Letter - Site 2 - Removal deferred, 06.05.1963
... to leave materials in the building on Site 2. The General... in response to Mr Hymans' request to leave materials in the building ...Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This letter is significant because it reflects the relationship between Bob Hymans and the General Superintendent of the SEC based at Kiewa regarding his plans for developments at Falls Creek.A letter from the SEC in response to Mr Hymans' request to leave materials in the building on Site 2. The General Superintendent at Kiewa, Mr H.H. C. Williams was perturbed that the material had not been removed as he felt ample time had been allowed to do so. He stated that the site must be vacated prior to the winter of 1964 and that the Committee would be reluctant to consider Mr. Hymans' desire to build on SIte 4 until this matter had been resolved..falls creek tourist area management committee, bob hymans, falls creek administration -

The first site chosen was "Hospital Hill" between Rowan and Mackenzie Streets and behind the present Lister House School of Nursing. The first building was a primitive affair of slab and weatherboard daubed with clay somewhere near the middle of the present Short St - which at the time extended to the brow of the hill behind the Sacred Heart Cathedral site. The new building was greatly need to serve the hundreds of diggers then active on the field. Messrs Vahland and Gezchmann, Architects, designed a new building of stone and brick, the cenre portion of the hospital to hold 100 beds. This centre portion cost 12,000 pounds and was erected in three months. Patients were transferred from the old site on Hospital Hill to the new building in December 1858.Black and White photo negative of the front of the hospital; Notes on the History of "The Bendigo Gold District Hospital"; letters re classification by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).history, national trust bendigo collection, bendigo, bendigo base hospital, bnedigo hospital, bnedigo gold district hospital -

Due to rising numbers and traffic volume, Vermont Progress Association urged the government to relocate the school buildings to a less prominent site, and new school buildings were erected in Nurlendi Street in the 1950's. The contractor for the building ...This is a set of documents including three sheets of blueprint plans for the New Town Hall and Offices for Warrnambool, created in 1890 by the Architect Mr Arthur H. Cutler of Melbourne. The Contract was signed by the Town Mayor for Warrnambool, Mr William Simpson on May 7th 1890. Also, a Council copy of the Contract dated 26 June 1890, with the signatures and diagram where the two official stamps would be placed. The Foundation Stone was laid the following year by the next Mayor, John Hyland on February 24th 1891. The contractor for the building was granted to W. Kellas (William) of Warrnambool. The Town Hall and Offices were built on the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets in Warrnambool. On March 20th 1983 the new Performing Arts Centre was opened y the Mayor, Councillor R w Andreson, on the same site. The new building incorporates the 1890 Town Hall building. The plans, contracts, documents and various references to people on the documents are significant to the history of the City of Warrnambool and its community. The Warrnambool Town Hall building is also significant for the many community events held there over the decades after it was built. Appreciation for the significance of the almost century-old Town Hall building is demonstrated by its inclusion in the new Performing Arts Centre.Set of five documents that includes Plans for the Warrnambool Town Hall, the Contract cover page and a letter from the Architect to the Council. Close by the landscape seemed so contrived - English fields and hedgerows! The tower and a shed/residence (it had a chimney) were built from local sandstone. Below to the south and east of Melbourne spread 'suburbia'. Close by the landscape seemed so contrived - English fields and hedgerows! Although only about twenty inches deep, the soil of this ancient volcano, its crater lost under subsequent weathering, was rich, deserving the name of "Garden Hill". Now native trees are taking over again. In Kangaroo Ground itself stand the inevitable Store, School and Church - and two Norfolk pines and a monkey puzzle tree."Record of the Society's history and activities and highlighting various aspects of the Heritage Study undertaken by David Bick used to create the future heritage overlay for the Shire of Eltham and later Nillumbik Shire.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 4 stripsKodak Gold 100 5095shire of eltham historical society, activities, heritage tour, kangaroo ground, kangaroo ground tower, war memorials, kangaroo ground memorial -

He manufactured men's clothing on site ...This sports coat was made at a Fletcher Jones factory about the 1970s. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) served in World War One and in the 1920s set up as a travelling hawker selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he leased three shops in Liebig Street, Warrnambool and in 1928 opened his Man's Shop at the intersection of Koroit/Liebig Streets. He manufactured men's clothing on site in a new building erected in 1931. In 1946 a Fletcher Jones shop was opened in Melbourne and in 1948 a factory was established in Warrnambool with a new company Fletcher Jones and Staff established in 1951.This company then operated in other States and known Australia-wide firstly for its production of men's trousers and later for men's and women's clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was closed and the company dissolved. This coat was bought by Lew Officer, a member of a family with pastoral interests in the Western District. This item is of considerable historical interest as an example of the high quality work produced by the Fletcher Jones and Staff Clothing Stores. There are several photos on the AWM site ...Letters regarding three photos of murals in near Tobruk in Libya. The photos were sent to Melbourne Legacy in 1979 by Legatee Syd Wilson of Yamba NSW. He thought Melbourne Legacy might be able to use them to generate money by selling them for advertising or publicity. He said they were enlargements of snapshots he had found in his old army trunk. Legatee Wilson's letter says the murals were: 'painted on three walls of a white concrete Italian block house (Police Check post I think), some 18/20 miles west of Tobruk, between Tobruk and Derna, and near a captured Italian airfield, somewhere about February 1941. Obviously they were painted by a Victorian Sapper. They were very well done, by a competent Sign-writer/artist, in correct and excellent colours (captured Itie paint no doubt - there was plenty in their Naval Stores at Tobruk).' (NB Itie was slang for Italian) From the AWM website the signs were painted by South Australian painter, SZ538 Sapper Leslie John “Doc” Dawes, 2/3rd Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. There are several photos on the AWM site including the building the three murals were on.Photos taken by a Legatee when on active service in Libya in World War 2 and donated to Legacy when it was thought they could be used for fundraising, which shows that Legatees were conscious of that Legacy needs to generate funds to continue its work.Black and white enlargement of a photo taken in Libya of Abbotts Lager mural.tobruk, murals -

Close to the Railway entrance the butcher's shop remains unchanged, but across the road the linear shopping centre tries to keep the character of the olden times. The Fire Bell once hung on a tall gum outside No. 832. Palms in front gardens indicate the age of some of the homes, about 70 years. A corrugated iron shed still stands on the front fence line next to No. 840. Climbing towards Panton Hill the soil was not rich and supported only scarce growth. Perfunctory prospecting and mining had taken place in this area, though not with the diligence applied at Research. Again we saw the ingredients of a settlement, this one organised by Government, the Hotel, the Store, the School. Down from Memorial Park the School grounds had original tree planting and the School Bell dedicated to Maud Rattray who died in 1922. There is a new Hall and opposite in the grounds of the Church and Sunday School a modest Memorial Cross of granite with inscriptions and in memory of four 'fallen comrades'. This small section of the main road retained the small village atmosphere; although the population had increased there had been little alteration."Record of the Society's history and activities and highlighting various aspects of the Heritage Study undertaken by David Bick used to create the future heritage overlay for the Shire of Eltham and later Nillumbik Shire.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 4 stripsKodak Gold 100 5095shire of eltham historical society, activities, heritage tour, st andrews
