area of Henry Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton. The small communities established Churches and Schools. Stephen Charman, 1821-1906 a market gardener, donated land for the first Methodist Chapel, Cemetery and School in Charman Rd Cheltenham 1855. Ernest Samuel Shillinglaw married Anna Lucy Barlow in 1924. They resided in Eltham in 1924. By 1925 they were farming in Dalmore, Victoria. Their first child, a son, Leslie Ernest was born in Dalmore, Vic. in 1925. By 1927 they were living at 33 Miles Street, Ivanhoe where their second child, a daughter, Melva Lucy was born in 1927. By 1936 the family was living at Myer's Creek, Healeville close to Mary Ann Shillinglaw who was resident at The Ferns, Healeville. In 1937 they moved to Badger Creek, Healesville where they remained at least till 1954. POSTCARD 1905-1940s Like the carte-de-visite, postcards enjoyed a collecting craze by large numbers of people, and were often kept in albums through which the interested visitor could browse. Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. In 1900 "Morningside" was leased by the Langley family and was now taking in paying guests. Charlemont & Co., operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. The sitter’s identity has been established as a Mrs. Merritt. While we know that she is not the Mrs Merritt who was to be the wife of the future Mayor of Kew, there were two Mrs Merritts who were shopkeepers in High Street, Kew. Mrs Lucy Merritt operated a bootmaker’s shop, and subsequently a “boot warehouse” from 1888 until the 1920s. Miss Laura Merritt established a dressmaker’s shop in High Street in 1910. Her business also lasted until the 1920s, albeit changed to that of a bookseller and stationer. Silver albumen cabinet card by Charlemont & Co., who operated out of the Academy Studio, 114 Elizabeth Street from 1890 to 1898. In this portrait of Mrs Merritt, she is posed gazing directly at the lens, thus achieving a potentially more intimate relationship with the viewer. All that is revealed however in this supposedly more direct pose is her face. As with an earlier generation, her hair is centrally parted and flattened to accommodate her bonnet, which is surmounted by feathers. The detail in her coat-dress is sharply revealed by new photographic processes that allowed firms like Charlemont & Co., to capture greater light and shade, as well as the detail of fabrics. The entire garment is beaded with what is probably Parisian jet. The beading is arranged in a ‘paisley’ design. The paisley pattern was to become ubiquitous in the 19th century as a design on everything from carpets, to shawls, to clothing.Mrs Merrittcharlemont & co., mrs merritt

The waterbody was the site of a quarry that existed between Grovedale Road and James Street, Surrey Hills on land owned by J B Maling (senior). Clay from it was used to make bricks for local houses. The quarry became a hazard and after several drownings was filled in. The Grovedale Park now occupies the site. Muriel Hedwig Lucy Pornitz, also known as Muriel Pornett, lived locally. She was born in Melbourne in 1894 and studied at the South Australian School of Arts & Crafts in 1911 under James Ashton and Fred Britton, and at the Australian School of Etching in Sydney. She was also an illustrator and cartoonist. She died in 1982.A small oil painting on canvas board in a dark wood frame of a water body with a clay bank behind and 2 trees above the bank. This top hat belonged to bank manager Walter Tom Washington (1870-1948). Walter emigrated to Victoria from the Isle of Man at the age of eleven with his family in 1884. His daughter Lucy Frances Morrison (1905-2005) donated his hat to the Society in 1977, while she was living in Brighton. She recalled that he had purchased the hat for a wedding in 1911 and would wear it to church on Sundays. Established in London in 1773 by Miller Christy, Christys' continues to manufacture hats today. William Nichols Anderson (1873-1927) was an Australian painter, one of whose works from the 1906 series River + Rail is in the Kew Historical Society’s art collection (donated 1984). A separate archive file contains correspondence, biographical information (written by his niece), and locations in Kew where he lived. Much of the correspondence between the Society and the City of Kew relates to the painting and its location in the Mayor’s Room at the Kew Civic Offices, Charles Street, where it was on loan from the Society. This belonged to Sue Slonek, who at the time was Secretary of the Surrey Hills Historical Society and an active volunteer working with the collection. She died unexpectedly and this and a book were formally donated to the collection by her son Alex. Wilfred Shipman Bishop was Sue's father. As a young man he grew up at 21 Grovedale Road, Surrey Hills. His father Frederick James Joseph Bishop was a bookbinder. Wilfred enlisted in the AIF in WW2 (V46365). He married Lucy Isobell Legge in 1943. Additionally, it was taken by a local photographer - CHR Christianson - who operated