Bob Conroy died on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at age 88. The Daylesford trainer and brilliant horseman enjoyed a life dedicated to harness racing, which he shared with his wife Pat and their five children, including Glenn, Anne-Maree and Peter, who themselves have combined to drive more than 800 winners. Renowned as an outstanding trainer of trotters, Conroy spent a life training from Daylesford, having been raised in nearby Korweinguboora before occupying the former Daylesford Trotting Club track, from where he would often venture into neighbouring Hepburn Regional Park to educate his horses. A trots trainer, driver and breeder, Mr Conroy’s training successes include Mary Beverley’s win in the 1973 V. L. Dullard Cup, Lincoln Star's win in the 1978 Bendigo Pacing Cup and 1978 Italian Cup, and the Lightfoot Laurels on four occasions (Lucy Lastic 1997, Miss Universe 1999 and 2001 and False Gem on 2008). His greatest stakes win came when Amazon captured the $30,000 Australasian Trotters Championship final in 1984 and then the same year the E B Cochran Memorial Trotters Cup, while notable triumphs also include Mister Everest in the 1990 Chris E Howe Trotters Cup, two Central Victorian Trotting Championships in 1991 (Omaorio) and 2005 (Sutters Glory), the 1996 Coulter Crown with Lucy Lastic, First Signal's win in the 1999 Cranbourne Trotters Cup and then the R C Freestone Trotters Cup with Miss Universe. Other notable performers he trained throughout his distinguished career included multiple metropolitan winners King’s Pride, Eden’s Return, Magic Madge, Minnesota Fats, Hot And Dry, Kyvalley Duke, Speeding Fine, Baltic Prince and Looks Like Me. Images 9B Bob and Ada Zull house built 1970 Designed and built by Alistair Knox Floor laid by Ada Zull The Alistair Knox Collection The Alistair Knox Collection is a series of mounted enlarged photos of mud brick houses and related subjects. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. As far as we know there has not been a public display of the whole collection which numbers about forty photographs. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Alistair Knox 1912 - 1986 is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. Yields information about the disposition of Geelong trams following closure and those shipped to Ballarat or Bendigo along with dates.Handwritten letter from Bob Lilburn of West Essendon dated 7-2-1971 to Charles Craig forwarding him information of Geelong SEC bogie cars and Scrapped Geelong cars. Notes that his photo of Geelong 40 being loaded at the Geelong depot on 27-3-1956 was received in Ballarat the following day and that Pengelly 23 was the "workhorse" around the depot after closure. List of scrapped cars gives location as known by Bob at the time. The Geelong bogie car list gives the Melbourne number, Geelong number, dated received at Geelong, Transferred to (Ballarat or Bendigo), the number in that City, date received and any remarks. Robert JENYNS (1944 - 16/11/2015) Born Melbourne, Victoria Bob Jenyns' career spanned over four decades. Producing sculptures, prints, drawings, and paintings hee has participated in many of Australia's most significant art exhibitions including the first Biennale of Sydney (1973), the 1973, 1975 and 1978 Mildura Sculpture Triennials, the 1981 Australian Perspecta, the 2nd Australian Sculpture Biennale, and the 1990 Sculpture Triennial. Jenyns was a finalist in the 2006 Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, and in 2007 won the award with his work Pont de l'archeveche. At the age of 16 Jenyns studyied advertising art at the Caulfield Institute of Technology. He then studied fine art with artist/teachers including Ken Scarlett, Kenneth Jack and Fred Cress, and night life drawing classes at the National Gallery schools under John Brack. After graduating the 20 year old Jenyns taught sculpture and carving at Aspendale Technical School (Melbourne). Two years later he moved to Daylesford and where he taught art until 1978, having received teaching qualifications from Hawthorn Teachers College in 1972. From 1979 Jenyns was based in Tasmania, initially lecturing in sculpture at the Tasmanian School of Art and later serving as head of the sculpture department until 2005.