the Sunbury [photographic] Studio. Silver albumen print, mounted on board, of the original Royal Hotel on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets, Sunbury, Victoria.The single-storey, rendered brick building with a corrugated galvanised iron roof includes a number of pieces of information that may assist in dating the photograph. The licensee's name above the door appears to be M.A. Williams. To the left of the door on the external wall is a painted sign: 'BILLIARDS". Another painted sign on the front of the building reads "ROYAL HOTEL [illegible] BILLIARDS." An attached building at right may be the residence of the licensee. Specific architectural features of the building include a corner doorway with a lamp above, three sash windows and a larger square lead-light window to the right of the doorway. The latter identifies the space behind as the "BAR". On the footpath in front of this building is a grill set into the footpath to enable deliveries to a cellar. At least four figures can be identified in the photograph: a woman in the doorway, a man to her right, leaning against the wall, and two other men at the right hand side of the building. This item is part of a larger collection donated to the Kew Historical Society by Anna French. The collection includes personal items from the donor's family, as well as items given to the donor and her mother by a family friend, Lucy Merritt (Jean) Hornby. The item is from that part of the collection inherited or assembled by Jean Hornby. The collection is significant given Jean Hornby's mother's descent from Robert Hornby (1854-1935) and Eva Merritt (1865-1959); her mother the chid of a family who settled in Kew in the 1850s, thus providing a chain of provenance for items dating to the mid-nineteenth century, when her maternal forebears arrived in Melbourne. The Lioness Club of Kew was the first such organisation in Melbourne and its records are consequently of historic significance. The scrapbook has added social and spiritual significance as it provides a key resource for profiling often unknown women in women's community organisations during the 1980s in Kew and Victoria. The scrapbook was deposited with the Kew Historical Society for safekeeping. It is complete and comprehensive allowing for interpretation.A scrapbook, compiled by members of the Lioness Club of Kew containing photographs and typed profiles of members dating from 1982-7. The profiles were added at monthly intervals under a heading "Lioness of the Month". The scrapbook also contains some annual reports and president's reports. At the back of the scrapbook are two newspaper cuttings (The Free Press, March 19, 1980), profiling the new president, Mrs Helen Joyce, and the Club. This is a programme of a concert called ‘Grand Symphonic Concert and Irish Ballad Night’ staged by the Warrnambool Orchestral Society at the Warrnambool Town Hall on July 10th 1902. The conductor was Louis Bayer (1857-1907). Born in Germany, Bayer came to Warrnambool in 1891 and, with his wife, Eleanor, taught piano. violin, orchestration and singing and established the Warrnambool Orchestral Society. In 1896-7 Bayer was the musical director of the Warrnambool Industrial and Art exhibition, composing the Cantata for the opening ceremony and directing over 60 musical performances, including 22 operas and many concerts. Bayer was a composer and wrote several operas, including one called ‘Federation’. Bayer’s wife was an accompaniste at this symphonic concert and two of his sons played the horn and the drums. The soloists at this symphonic concert included Minnie Sloane, Lucy Meares and J. Robertson. This programme is of great significance as it features a concert conducted by Louis Bayer, one of the most important musicians in Warrnambool’s history. This is a yellow-coloured piece of paper folded in two to make four pages. The pages have details of the concert programme, a list of members of the orchestra, one advertisement and a front page with the concert headings in a fancy border. 18 October 1956 Flood level on road at corner of Railway Parade. On the immediate left out of view is Mrs Lucy Egan's home. That house still stands today nestled up against the Wattletree Road Bridge on the other side built in 1959 and is owned by the Bakos family purchased by Mrs Heather Bakos in 1960.. Prior to the Wattletree Road bridge being built, Railway Parade extended up the alignment of present-day Gastons Road to the Eltham-Diamond Creek road which ran past the entrance of the present-day carpark for Edendale Farm. This view is looking west across the Glen Park Bridge, and the beginning of Wattletree Road which sweeps around to the right in the distance. Progress Road does not exist though a road reserve is present on maps.Record of various Shire of Eltham infrastructure works undertaken during the period of 1952-1962 involving bridge and road reconstruction projects, sometimes with Eltham Shire Council Project Reference numbers quoted. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire.
